HANCOCK, Maine — Two people are dead after an accident on Route 1 in Hancock County late Monday night, police said.
Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said a northbound 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer had attempted to pass another vehicle when it struck a parked pickup truck and rolled over around 11 p.m.
McCausland said the Trailblazer had pulled out of Tideway Market in Hancock and headed north just prior to the accident. After attempting to pass the other vehicle, the Trailblazer went off the road, struck a parked pickup and rolled over.
McCausland said the parked pickup had no occupants.
There were four occupants in the Trailblazer, one of whom was pronounced dead at the scene, the spokesman said. The other three were transported to Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth.
Two were treated and released from the facility while a third occupant, who was the driver, died at the hospital, McCausland said.
The names of the victims were not released.
Hancock County Ambulance, the Hancock Fire Department and the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department assisted state police at the scene, McCausland said.
Route 1 was closed in both directions for an hour and a half while crews cleaned the scene up.
