CARIBOU, Maine — U.S. Sen. Susan Collins married longtime Senate senior staff member and consultant Thomas A. Daffron in a small ceremony attended by about 50 people on Saturday.

The Rev. Dr. Thomas Bentum performed the ceremony at 11 a.m. at Gray Memorial United Methodist Church, the church long attended by Collins’ father, Donald.

The bride wore an off-white, sleeveless, full-length gown festooned with antique lace that observers admired for its class and simplicity, while the groom, escorted by University of Maine athletic director and former Collins chief of staff Steve Abbott, wore a navy blue suit.

“You look beautiful! Oh, yes you do. Have lots of pictures taken,” shouted one onlooker as the newlyweds stood outside the church after the half-hour ceremony and another 45 minutes of wedding portraiture. “Lovely dress!”

“Thank you,” Collins said with a blush.

“I’m so happy to be married in my hometown,” Collins added before the newlyweds headed to the Caribou Inn and Convention Center, where the wedding reception was held. Collins and Daffron are scheduled to leave Saturday for a honeymoon at an undisclosed location.

Though U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton hosted Collins ’ engagement party and all 17 female senators and former Supreme Court justice Sandra Day O’Connor attended the women-only bash, only family and some longtime family friends attended the nuptials, said the Republican senator’s spokesman, Kevin Kelley.

“It was beautiful, simple but meaningful,” Kelley said.

Rumors abounded that Clinton or Sen. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn., would attend the wedding. Several residents marveled at the lack of big names, but Collins never seemed to consider the wedding anything more than a family affair. The 59-year-old Collins told the Bangor Daily News when the couple announced the engagement in February that she was debating holding the ceremony in Bangor, where she lives now, or her hometown.

“What matters the most to me is to have my family there and Tom’s family there,” Collins said in February.

Mainers have made her wedding plans a constant topic of conversation with Collins since she and Daffron announced their wedding plans in February, Kelley said. About two dozen residents waited in The Dollar Store parking lot across the street from the church, some with cameras, during the ceremony.

“I think that Susan has made a good name for herself, and that all of Caribou is proud of her,” said Duska Franklin, a Caribou native who said she babysat the Collins girls when the family lived on Coolidge Avenue and Harvest Road. Susan was about 5 then, Franklin said, and a very cheerful and energetic young girl.

The Collins’ have always been a political family centered around Caribou. Collins’ mother, Patricia, and her husband were both mayors of Caribou. Donald Collins also served in both State Houses for many years. The church is within sight of S.W. Collins Co., a family-owned lumber business.

Franklin gave Collins serious props for her choice of wedding dresses, calling the gown “very sophisticated. She’s a very slender bride. She looked to be about 25 years old. She looked beautiful.”

Collins’ niece and goddaughter, Annie Collins, said she picked up a few pointers for the wedding she hopes to have someday. Annie Collins said she was bowled over by the simplicity and restraint of the selected readings and her aunt’s dress.

“I really liked how it was laced and it was simple and classy,” Collins said. “Not too much.”

Collins said she loved that her aunt selected a Shakespeare sonnet, No. 116, and John: 15:9-12 as her readings. Often referred to as “The Marriage of True Minds,” the sonnet is Shakespeare’s take on the depth and heights of love, while the Book of John reading speaks of the eternal nature of love.

Collins looked forward to a wedding surrounded by family and close friends, Kelley said.

“It means a lot to her to have her wedding in her hometown and to share this day with those whom she loves the most,” Kelley added. “It has also been incredibly challenging for her to plan a wedding while carrying out her day-to-day duties as a United States senator.”

The 73-year-old Daffron is the chief operating officer of Jefferson Consulting Group, a Washington, D.C.-based consulting firm, where he oversees day-to-day operations. Before joining that business, Daffron held several senior management positions in government and the private sector.

Originally from New York City, Daffron has served as chief of staff to former Sens. Bill Cohen of Maine and Fred Thompson of Tennessee. He also served as chief of staff to Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and was the national campaign manager for the presidential campaign of Elizabeth Dole.

He met Collins when both worked for Cohen in the late 1970s, but they didn’t develop a more personal relationship until the last few years, Collins has said.

Collins’ sisters, Kathleen Wiesendanger and Nancy Collins, served as matron of honor and bridesmaid, respectively. They wore blue dresses that were not identical.

The senator carried a bouquet of ivory wedding tea roses and discovery blue iris. Her sisters carried the same bouquet, but smaller — and those colors were echoed in the decor of the church and reception hall.

Collins will keep her maiden name, Kelley said. This is Collins’ first marriage and Daffron’s second. Collins chose the wedding date partly to avoid conflict with senate sessions. Collins, who has never missed a Senate vote, cast her 5,000th consecutive in July.

  1. Once again BDN, this is not news and with all that is going on in this country today, no one cares about Susan Collins life.

    1. There are 330,000,000 of us that call ourselves Americans. 100 of us are US Senators. You don’t think that this is newsworthy?

        1. Don’t you wish you were one of the most powerful woman,or man in Washington. That alone makes it news-worthy.I’ve seen alot more B.S. stories in the paper than this.Get over yourself. And no,I’m not related!

    2. Why should anyone care about a US Senator who happens to be one of the most powerful women in the country? With Olympia Snowe retiring she’ll become all the more important to our state. See what happens when the Navy tries to close Kittery again-Susan Collins will be all over that like Holly on the Pope.

        1. No she actually does her job if we had Chellie Pingree-Sussman or Mumbles Michaud as our senators we would lose even more jobs in Maine.  Because these 2 useless government hacks don’t care about the average Maine Citizen.  All these two care about is collecting a taxpayer funded paycheck , their special interest buddies and their next election.

          1. Studly — this is a wedding, a happy occasion. Could you save your vitriol for some other article?

Here, let’s try comment like this:

Mr. and the Hon., please accept the best wishes of “thebesindaworld” and myself for dozens of happy years together, as fellow Mainers in love.

…See? That wasn’t so difficult. Just turn off the Fox “News” and look inside of yourself for goodness, and then share it. This is the time for doing so.  Plenty of other articles and times to spread your derision, but today we celebrate love and commitment.  That’s all.

        2. Not true, Givrsum.   She does a lot of “behind the scenes” work for her constituents.  What you learn of in the media is only a small part what she does.

      1. Yes, more Senators fighting for pet projects in their home state and adding onto the $15,000,000,000 debt. Awesome!

      2. Actually as much as I adore and respect Senator Collins, I don’t believe the sacred island, with the 6-millon dollar gate and billions of wasted tax payer dollars every year, holds nearly as much importance as the rest of our state. It would be another story if she could relocate the gravy yard to Penobscot Bay where its welfare payroll would benefit more of the state of Maine than that of New Hampshire and Kittery.

    3. If you want to read about only national news go to cnn. Last time I looked this wasn’t a national newspaper?

    4. why don’t you take your toys and go play in your yard since you can’t seem to get along in this yard……

      1. Here I am
        On the road again
        There I am
        Up on the stage
        Here I go
        Playin’ star again
        There I go
        Turn the page

    5.  You are soooo wrong. It is nice to see one of the most powerful women in the US choose to have her wedding in her small hometown in Maine.

    6.  “No one cares about Susan Collins’ life.” Hmmm… 105 comments tells me you’re wrong.

Susan Collins’ wedding is indeed news, whether you like it or not. Big news? No. But it is news. It’s newsy enough to make people who claim it’s not news post comments.

    7. Come on MountainMan! She’s A Maine senator.  And I’m no fan of the BND, but it is Maine’s biggest newspaper.  Susan is a great person, and a lot ofpeople care about her life.

  2. It is good news, and I extend best wishes to Susan and congratulations to her husband, Tom.
Susan looks radiant and happy, and that is great.

    1. And it will only get better. Couldn’t be happier for this couple. They have both given so much to us all. May each day be blessed.

  3. Congratulations to Senator Susan Collins and Mr. Thomas A. Daffron on their marriage.  How nice that they choose her hometown of Caribou for a small wedding with a modest gathering of family and close friends with whom to share their special day.   I wish them much happiness for the rest of their lives.

  4. There are two forgotten Michael Collins. The Command Module pilot of Apollo 11 rarely gets mentioned with Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. Not the same guy right?

    1. He didn’t get to set his feet on the moon either. Outstanding professional that got the job done.

  5. I’m not gifted or brilliant, but I took and taught 9th grade civics….trust me anyone who has Senator in front of their name is important. Seriously- do you know what powers the US Senate holds?

    1. Compared to the powers of an online commenter?  A LOT.  And even this Democrat respects her for the common-sense ways she uses those powers.

    2. How much power does the senate hold??  Apparently not much as the Senate got crap done this year as well as last year……and great you teach high school and I teach at a university so what?  Having a title alone does not make one competent it is what one does- one’s record- and Collins is nothing extraordinary I would actually say she is very ordinary.  An ordinary person who got married like any other ordinary person.

      1. Professor — Any chance we can not politicize this, and just extend our every best wish to a fellow Mainer who has devoted herself to public service and serving us, no matter how on-target or off-base you might think she has been?  Seriously, pal, this ain’t the time to voice evaluations: just send the newlyweds off with a smile and a wave and wish them any goodness you have within you for a married life together of joy, intimacy, and bright moments.  Hm?

      2. Glad you aren’t a “professor of punctuation.” Haha.  Kidding aside, though, Helena is right.
        This isn’t the time.

    3. Yes I am kennely aware of what powers “OUR” Senate holds like voting for the MURDEROUS Iraq “Invasion”. voting for the National Defence Authorization Act, which takes our constitutionally  guarenteed rights of due legal process away from US, [ALL OF US , except for our dictator in chief.]Yes ms. collins you deserve to be happy on your wedding day but welcome to the day after. I have several questions to ask you about like what is “OUR”  homeland security department doing with their order for 450,000,000 million rounds of  Hollow Point Bulletts on top of the billions of rounds of other amunitions??? Sounds like they are getting ready to slaughter each and every one of US many times over,  hu?  I am requesting  the immediatly the cancelation of this order as it is a clear violation of both the Geneva Convention and the Nurnberg Trials. Not to mention that clearly, you can see, being the co-chair of the    homeland security committee of oversight,   that if you make any cuts to unnecessary spending then FIRST ON THE LIST should be to IMMEDIATLY cancel funding of the order for 450,000,000 million + rounds of Hollow-Point Bulletts by   homeland  security.  ASK THEM WHO THEY ARE INTENDED TO BE USED ON ?  US ???   WHAT ARE THEY EXPECTING ???  AN ARMED REBELLION ???   SOMEONE  OUT THERE CAN BRING THIS TO HER IMMEDIATE ATTENTION PLEASE WITH WORD OF HER SOLUTION OF THIS SITUATION.  When Sen Cohen showed his outrage for the $900n dollar hammers and the $500  dollar toilet seats we applauded. Now it’s your turn “senator”    CANCEL THE ORDER FOR THE 450,000,000 MILLION + ROUNDS OF ILLEGAL HOLLOW-POINT BULLETTS THAT HAVE BEEN REQUESTED BY  [OUR] HOMELAND SECURITY DEPARTMENT FOR DOMESTIC USE !!!!!!!     DO YOUR JOB !!!   now!          SIGNED,  Hon. Ralph Coffman  Old Town, Maine

      hollow-Point

  6. I hope that the BDN – a paper for which I have a great deal of respect – does not limit its stories only to things that you care about. This story is about a significant event in the life of a significant citizen of Maine. Believe it or not Maine isn’t only about you and MountainMan. Instead of just looking in the mirror take some time to discover Maine and the people of Maine.

    1. Agreed. Not a fan of her as a Senator, or of congress in general. But the fact remains that she is recognized all over the place for what she does in the Senate.  That makes this newsworthy. This is actually a nice story to have in the paper. It’s can’t all be about the economy, wars, diseases, death, poverty ect.
And I don’t care if I had never heard of her before this story. it’s a nice story anyway.
I love to rant alot about the daily events of the world and how I think things are messed up as much as the next person but there is a limit.

  7. The following day after Michael’s marijuna arrest, it was reported in the Kennebec Journal that Michael was a fugative from justice for years after a 1976 escape from a jail in Canada. He had been serving an 18-month sentence in Canada for possession and intention to sell amphetamines. Collins was released by the Bangor District Court upon payment of a $40,000 bail and I have never heard anything about him since that time.

    1. shhhhhhhh,,, we don’t talk about that.. sweeep sweeeeep,,,, lmao,,, i mean really, how would the snooty feel if that was brought up!!

        1. Very true. It’s amazing how often a person is held accountable, or at least, bothered bothered by the press for, the actions of a relative that they have no control over.

    2. Collins’ gubernatorial campaign was a difficult experience. Many of Maine’s leading Republicans gave her the cold shoulder, and her fundraising lagged behind rivals Angus King (I) and Joseph Brennan (D). Collins also took heavy criticism from conservative groups for her views on social issues. The lowest point in the campaign came when Collins’ brother Michael was arrested in connection with a $1 million marijuana distribution operation on the day she planned to hold a press conference on welfare reform. Collins finished third in the general election, netting merely 23 percent of the vote. “I got clobbered,” Collins said of the race.
      Interesting to say the least.

    3. What’s a “fugative”?  Is that anything like a “fricative”?  If so, I don’t understand what you’re saying, Billy Boi.  What’s a fricative from justice — a phoneme, or something?

  8. Interesting she chose not to get married in a Catholic Church since her bio mentions she’s Roman Catholic.  Congratulations to both, wishing you both happiness for the rest of your lives.

      1.  Catholic Church is pretty liberal, OK to sexually abuse young boys, transfer the transgressing priests to another church where they can abuse more kids. if the heat gets too bad, ship the bad priests to Vatican City.

    1. It’s his second marriage.  If he’s divorced, the Church would prohibit the marriage in one of their churches.

    2.  article says she married in her dad’s church and her new husband was married before so the Catholics may have had a problem with this. Too bad for them, missed a chance for good publicity.

  9.  I wondered why Michael was not mentioned in the article. Maybe the family is no longer close like they once were, but I’m sure someone here knows. Caribou was always a close-knit community back then and a great place to grow up.

    1. Susan said at the time (in the presence of Steve Abbott) that she was shocked and saddened to learn of the charges brought against her brother – and that it was a very difficult time for her entire family. She also said, “This is a matter for the courts, not the political process and that she was confident of the fairness and compassion of the people of Maine.” As it turned out, she was correct about everything. Susan Collins has served the Maine people well in spite of her brothers errors.

      1.  I remember at the time how she was ambushed by someone in public who couldn’t wait to get her personal shocked reaction on camera. I was simply wondering where Michael is now which isn’t what you are addressing.

  10. Congratulations and many years of happiness, friendship and laughter to keep you both happy, healthy and true to yourselves.

  11. Our best goes out to the beautiful couple and may their years be filled with happiness and joy!

  12. I’m not a fan of her politics, but I’m a big fan of people being happy and she looks happy!  Congratulations to both of them.  May their joy grow every year they are together.

    1.  of course she looks happy – she married the CEO of a DC  “Consultant Firm” (that’s code for Lobbyist.)   no concerns about fundraising in Collins future.  hubby will take care of that for her.

      1. Right on! Look at the poverty in the Caribou area, Collins is a disaster as a Senator, She has done nothing for Maine. Her husband has the dumb look, like he does not know what is going on, don’t believe it, he stands now to rise his and her much higher in the 1% group, Maine, hmmm, just a place to get married, their house is in DC.

          1. Hun, Susan Collins is a do nothing Senator, she was in cahoots with Bush to get us in the Iraq War, she should have known better, her action have made a mess of the post office, she is most unqualified to hold that office, she is basically not of a higher enough intelligence, and I am sick and tired of her acting, she has not hornwaggle me, so no, not only no, but %&$& no, so her and the lobbiest will go back to DC and do nothing for Maine. We need industry, help with school funding, we need her to step in and caution Gov Lerage, she does not have the energy or want to pick Maine up, she will help individuals, yes, but her insight is lacking. We should hear speeches or press releases of what Maine needs and what she is going to do. She needs to work for us, not sit around and help and individual once in a while, or make a headline doing nothing like the post office bill. And that is just for openers, I am fed up with do nothings in DC.

  13. This is a human interest story. I may be a human, but I’m just not interested. But I understand why BDN published it. I’d have been shocked if they didn’t.

  14. She looks like a radiant bride, and that dress is perfectly beautiful.  Congratulations and best wishes to the newlyweds!

      1.  “Up there.” Caribou and north is still part of Maine. Take a trip this fall when the leaves are pretty. Might learn something about ‘the other Maine.”

  15. Will her husband be sleeping in the basement still (as reported when they announced their engagement!)  in their home in DC they bought together this year?

  16. There is a time and a place for everything. And this, t4rc, is not the place. Spread joy at a wedding and rejoice in their love.  That’s all.  If you have nothing nice to say on this occasion, please say nothing at all.  It’s a WEDDING for heaven’s sake.

    1. “This” is not a wedding. It’s an article in the Bangor Daily News. Should I send her a letter with my concerns so some intern can send me back a boilerplate letter about how she’s waffled on the issue?

She opted for public life (for only 12 years, but she wasn’t a leader enough to live up to that pledge) so she gets what comes with that. At no time will I be silent in my criticism of her and the others who are intentionally destroying the future of my children.

      1. Well, then, we’re going to get one of the groomsmen to ask you to leave, given that you don’t know how to behave appropriately at a wedding.

BTW, do you also picket at military funerals?

        1. Time for the two of us to hang it up, Helena.  Time4realchange is a tea partier and there is no reasoning with that extremist group.

          1. You got the first part of your statement correct. Nice of you to cast off an entire group of people. Really speaks volumes for you as a person and your ability to deal with reality.

  17. Who voted with Bush and got us in the Iraq mess? Who helped sponsor a bill that the post office has to pre-fund it retirees health fund 75 years ahead in just 10 years, causing a 5.5 billion bill for the post office each september? Who watches the us military buy ammo and plane parts from china? Who should be up here almost treating our plight like an emergency helping Maine People? Who does absolutely nothing for Maine, but knows how to grab a headline? Okay, she got married and bought a house in DC. Some young couple in Bangor, or Calais probably won’t be able to buy a house, probably won’t find any real good job, probably will be in deep financial trouble in a couple of years, who is our Senator who should be up here fighting for Maine People?? You seen her lately in your area???

  18. Collins is not a Princess, she is not Queen of Maine, she is an elected Senator who is supposed to represent Maine People. She has watched Maine People grow poorer, the rich here get richer. I gather, she is burned out, is coasting, I wish she would step down, Maine People still have a chance if we had a Senator who took our plight serious. Collins is a great actress, she gets up there with that squeaky voice, trying to make Mainers feel she is there old lost aunt, then does nothing for Maine, Gawd Help Us.

      1. And, as you’ll no doubt attest, we frown on people taking steps to do what they believe will improve themselves professionally. Great comment, Stocky.

  19. Congratulations to Senator Collins and Thomas Daffron. How wonderful she went back home for her wedding. There’s always something about going home…..especially for a loving celebration. The dress is elegant and they look so happy !

    1. And all this time that you’ve been saying this, has anyone ever understood what you were saying? you’ll pardon my asking.

  20. All her other “friends” must be crushed, finally after all these years she is switching teams?

    1.  I don’t believe there is any truth to your comment. It takes some of us a while to find the right 1.

  21. Did they have the ceremony in “the middle of the road” in Caribou?  Just kidding!  Congrats to a powerful Maine couple.

  22. Is that a foreign car in the picture?? We can just hope for Friday, and gets this off the front pages.

  23. i can’t believe what some are saying on here..come on now, not everything is political and i’m so sick of you making it so. can’t you be happy for anyone, other then yourselves? or can you even do that? congratulations Sen. Collins, all the best. and thank you for not “rubbing it into the faces of mainers” with a lavish expensive wedding. simple is so much better anyway! i hope you have many happy, healthy years together

  24. I could care less about Collins personal life.  Its her republican agenda to get Obama out of office since republican majority  took over the House.  After watching her every no vote on public  TV, she  voted no along with her cohorts in the Senate the last 4 years is disgusting.   Expecially voting no on jobs bills, tax cuts for middleclass,   that would have helped Mainers.  And now,  seniors had better worry and follow her vote if a republican gets president, which she will more then likely go along with making  drastic cuts in Medicare.  Bragging her presence for every vote doesn’t count for much.

  25. Congradulations Susan and Thomas…wishing you much happiness and health in your marriage.  You look WONDERFUL!!!!
