BRUNSWICK — Police say the elderly driver of a car that hit a business on Mason Street Monday afternoon accidentally stepped on the gas instead of the brake pedal while attempting to park.

Brunswick police Sgt. Russ Wrede said Carol Frucht, 85, of Topsham, was driving her husband David Frucht, 90, to Midcoast Eye Associates at 8 Mason St. As she was pulling into a parking space in a 2005 Subaru station wagon, Wrede said Frucht stepped on the gas pedal instead of the brake pedal, launching the car into the side of the building. The car hit a bicycle chained to the side of the building and would have driven into the building if it hadn’t hit a load-bearing wall stopping it, Wrede said. Police were called to the scene at 2:31 p.m.

David Frucht sustained a cut on his arm but no one else was hurt as a result of the crash. Wrede said the outside of the building was damaged as was the inside, where a wall was cracked from floor to ceiling.

No charges were filed.
