SEARSPORT – Adelaide Ethelyn (Clements) Gray, 81, passed away April 3, 2008, at Waldo County Hospital, after a brief illness. She was born Nov. 25, 1926, in Searsport, the eldest daughter of Charles M. Clements and Margaret M. Littlefield. Adelaide attended Swanville Greeley School and later Crosby High School, Belfast. She attended Central Conn-ecticut State College earning her bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Early in her career she worked as a telephone operator and bookkeeper before she became an elementary teacher in New Britain, Conn. She taught reading for many years at Brewer Junior High School before retiring in 1987. Adelaide considered family ties as important and she will be missed by the many members of her family. Adelaide had a wide variety of interests and hobbies, including cake decorating, furniture refinishing, playing contract bridge, doing crossword puzzles, knitting, entertaining numerous summer guests, reading and quilting. She was a member of the CCSC faculty wives and Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development. She followed in her father’s footsteps in being a life-long Red Sox fan and faithfully followed the University of Maine hockey and women’s basketball teams. Adelaide, a member of the Mayflower Society, was also an avid genealogist who spent many hours tracing generations of ancestors. Adelaide is survived by her devoted husband of 61 years, Dr. Ashley Clement Gray; a son, John Gray of Kennebunk; a daughter, Margaret and husband, Paul Klotzle, of Searsport; seven grandchildren, Rebecca and Abigail Klotzle of Searsport, Elizabeth Klotzle of Andover, Mass., Ashley Gray of Falmouth, Nathan Gray of Alston, Mass., Rachel Gray of Cape Porpoise and Kathleen Gray of Kennebunk; four siblings and their spouses, Rita Stone of Searsport, Judith and Charles Packer of Avon, Conn., Stephen Clements Sr. of Swan-ville, Cynthia and Gary Brasslett of Medway; two sisters-in-law, Marta Clements of Woodstock and Jackie Clements of West Enfield; two cousins, Gordon Clements and wife, Lucille, of Prospect and Parker Clements of Searsport; and an extended family of nieces and nephews, who provided many kindnesses. Adelaide was predeceased by her parents; four brothers, Everett, John, Nicholas and Sherman Clements; and one sister, Fannie Brazier. Graveside services will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the care of Crabiel-Riposta Funeral Home, Belfast.
