KahBang Festival announces 2013 artists and films

BANGOR — KahBang Film will be re-launched this year by the KahBang Festival’s nonprofit sister organization, KahBang Arts. It will feature dozens of free film screenings, juried awards for competitive screening categories, a midnight film showcase, and new this year, a VHS Screening Night.

Highlights from this year’s official selections include “The Dirties,” a feature film in the Gen-Next Competition that highlights first-time and emerging filmmakers. Budding auteur Matthew Johnson, discovered at the Slamdance Film Festival, delves into the dark world of high school bullying in this chilling indie drama.

“The River,” a short film included in the selections, stars Lauren Ambrose from HBO’s “Six Feet Under.” The short, directed by Ambrose’s husband, Sam Handel, had its premiere earlier this year at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City.

An exciting inclusion in this year’s selections is “Black Rock,” a feature film co-written and directed by Maine native Katie Aselton, who also stars in the popular FX Comedy Series, “The League.”

A darker departure from her comedic work, “Black Rock” (also starring Kate Bosworth and Lake Bell) is a crafty thriller that plays out like an updated homage to “Deliverance,” following three friends on a weekend camping trip to a remote coastal island.

The KahBang Film Festival is a discovery festival for independent cinema, dedicated to showcasing emerging films and filmmakers and exposing them to new audiences. The festival is a program of the non-profit organization KahBang Arts and is part of the KahBang Festival brand.
