On the Issues

How do you propose the Legislature closes Maine’s budget gap?

It depends on the budget gap. Remember the gap is caused for the most part by existing laws that require 100% funding. The legislature rarely funds at that level. Also depends on the need. It could be cuts and adjustment to programs.

Do you think same-sex marriage should be legal in Maine?

The voters will decide that issue this fall.

Do you support school choice?

I have not voted to support school choice it removes money from school districts causing more local problems to maintain adequate programs’

Do you think Maine's school consolidation program has been successful?

It has not worked the way it was intended. Maine people do not like to be forced unless there is a good reason.

Do you think Maine should expand MaineCare as proposed by the president under the Affordable Care Act?

We need to have health care for all citizens. Families can not afford up to $18,000 for family coverage. The Affordable Care Act helps to move us in that direction.

What is the biggest thing Maine can do to attract more jobs to the state?

We need to work with the federal government to prevent jobs from going overseas. We need to provide additional opportunities to increase education so that we fill the jobs now available. We need available funds to help citzens start companies. Also need to continue to invest in out natural resources and give jobs to Maine people first.

Do you support lowering the state income tax? What state spending would you cut to make up for the loss of revenue?

We lowered the state income tax this session which is not yet funded. I would rather work to lower property taxes. With the changes Maine’s income tax rate will be in the middle of the pack.

Are Maine's public assistance benefits too generous? How should they be changed?

They are not too generous but need to have more oversight. Inforcement continues to be an issue.

What should the state do to lower energy costs?

Difficult for one state do this alone. But we can work to get cheaper power from James Bay. We need to continue development of ocean and wind power.

The greatest asset we have is our forest and need to continue biomass development. It should be required for every public building where feasible.

Should Maine place more restrictions on abortion?

I have always voted prolife. We need to provide education that help people make sound decisions.
