WINTHROP, Mass., and PRESQUE ISLE – Judith Elizabeth (Edgecomb) Akeley, 59, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2007, at her home in Winthrop, Mass. Judy was born Oct. 6, 1948, the daughter of Wilbur “Satch” and Margaret (Cliff) Edgecomb of Presque Isle. Judy was a graduate of Presque Isle High School and earned her nursing degree from Northern Maine Vocational Technical Institute. She worked at The Aroostook Medical Center, as a nurse in the nursery for the first 10 years of her nursing career. In the late 80s, she moved to Winthrop, Mass., continuing her career in the nursing field, this time working in a variety of nursing homes. Judy was a member of Presque Isle Congregational Church. One of her greatest joys was gardening. She enjoyed both vegetable and flower gardening while living in Presque Isle. When she moved to Massachusetts, she brought this hobby with her and amazed her “city” friends with the fact that she could turn a patch of overgrown lawn into a beautiful garden that bore fruits and vegetables. She was always bragging to people that she had grown the cucumbers and tomatoes she brought to work for lunch in “her” garden. Judith is survived by two older brothers and their wives, Fred and Pat Edgecomb of Clinton, N.C., and John and Lyn Edgecomb of Mapleton; and a younger sister, Nancy Edgecomb of Presque Isle. Also surviving Judy are her four children, William R. Akeley and fiancee, Tracy Barnes, of Fort Fairfield, David J. Akeley and fianc?e, Laura Carter, of Fredericksburg, Va., Margo L. and husband, Geoffrey Dyer, of Presque Isle and Rebecca A. and husband, Peter Jurovich Jr. of Winthrop, Mass. Judy had two nephews, Dan and Jake Edgecomb; and a niece, Julie Clark. She will also be sadly missed by her eight grandchildren, Brandon Akeley, Haleigh Dyer, Mirandah Akeley, David G. Akeley, Andrew Dyer, Peter Jurovich III, Amanda Jurovich and Sara Jurovich. To respect Judy’s wishes, there will be no services. A springtime memorial is being planned to bring Judy home to rest in peace.
