ELLSWORTH, Maine — A Castine woman is facing criminal charges after she allegedly sexually assaulted a resident at a nursing home where she worked.

Sara N. Comtois, 22, has been charged with two counts of gross sexual assault and one count of intentionally endangering the welfare of a dependent person, according to court documents filed in Ellsworth.

The charges stem from an incident that occurred at Penobscot Nursing Home on March 26, according to a complaint filed in court by Detective Jeffrey Wrigley of the health care crimes unit of the Maine Office of the Attorney General. The assault involved a victim who “was unconscious or otherwise physically incapable of resisting and did not consent” to the sexual contact, the complaint indicates.

Comtois was employed at the nursing home to provide care to the victim who, according to the complaint, is “a dependent person who is unable to perform self-care because of advanced age or physical or mental disease, disorder or defect.”

Comtois appeared in court last week to be arraigned but did not enter a plea to the alleged crimes. She has been free on $2,500 cash bail since being arrested in early April.

As part of her bail conditions, Comtois is not to work in the health care field “in any capacity,” according to court documents. A dispositional conference on her case has been set for June 16.
