WATERBORO, Maine — Crews were still on the scene Monday morning of a Sunday barn fire that spread to a house in Waterboro.

Officials say a gas grill likely started the fire.

It happened on Ossipee Hill Road around 6 p.m. Sunday. Crews stayed overnight, making sure the fire was under control.

Investigators say they got a call for a propane tank on a gas grill catching fire on a porch.

Officials say the porch was behind a barn and flames ended up spreading to the barn, then eventually to the home where six children and two adults lived.

Officials say thankfully everyone made it out safely and the family’s pets were saved as well, but two firefighters did have to go to the hospital for heat exhaustion.

Officials will try to pinpoint the exact cause of the fire. They say it doesn’t look suspicious.

Investigators say the home will likely be considered a total loss.
