SCARBOROUGH, Maine — One person was killed on Tuesday morning in a single-vehicle accident on Route 77, according to police.

The driver, a 72-year-old South Portland resident, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Scarborough police Officer Andrew Flynn.

Flynn did not disclose the driver’s identity, pending notification of family members.

The accident occurred shortly after 7 a.m. on Spurwink Road near Ocean Avenue, according to Flynn.

The vehicle, a 2005 Subaru Legacy, apparently left the road and hit a tree, causing the vehicle to catch fire. Flynn said a passing motorists extinguished the fire just as police began arriving on scene.

The accident does not appear to be suspicious and speed does not appear to be a factor, Flynn said.
