PORTLAND, Maine — Cumberland County Jail officials continue to investigate how an inmate was able to leave her cell on Saturday afternoon, get through locks and a glass door and enter the cell of another inmate to have sex.

According to WCSH 6, Cumberland County Sheriff Kevin Joyce said Saturday that the two arranged the encounter by communicating through an air duct.

The woman reportedly left a note on her door Saturday telling staff she didn’t feel well and didn’t want to take her afternoon medication. She also stuffed pillows and blankets in her bed to make it appear she was sleeping, WCSH reports.

She then reportedly snuck into the man’s cell, where the two stayed for three hours until officials discovered them.

The names of those involved will be released Monday.
