Owls Head garage destroyed by fire

OWLS HEAD, Maine — A swift-moving fire destroyed a landmark Owls Head business Sunday afternoon.

Frankie’s Garage was leveled despite the efforts of firefighters from Owls Head and South Thomaston.

Owls Head Fire Chief Frank Ross said the fire started on the end of the building that had a waste oil heater and the fire was out of control within 10 minutes of him arriving at the scene. The cause of the fire had not yet been established, he said.

There were several explosions during the fire, and thick black smoke could be seen from miles away.

The garage was recently bought by Cecil Fogg of Owls Head, Ross said.

Frankie’s Garage is located at 50 Weskeag Road, also known as Route 73, about two miles south of the Rockland town line. The property is assessed by the town at $75,000.

Ross said getting water was a challenge. Pumper trucks were hooking up to hydrants at the Rockland line next to the Midcoast School of Technology.

Traffic was being rerouted from the fire that discovered at about 4 p.m. The chief said there had been no injuries as of 5:30 p.m.
