SARASOTA, FLA. – Helen E. Honig, 80, died peacefully on the morning of Sept. 16, 2012, among friends and family in Sarasota, Fla., after a brief illness. She was born Jan. 30, 1932, in Bangor, to Joseph Emple and Mollie Cohen Emple.
After attending Bangor schools she graduated from Russell Sage College. Her working career included stints in teaching, fashion and commercial art, but health issues sidelined her into early retirement in her 50s. She lived most of her adult life in New York, but had only recently moved to Sarasota, Fla. She was a lover of beauty, music and the arts, travel, cuisine, laughter and lifelong learning, and will be dearly missed by her friends and family.
She is survived by her brother, Paul Emple of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.; sister, Peg Emple of Boynton Beach, Fla.; and by her sons, David Honig of Berkeley, Calif., and Jeffrey Honig of Northampton, Mass., both of whom were raised by her and her former husband, the late Howard Honig.
A memorial service will be held noon Sunday, Sept. 23, at the Jewish Funeral Chapel, 118 Center St., Bangor. All those wishing to honor Helen’s memory are invited to contribute to one of her favorite charities, such as the New York Times “Neediest Cases” fund, Amnesty International, The Southern Poverty Law Center, and public television and radio stations.
