SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — The U.S. Coast Guard will be cracking down on intoxicated boaters this weekend, according to a statement from the coast guard.

Officers will increase enforcement efforts during their Operation Dry Water campaign from June 26 to 28, focusing on boaters operating under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

The campaign’s goal is to reduce the number of deaths and accidents on Maine’s waters due to impaired boaters and to raise awareness of the dangers of boating under the influence.

The Maine Marine Patrol, Maine Warden Service and the Falmouth Police Department are also participating in the effort.

It is illegal to operate a recreational vessel in Maine with a blood alcohol level of .08 percent or higher.
