WESTBROOK, Maine — The body of a missing Portland man was found Saturday morning in the parking lot of a local supermarket, according to local police.

Paul E. Spaltro, 48, was found in a vehicle in the parking lot of the Shaw’s on Main Street around 8 a.m., Detective Sgt. John Desjardins of the Westbrook Police Department indicated in a prepared statement.

“Mr. Spaltro had recently been staying at the Motel 6 on Riverside Street but had been reported missing to Portland police along with his dog on Feb. 23, 2016,” Desjardin wrote in the news release.

The dog, a golden retriever, was found unharmed inside the vehicle and has been returned to Spaltro’s family, he added.

Earlier in the week, Portland police had indicated Spaltro was unemployed and had not been seen since Tuesday, Feb. 23, according to a release from Portland police Lt. James Sweatt. Police knew he had been staying at the motel on Riverside Street and that he likely was driving an older model silver or tan Lincoln LS four-door sedan, but efforts by police and his family to contact him had been unsuccessful.

Officers with the Westbrook and Portland police departments are investigating the death, but it does not appear to be suspicious, Desjardins said. The State Medical Examiner’s Office will perform an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death, he said.
