The state medical examiner’s office is trying to identify human remains discovered this week by a hunter in Byron, according to state police.
The hunter found the skeletal remains about a mile into the woods off Weld Road and called the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said Friday.
McCausland said police have searched several times throughout the year for Derek Adams, 46, who has been missing since Dec. 28, 2016. Police notified Adams’ family about the discovery, but the Medical Examiner likely will use DNA to confirm whether the remains are his.
A team of investigators from state police, the Maine Warden Service, and deputies from Oxford and Franklin counties brought the remains out of the woods Wednesday.
