Israel not a victim

This is to celebrate the BDN’s decision to publish “Reflections on our day In Gaza” by Maurine and Bob Tobin (BDN, Dec. 20). As a new friend of mine in Jordan wrote to me after reading it, “It is good to know that there are still in this world some courageous people who care to step forward and tell the truth as it is without being afraid of the possible stigma that (it) might bring onto them.”

He also speaks for many of us in America when he points out that, “The story of Israel being a victim to Palestinian attacks cannot and will not stick forever. The security of Israel will never be realized by building walls, or bringing in more tanks, to build one of the largest armies in the world, to protect its citizens. Its security will come by being a good neighbor, and allowing its neighbors to live in peace, and by giving them back some of their rights for proper existence.”

Sony solution

A solution to the Sony threat might be for all the major TV networks to agree to air “The Interview” during prime time on the same evening, so the vast majority of TV viewers could see it. That should show the hackers that their idea can backfire.

‘Spirit of Eastport’

As an outsider who frequently visits Eastport, I am constantly amazed by the cultural offerings and artistic activities available in Eastport, ranging from plays and musical performances to film showings and art galleries. The array of cultural offerings is far more than one might expect from a city of this size. Even more astonishingly, Eastport has these magnificent assets not because of money and other resources, but rather, because of the hard work, volunteerism and creativity of its own citizens and those of nearby areas.

The “spirit of Eastport” is a spirit that other communities inside and outside of the state of Maine would be well advised to imitate. Eastporters deserve all of the assistance they can get,and these cultural grants enable Eastport to share more and more with the rest of the state and the rest of the world. This spirit is one of Eastport’s greatest assets, and one of its finest exports.
