FREEDOM, N.H. — A Carroll County sheriff’s deputy shot himself in the leg Monday night while at the scene of a shooting on Huckins Road, state police said.

The deputy “suffered an injury to his lower leg and foot when his weapon unintentionally discharged at the scene,” police said in a release. The deputy was taken to Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro and is expected to make a full recovery, the release said.

The deputy, along with officers from state police and the Madison and Ossipee police departments, were investigating a shooting in which a man suffered a gunshot wound to his leg about 8:10 p.m. Monday. That man was taken to Memorial Hospital in North Conway, where he was treated for his injury and released, police said.

Joseph Wright, 38, of Parsonsfield, Maine, was charged with falsifying physical evidence, hindering apprehension and resisting arrest. Police said Wright “had been present during the alleged shooting.”

State police and the Carroll County Sheriff’s Department refused Tuesday to provide the deputy’s name or any other information, including the name of the other man who was shot, beyond what was detailed in a press release.

Police are searching for a white man and white woman they said were at the scene of the shooting. Anyone with information is asked to call state police at 223-8838.

  1. I was pretty embarrassed when I cut a 40 foot tree down and it landed on my Tundra. When asked by my wife why I hadn’t moved it away from the area I replied-“I did.” We all have one of these moments sooner or later.

    1. Just not far enough right. lol.
Anyway this copper will have some stories to tell in the future for the grand kids. The night he chased three desperado’s down the back roads of Maine.

  2. “The deputy “suffered an injury to his lower leg and foot when his weapon unintentionally discharged at the scene,” police said in a release.”
Another gun attacks a human being! What was on this gun’s mind? Why did this gun shoot it’s master in his leg?
I suspect this deputy was cruel to his gun and the poor thing lashed out.

  3. I love this story……..and to think that some dingbats think teachers should have guns in school……And trained deputies end up shooting their own selves…..I would be scared to death to go to a school where teachers had guns…..Teachers have bad days too and they are NOT all like Mr. Chips

    1. yes, teachers should have guns in schools.

Instead of waiting for other people with guns which might be minutes away, the teachers could respond to a threat immediately and save lives.

“.I would be scared to death to go to a school where teachers had guns”

I on the other hand would feel safer, knowing that if something terrible happened, i wouldn’t have to wait, cowering in a corner or running for my life.

      “.Teachers have bad days too”

the worst possible day i could imagine in the life of a teacher would be if something happened and the teacher was not able to protect the students from harm.

      1. Those of you who don’t subscribe to the print BDN missed today’s article (apparently not online), “Teachers Say Guns are not Part of Their Jobs” (BDN 12/26/12, p. B6), from the Keene Sentinal.

    2. Funny how none of my guns have ever ” unintentionally discharged”. Must be defective, or maybe I’m just not careless and negligent like this cop.

  4. “So when you shot yourself in the leg…were you holding the gun like this and then your finger*BANG*AAAAAAAAGGGHHHHH”

“Yes sir, it was JUST like that!”

  5. It doesn’t say if it was a Glock. My former police chief stood up one day and his gun went off, shooting him in the calf. Turns out some Glocks had “issues.” Nevertheless, it’s got to be highly embarrassing for the poor deputy. I imagine he will NEVER live it down at the station.

    1. the only issues glocks have is someone putting their finger in the trigger guard when they don’t intend to shoot.

    2. glocks have a an internal “firing pin block” safety that can only be disengaged when the trigger is pulled.
it is also striker fired, which means that it absolutely cannot fire unless the trigger is pulled all the way back.
there is no way it could have gone off without the trigger being pulled.

  6. were any other legs injured in this assault? Did that leg have a victims permit? Those POW’s (Police Offensive Weapon) are dangerous and can sometimes turn on their owner just like some dogs I’ve heard about.

  7. This is all Andy’s fault. He will not take the blame officially, but we all know it is his fault. It happens every time he gives Barney a bullet. I can’t imagine with all the holes Barney has in his foot that Andy has managed to hang on as sheriff. Talk about the thin blue line.

  8. Oh, not another case of, “IT JUST WENT OFF”. Seriously, how do these guys make it through police training?

  9. To those who morphed this discussion into another “arm the teachers” crusade, have you calculated how many million student/teacher classroom hours have been put in quite safely. This is not to detract from the horrible tragedies, deaths, and inflicted pain in CT, CO, VA, and elsewhere, but observe that students (and teachers) are safer in the classroom than they are out of it.
