WISCASSET, Maine — A fire Thursday morning destroyed a woodworking and paint shop in a three-bay garage at Two Bridge Regional Jail, but the garage remains standing.
Firefighters responded just before 6 a.m. to the jail and found heavy fire in the south end of the garage, which is approximately 100 yards from the jail, Wiscasset Fire Chief T.J. Merry said.
The fire was well-contained in the single bay, where inmates do woodworking and painting. The other two bays sustained smoke damage, but the building is still standing, Merry said. He declined to offer an estimate of the damage, but said woodworking equipment in the bay was damaged.
The blaze was under control in about 15 minutes.
Investigators from the state fire marshal’s office were called to help determine the cause of the fire. No inmates were in the garage when the fire broke out, according to Merry.
No injuries were reported. Crews from Bath, Woolwich, Westport Island and Alna assisted at the scene.
The jail houses prisoners from Sagadahoc and Lincoln counties.
