PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The Presque Isle Fire Department spent the morning Tuesday battling a blaze at a home just across the street from the University of Maine at Presque Isle.

Presque Isle Fire Capt. Vince Baldwin said Tuesday that the fire broke out just after 7 a.m. at the 84 University St. home of Michael Beaulieu, 73, although firefighters are not yet sure how it started.

That building quickly became fully engulfed with flames spreading to a nearby home as well. Firefighters were able to save the second home before it suffered too much damage, according to Baldwin. A third house also saw some heat damage to its siding, he said.

Beaulieu’s home was a total loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation. The department received mutual aid from firefighters with the Mapleton Fire Department and the Caribou Fire Department.

There were no injuries, but a cat perished in the fire.
