NEWTOWN, Conn. — His hair is unchanging through the years: a little boy’s simple bowl cut. His eyebrows do not arch or smile. His lips are neither pursed nor puckered but always flat, giving nothing away. His eyes, year after year, pop out from the snapshots, open wide, connecting with no one.

This is what Adam Lanza’s pursuers are left with. In violent death as in isolated life, he gave away little. The 20-year-old who on a bright Friday morning killed 26 people at the elementary school he had attended, as well as his mother and himself, destroyed one promising key to his unspoken passions, hammering his computer’s hard drive into digital silence. He left no note, confided in no friend. His mother, the one person he was known to have spoken to in anything more than monosyllabic responses, he shot in the head, four times, while she was in bed, in her pajamas.

Like Jared Loughner in Arizona and James Holmes in Colorado, Lanza stares out at us, bug-eyed and disconnected, in the grainy snapshot that is our first window into his soul. Mass shooters, almost always loners, often look the part, meaning that the publicly available images of them portray them in no social context, looking but not seeing, seen but not known.

In the desperate search for motive where madness has prevailed, the Lanza case is more frustrating than most. For a young man who spent most of his waking hours at a computer, he appears to have left behind an astonishingly small electronic footprint — no Facebook page, no Twitter account.

The Connecticut State Police, assisted by the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, has poured everything it has into the Newtown shootings investigation, but “we don’t have any smoking gun to say this is why it occurred, at least not yet,” said Lt. Paul Vance, a department spokesman. “We are looking at several months before we really have our arms wrapped around this.”

Investigators have learned through interviews with his mother’s friends that Lanza spent his days in the windowless basement of the family’s $600,000, 3,100-square-foot house, sitting in front of a screen, anonymously playing violent video games with people he did not know. Lanza’s devotion to the games, rather than to the people playing them, was so single-minded that, across dozens of online gaming sites, his disappearance after thousands of hours of play has left no ripples, no community of people asking what happened to their former competitor.

From the narrow view of the outside world, Adam slipped through the years like sand through an hourglass. He went to a local hair salon occasionally, but always in the company of his mother, who answered the hairdresser’s questions for him. He moved from school to school, leaving so little impression that classmates can’t recall which years he was with them. His mother had friends who adored her and saw her frequently, yet they had never been to her house, never met the son she spoke of so warmly.

But inside 36 Yogananda St., Nancy Lanza had grown progressively more worried and frustrated as her younger son withdrew ever more completely from the world, her friends said. She devoted more than a decade to trying to reach him, start him off, cater to his needs, pull him out of himself. By the end, she had realized she wasn’t getting anywhere.

Decades later, elementary school teachers tend to remember their students frozen in time, each child a collection of moments, sweet and savory. From Adam Lanza’s time in second grade, Carole MacInnes remembers an intelligence almost lost in silence.

“He was a little boy in my class in second grade” at Sandy Hook Elementary, said MacInnes, who taught in Newtown for 22 years before retiring three years ago. “A thin little fellow. He was very quiet. There was a quiet depth to him that I couldn’t penetrate.”

The distance was unusual for a second-grader, but Adam was not yet debilitated by his withdrawal. “He didn’t need that much from me,” MacInnes said. “Some kids coming in from first grade need more attention, but academically he was fine. Socially, he got along with the others. I don’t remember him as hostile.”

Nancy Lanza visited MacInnes at parent-teacher conferences and the sessions were unremarkable; mother had no special concerns.

But Lanza’s concern about her son was already evident, said Wendy Wipprecht, whose son, Miles Aldrich, was invited, along with the rest of their first-grade class, to Adam’s birthday party — duckpin bowling at Danbury Duckpin Lanes. Miles and his mother were happy to be invited, in part because Miles, who had autisim diagnosed and had a teaching aide devoted to him, was not always included in class social events.

At the party, Nancy Lanza approached Wipprecht, evidently worried about her own son.

“I got into a long talk with his mother,” Wipprecht said. “She was concerned about Adam. He was obviously very bright and very shy. She was worried he wasn’t doing as well as he should be.”

Wipprecht was surprised by the level of Nancy’s concern. “I didn’t see autism there,” she said.

Several years later, when the boys entered middle school, Lanza took her son out of the public system and put him into St. Rose of Lima Catholic School because “she thought he would do better in smaller classes,” Wipprecht said.

The two women did not stay in touch after the boys finished elementary school. Their boys did not see each other again until 10th grade at Newtown High School, where Miles remembers Adam being “very, very quiet,” Wipprecht said.

Somewhere along the way, Adam was given a diagnosis of Asperger’s syndrome, a developmental disorder related to autism that usually involves impaired social skills, difficulty communicating, and repetitive and fixated behavior. Wayne Carver, Connecticut’s chief medical examiner, said his office is consulting with geneticists in a search for “any identifiable disease associated with” Adam, noting that “Asperger’s is not associated with behavior patterns that are violent.”

At St. Rose — although the Lanzas were Catholic, they were not religious and did not belong to the church, friends and relatives said — Adam “wasn’t interested in what normal, average 13-year-olds were interested in,” said Nicholas Martinez, a classmate who is now a student at Seattle University. “He didn’t like contemporary music” but rather listened to classic rock from the 1950s.

Students who knew Adam at St. Rose school said he was distant but not entirely unreachable. “He wasn’t an outcast, but he didn’t fit in either,” Martinez said.

“You would say ‘hi,’ and he would say ‘hi’ back, but he didn’t give you a lot to work with,” said Kate Leen, now a student at Hofstra University.

In ninth grade, Adam returned to public school, but his difficulty relating to people was obvious even to those who had only casual contact with him. Newtown High, one of the largest schools in Connecticut with 1,750 students, reflects the town’s affluence — the median family income is $104,000 — with 87 percent of students planning to attend college and test scores well above the state average.

A high school classmate who was on the honor roll with Adam in 10th grade saw his photo after the shootings and didn’t recognize the young man. Then she saw an older picture, from Newtown High’s Tech Club, which is where she came to know Adam.

“I knew exactly who it was,” she said.

Lanza was the only kid at Newtown High who dressed as he did — Dockers, polo shirts, something like “business casual,” said the classmate, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. Adam’s shirt was often untucked. His clothes never quite fit, hanging off him, “loose. They were nice clothes but ill-fitting. It made for a funny picture. It would look strange.”

Adam carried a briefcase every day. No one else in the school did.

Newtown High was a cold place for a kid like Adam, according to his peers and their parents. He was alone and apart from the school’s intricate social circles and the swirl of teenager politics.

The classmate said she, too, was nerdy and had a tough time with the popular kids. “No one went out of their way to include me,” she said. “Anyone who was different didn’t fit in. If you let it get to you, it would destroy you.”

She would see Adam in the cafeteria, sitting near her small group of friends, invariably surrounded by people but never saying a word to any of them.

“This is a person you would have had to watch and care for and protect him from the other students,” said Richard Novia, who was security director for the Newtown schools for 16 years. “This is a boy who always had a buttoned shirt right to the top button.”

Adam was not only “a quiet shy child, small in stature . . . and challenged to make friends,” but also regularly had episodes in which “he’d just shut down and pull within himself,” Novia told the Associated Press. “He would avoid verbal or physical contact with just about anyone if he could. Getting him back out of that would be challenging.”

On such occasions, the school would contact his mother, whom Novia saw as “an excellent parent,” and she could coax her son out of his shell.

Novia also knew Adam through the high school’s tech club, which brought together teens who played computer games and wrote programming code.

Club members said they would gather at one another’s houses to link their laptops and play together at LAN parties, named for the local area network that connected their computers. According to club members, Adam played Star Craft and “War Craft 3: Reign of Chaos,” in which, as the manufacturer puts it, a dark “shadow has fallen over the world, threatening to extinguish all life — all hope.”

Adam once hosted a LAN party, according to Gloria Milas, whose son Joshua sometimes played computer games with Adam.

In class, Adam did his work and said little or nothing. He left Newtown High during 10th grade, never to return, peers said. Adam finished high school through self-study at home, graduating in 2009. That year, at age 16, he began taking college courses at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury.

Adam took six classes at the college in 2008 and 2009, in history, computer science and German. His grades were good — A’s and B’s for a 3.26 average — but he made little impression on his professors and left campus without having grown close to anyone there.

Adam left school around the time his parents finalized their divorce. His father, Peter Lanza, a vice president of taxes at GE Energy Financial Services, had moved out of the Newtown house in 2001; in 2009, the parents each completed the state-required mediation and parenting classes.

An acquaintance who spent time in the Lanzas’ house around the time of the divorce described the breakup as friendly and respectful, without visible rancor.

“They always stayed civil,” said Marsha Lanza, who is married to Peter Lanza’s brother Michael. “They always stayed friends.”

Nancy, who had worked as a stockbroker in Boston before she had children, got the house and alimony that started at $240,000 a year and rose over six years to about $300,000 — well more than half of Peter’s gross salary. The couple agreed that Adam would live with his mother, who would have final say on decisions regarding his education and care, just as she had during the Lanzas’ years of separation.

The father, who saw Adam regularly on weekends during the years of separation, remarried in 2010, to a librarian at the University of Connecticut. Friends and relatives said Adam cut off contact with his father and his brother, Ryan, around that time.

Adam hadn’t spoken to his father or older brother in at least two years, according to the source who has been in touch with the Lanza family last week.

Alone with each other in a big house with a pool on two acres, mother and son struggled over issues of independence, friends said. In 2010, Adam got a driver’s license but did not go out by himself often.

Nancy remained dedicated to Adam, catering to his heightened sensitivities.

“I believe she thought she had it under control,” Marsha Lanza said. “I believe if the kid needed help, she would have gotten it, because that’s who she was. They had the money. She had time because she was a stay-at-home mom. She wasn’t afraid to be there for her kids. She was involved. That’s why when I heard that he shot her, that floored me. Your mom did all this stuff for you; what the hell were you thinking? Why did you take your revenge out on her? What did she do? So there’s something I don’t know or I’m missing.”

Adam would sometimes “isolate himself,” Nancy’s friend Ellen Adriani told NBC News. “One time he was ill, and he just didn’t want her in the room. So she stayed outside all night on the carpet of his bedroom. He periodically would say, ‘Are you there? Are you there?’ And she’d always say, ‘Yes I’m here.’ So he wanted her there to some degree, but not in his exact, immediate space.”

Adam — 5-foot-10 and thin, with blue eyes, according to his driver’s license — had become a vegan and insisted on eating organic food. Family friends said he was politically conservative, although he was the one member of his immediate family not registered to vote. He developed impressive speed and moves on the arcade game “Dance Dance Revolution,” which he would play at a local game store, sometimes drawing a clot of onlookers. But if a stranger tried to join him in what is usually a two-person game, Adam would walk away from the machine and out of the store.

In the past couple of years, Nancy searched for ways to get Adam out of the house, away from the vast collection of violent video games he kept in one of his two bedrooms. One of those rooms was in the basement, not far from the lockbox where Nancy kept her firearms — at least five of them, all purchased legally, all obtained after her divorce.

An acquaintance who spent time in the Lanza house in earlier years said he had seen no sign of guns or interest in weaponry at that point.

The weapons were for “self-defense,” said Marsha Lanza. “She lived alone. She was a female, lived alone.”

Nancy, who grew up on a farm in New Hampshire in a family that owned guns, believed that teaching Adam how to shoot would give him “a sense of responsibility,” her friend Russell Hanoman said on NBC News. “Guns require a lot of respect, and she really tried to instill that responsibility within him, and he took to it. He loved being careful with them.”

Mother and son went shooting together at local ranges on multiple occasions, law enforcement officials said.

Adriani told the Connecticut Post that in the past couple of years, Adam had been eager to join the Marines or at least some branch of the military, but Nancy Lanza, despite initial enthusiasm for the idea, concluded that her son could not thrive in the service. After all, he could not stand to be touched and had trouble speaking to others.

More recently, Nancy had told friends this fall that she was considering moving Adam to Washington state to enroll him in a school that she believed could help him.

Adam was 20 now, and Nancy told friends she was eager to find ways for him to get out of the house. She had taken some trips without him, leaving his meals prepared for him. She was on one of those trips, by herself, for the three days before the shootings, staying at the Mount Washington Resort and Hotel in Bretton Woods, N.H., according to local news reports.

Law enforcement sources said Adam was dressed in black clothes covered with body armor when he burst into Sandy Hook Elementary School on Dec. 14. He had his mother’s Bushmaster rifle and her Glock and Sig Sauer handguns.

In a matter of minutes, he killed 20 children in the school he once attended. He killed six adults who cared for those children in the same rooms where Carole MaInnes and other teachers sought to connect with him. He had already killed the only person who could draw him out of his hard shell. And then he took his mother’s handgun, pointed it at his face and blew himself out of this world.

Crites and Jennifer Jenkins in Washington; and Kari Lydersen and Peter Slevin in Crystal Lake, Ill., contributed to this report.

  1. Man, from that photo above he’s got it written all over ’em. Yeah, this dude was out there, loon city !
And to read reports of how his mother would sleep outside his bedroom door when he was sick, leaves very little doubt as well that she had some issues herself, and quite possibly responsible for his issues, and not through birth.

Those of you against arming the schools, take a good look at that photo, try stopping that with words of wisdom. Where talking ‘mad intent’ and you ain’t stopping that short of using deadly force.

And this country is loaded with Adam Lanza’s. In fact I would venture to say that 1 out of 5 kids under 25 years of age in America have personality disorders, social disorders and outright mental illness of some sort. Although those with diagnose mental illness are more likely to be victims of crime from miss understanding about certain mental illnesses then those who commit crimes.

I don’t believe he had what I would consider the traditional mental illness’s, his actions and what knowledge we do have of his life style paints a self induce psychosis.

Those of you who don’t own a firearm, get educated, get trained and get armed. This is the real Zombie Apocalypse. Look at that photo again, the dude is the walking dead..

    1. How about we just make it so that a shooter can’t have 20, 30, or 100 round drum magazines. If this nut had to stop and reload others would have had time to stop him. He does not look like he the physical type. Kind of like most of the Republicans, I know all hat no cattle.

        1. Yep, they usually have to get their little self righteous dig in. It makes them feel like they have their big boy pants on.

      1. 2 or 3 round magazines should do it. Anything more means that the shooter is not skilled enough to be using the weapon.

      2. So the death of 5 or 6 kids is acceptable? Who among an unarmed faculty in a grade school would stop him regardless of how small he is? I’m surprised at the outcry against high cap magazines, as if death from a standard cap magazine is acceptable.

      3. Spoken like a true spectator. I have attempted to corral twelve-year-old children who weigh 90 pounds soaking wet. It is some ole difficult when they are in a full blown psychotic rage. Try it some time.

        1. The difference is you’re trying to control them without hurting them. if you are trying to disarm a murderer you are not worried about harming them and controlling them becomes much more easy.

    2. Your comments make gun owners look ignorant, You are only giving them ammo and reason to pursue a total ban. Please shut up.

  2. “Lanza spent his days in the windowless basement of the family’s $600,000, 3,100-square-foot house, sitting in front of a screen, anonymously playing violent video games with people he did not know. Lanza’s devotion to the games, rather than to the people playing them, was so single-minded….”

Certainly a correlation there. I didn’t say causation, although one would think that a parent could find a better way of entertaining their child. Of course, that had absolutely nothing to do with his violent behavior (sic). “Devoted” and “single-minded” are not characteristics I would want associated with my child when playing violent games.

      1. Millions play those video games, most games are not visually violent and mostly cartoonish in nature.

Do not blame the video game blame the gun and the person behind it.

        1. Did you read the story? He was playing violent video games. Cartoonish in nature? Many of those games are very realistic, very gory, and rated ‘M’ for mature, because they are so graphic. He was devoted and single minded in his obsession with them. He was already unstable….they helped push him over the edge. The guns had nothing to do with it, other than being the tool used.

          1. Very well thought out and said. They where the catalyst. His mother looked the other way because it kept him out her hair and occupied.

Had she not been murdered also, I would have suggested she be brought up on charges of aiding and abetting a criminal unstable mind.

          2. “Had she not been murdered also, I would have suggested she be brought up on charges of aiding and abetting a criminal unstable mind.”
And where might we find this statute?

          3. Oh gee another lawyer in the house. Who needs a statute ?
You can be ‘charge’ with anything in this country, Anything !
Will it hold up in court, that’s another question.

          4. Perhaps a law should be created? It seems, many parents are willing to put blinders on when it comes to their own children. Look at the results.

          5. You can’t have a “criminally unstable mind” without a crime.
You would need to prove that (1) the third party knew the suspect was “unstable” and that (2) the third party knew the suspect had formulated plans to commit a specific crime.
You would need to define “unstable mind.”
Long story short, such a law would be laughed out of court as unconstitutionally vague, violating the due process clause.

          6. What results? Did you happen to fail mathematics? Go do some research on population of gamers in usa and aspergers diagnosis %ages and try to figure out how few of them actually carried out anything that caught your worthless attention to play capt. hindsight on the internet again (some peoples favorite past time in their pathetic mundane middle class lives)

          7. According to the articles I’ve read, she was trying. Had found either a school or hospital in Washington State she thought might help him. He’d been diagnosed with Asperger’s which was dropped this year from DSM’s list of diagnoses. No form of Autism (from articles/news shows I’ve seen so far) has been linked with this type of violence. Nancy Lanza was a mom, not a medical professional, doing her best so far as we know. I did my best as a mom. My mother did her best. The results weren’t perfection. When are we going to get off this Freudian merry-go-round of “It’s the mother’s fault.” Something didn’t work right in this guy’s brain.

          8. “Did you read the story? He was playing violent video games.”
So. He also had two eyes. Does that mean everyone with two eyes is a mass murderer?
Millions of people play those games and will never kill anyone.
It is highly irresponsible for anyone at this point to say video games pushed him over the edge. Unless you lived with him and interacted with him, you’ll never know.

          9. Back in the 1980′ we had an arsonist loose in Lubec. Many theories were advanced as to why this person was doing this. My favorite was the idea that playing “Dungeons and Dragons” caused this abhorrent behavior.

          10. It probably did. You just don’t realize it. And the inventors don’t want you too. Where talking mega dollars off these games.

          11. Did they also blame the cigarette lighters the arsonist used? Did they want to ban them and allow only matches? Would the point be to do anything at all just to feel better?

I think there are a lot of factors that contributed to this horror. Beyond the guns and the murder-simulator video games is the attention that Adam Lanza is getting in the press. We are well into week two and getting detail after further detail about his pained existence, life and times, motivations, beliefs and such. This can only inspire other monsters.

It is a shame his hard drive was smashed. I’d like to know how much time he spent studying the press coverage devoted to the other monsters we’ve met in recent years. I’ve a hunch stories like this one are exactly what he was looking for.

          12. Apparently, you didn’t read the story either, nor did you read my original post. It described Lanza as devoted and single-minded about playing violent video games. That’s obsessive. It indicates a problem. I said there was a correlation, not causation. The poster above said that most games aren’t very violent and are cartoonish in nature. Obviously, he hasn’t seen any of the video games that are on the market today.

Plus, I’m simply using the same logic as all of the anti-gun liberals posting on here, who suggest that simply by owning a gun millions of people are criminals, and accessories to the murders in Connecticut, and that by banning guns things like this could be prevented. That’s no different than your ‘two eyes’ statement. Highly irresponsible.

          13. Not only pushed but quite possibly induced his psychosis.

Your the lawyer and I’m the doctor. “is there a doctor in the house”

          14. If it wasn’t, we got Big problems in this country. That means even half the ones posting on this thread are ticking time bombs.

          15. Millions of people have guns, too, and that doesn’t make them mass murderers. It seems that in the liberal’s mind belonging to the NRA and owning a gun is tantamount to pulling the trigger.

If you had read my original post, you would realize that I said there was a correlation, not causation. He was obsessed with violent video games, to the point of secluding himself for days to play them. The article used the terms ‘devoted’ and ‘single-minded’ when describing his obsession with the games. Obviously, that obsession was indicative of a much deeper problem.

As I’ve stated elsewhere, I’ve also read that he was prescribed Fanapt for Aspergers, a drug that very often causes aggression and confusion, among other things, in users. If that’s true, then that was just another factor that helped exacerbate the problem.

          16. “highly irresponsible” is what these people do here.

Sheep probably try to figure out why the wolf keeps killing them, but they just don’t have the brain power is get it.

Guns, video games, over protective mother… probably all more comforting than suggesting “human nature” We’re predators, way back when, we killed everything we saw move. Occasionally in rare instances our “lizard brain” comes to the fore. Tough break for living things nearby. ,

        2. Yes because blaming an object is rational. If what we see has no affect on us, then why do they pay millions for a 30 second Superbowl commercial?

        3. Millions more own or have access to firearms, yet few ever use them in this way! You can’t rationally blame one and not the other!

        4. I guess they have to blame something sad but true when it comes to things like this happening. Just like people who own guns, guns don’t kill people, people kill people.

    1. i don’t get it…i play black ops upwards of 10 hours a day when I’m not working…i don’t feel like killing people

      1. No doubt his over protective possessive mother drove him over the edge. And perhaps some self medicating. It’s obvious she was not in fear of him because her firearms where not secured. So we can throw that theory out the window.

Also if you lack emotional maturity your very susceptible to subliminal messages. This dude got brainwashed by the games, big time. But what it really did was give him a false sense of confidence, he lack self esteem above all else.

And he really truly believed that because he was quiet and shy and different that he was smart, he wasn’t smart. He was simply an odd ball, a social reject. It is what it is, and some can make up all kinds of reasoning, but the world has always had it’s share of rejects. And always will.

        1. “No doubt his over protective possessive mother drove him over the edge.”

I see something different: A human being with a social development disorder that was so pronounced that the only person he responded to was his mother, who had raised him.
As for “subliminal messages” in games, get real.
The games most likely made him feel comfortable because they enabled him to immerse himself in a world he was better equipped to have control.

          1. Problem is, he could not control that world either. Which explains his sudden disappearance from game sites after months at a time on them.

      2. Maybe your reading comprehension ability has something to do with it, 10 hours a day is excessive and feeling like killing people probably came from isolation and mental disorders more so then the games played, thus why unless you fall and bump your head hard enough you will probably still be playing games 10 hours a day 5 years from now, lol.

many mental disorders often have isolation as one of the symptoms, social withdraw in general. Think about how many play COD and BF3 and never have violent tendencies, now think about how many of those spend years withdrawn from social contact completely, you being here displays your ability to interact socially in a fundamental way that he probably would never have choose to participate in (a open forum dialogue). Isolation is a key red flag for mental distress in general, you always have drama queens who will post “i hate people, I like being alone” with a friends list of 1,000 people farming likes, that would probably not fit this stereotype portrayed in the article above.

        1. well one of the reason i got addicted to the internet, video games, alcohol, and weed in general is because I live in a very rural part of Maine. When I was in high school from 2001-2005 my best friends, and some of whom still are – I met in chat rooms. They have more depth than anyone I’ve ever met from Maine. My parents were reluctant in the 90s to give me a video game system, but I literally became addicted to Grand Theft Auto and PS1 games. Then PS2, then I won the xbox 360 in 2005…its been downhill ever since. Now that both my parents are dead. I used some of my inheritence to buy every game system ever made…i have like 15 systems now from the meek atari 2600 to the new wii u…

    2. Like with anything, excesses are bad. His obsessive hobby and his parents passive support of this hobby were clearly not a healthy combination. Nor was mom’s hobby, which could have rubbed off on her son. Though I do believe sociopathic tendencies were in this boy’s nature, the environment he grew up in – the nurture – certainly did nothing to reduce these tendencies, and may have in fact exaggerated them.

      1. Agreed on both points. A lot of irresponsibility on the mom’s part only made a bad situation worse. No question, he already was heading that direction, though. I also read an article that said he had been prescribed Fanapt, a drug with frequent side-effects of aggression and confusion. Not blaming that either, but, if true, only made things worse. There are many contributing factors.

      2. Is it possible his mother’s passion for owning and using non-sporting firearms helped fuel that obsession?

        1. It “could” be that mother’s habit of feeding him blueberry pancakes every Saturday caused this behavior… also possibly not.

        2. That’s part of what I meant by mom’s hobby. Not just guns, but her perception of the world.

Friends and family have portrayed Mrs Lanza as a paranoid ‘survivalist’ who believed the world was on the brink of violent collapse.

  3. you know the public in general does not realize what mental illness does to a person. that person is toally isolated from the world. i dont think people realizes what it is like to be totally alone. some people are prejudiced against a mentally ill person. some make fun of that person. some avoid that person. that person inspite of the mentally ill issues senses the other person. it becomes a family secret. it even affects the family itself. can breakup a family. the other siblings avoid the mentally ill member. that person has no familly except the professionals that try to work with that person. those people sometimes becomes homeless. in general the publuc avoids someone who isnt RIGHT. very lonely life. some states have made budget cuts to save money like maine the mentally ill arent getting what they are supposed to. family members avoid that person. not a fun life. be isolated is what caused adam to snap. i guess when he found out his mom was going to put him away that was the straw. he gave up he knew that he did was wrong in the shooting he took his life

      1. I think she/he was pointing out “contributing factors” more so then “excuses”, 20 children was horrible but the Govt has drone’d many times over in other countries I don’t see any stories or mug shots, so lets all calm down and keep things in perspective, ill people will do ill things no reason to feel the need to excuse or understand it, because we probably never will.

Btw theres plenty of pics and names for you to memorize numbering in thousands if you wish to care more so then a narrow minded media influenced perspective of the world in general, reality can be harsh! I’m sure god has them in his hands now anyway.

  4. I was waiting for it… The big lie. He didn’t not use the bushmaster in the shooting. that gun was found in the car.

        1. Initial reports also had the mother being killed at the school not at home. Initial reports are almost always wrong.

  5. And so Now I’ve seen photos of:

    Lee Harvey Oswald.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lee_Harvey_Oswald

    Charles Whitman
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Whitman

    David Berkowitz
    http://crime.about.com/od/murder/p/sonofsam.htm

    Dylan Klebold
    http://www.columbine-online.com/killers/columbine-photos-pictures-eric-harris-dylan-klebold.htm

and I could go on and on. They don’t look ANYTHING alike. some have friends, some do not. Some are very smart, some not so much.

The one thing all these people have in common is that AFTER they have done their thing, many people start to analyze the predictability of the event.

Should we have known about the loner Oswald. Should the Marine Corps have detected Charles Whitman’s problem on discharge? Berkowitz had friends and family, shouldn’t they have been able to see this? Kiebold and Harris had friends, friends who actually helped them get their weapons into the school. One of these friends was a honor student with a 4.0 average grade score. How come this group of children was so isolated that no one saw this coming?

I’m really tired of all the useless “examining” by people totally unqualified to parse this behavior. I imagine that this type of behavior is a surprise always.

    1. … and it truly shows that even those who have it are just as crazy, and as John McAfee demonstrates even crazier.

      1. I’m not sure that anyone close to this story has said this family has money. The $600,000 house could be 90% mortgage and underwater.

        1. They was living high on the hog and both of ’em batterer then a fruit bat. The father got the hell away from both of them and married a sensible woman, to keep the other son from going over the edge from being around an unstable mother.

        2. Ummm, did you read the part about her $300,000/year alimony payment? The family was cetainly not part of the 99%

      1. I post a fact: houses in the Sandy hook area sell for an average of $600,000 and get 4 down arrows. the ignorance here is appalling.

  6. It doesn’t matter what you say about this lads life and events of this story there is little that can be agreed on except that it was an unthinkable waste of life, and unnecessary trauma/nightmare to those who survived.

It does make me wonder though about those who are diagnosed with mental conditions when exposed to violent video games are they somehow directly or subliminally affected? Is the net effect of these games in general a positive influence to a young developing mind? Smashing the hard drive adds another component to this puzzle, was he trying to hide something?

  7. There so many, too many, discrepancies in this case that the media should be ashamed and embarrassed. Are there no journalists left? What is going on?

Come on people, demand some answers! Second shooter coming out of the woods? Where is he? He had the bushmaster/ it was in the car? Which is it? The pistols were with him/ no they weren’t. Can’t kill yourself with a long gun, well, easily. Marksmanship? He had to reload how many times? Killed father? No he didn’t? It was Adam! No Ryan! Mom worked at school? No she didn’t! Yes she did! No one survived? Really? Number of ambulances? Movement of bodies?
Andon and on and on………not to mention, the most pressing question of all! WHY??? Unreal!!

This has much much more to do than what it seems…

The American has lost all gumption. All credibility. He doesn’t care anymore about his country and what it does. He’s more concerned with television and the latest igadget.

  8. What about the meds this guy was on? Lets have a national discussion about big pharma! Those evil scumbags get a free pass? It’s all about guns…nothing else? Laughable.

And what about Lanza s dad and the libor scandal? And the connection to James Holmes father? Come on! How do you ignore this? Seriously?

  9. Lanzas mom a prepper? Nope. I call bs. She had plenty of cash and resources.
Don’t buy it one bit. This is a blatant lie to explain how Lanza had a bullet proof vest. Where else would he get it so quick? Oh, right, his wealthy mother was a closet dooms day prepper!! Hah! Yeah, ok…….

      1. You’re missing the point. It isn’t true! If she were? I don’t care! Do you see the problem with making this up???

  10. Don’t confuse autism with mental illness. Don’t assume the two are mutually exclusive. If Mrs Lanza was soley focused on the autism, it would be easy to explain away the symptoms of her son’t mental illness. Her choices were legal and she had what she believed to be her son’s best interest at heart. None of us lived her life or suffered her anguish over parenting her child, not even the child’s father.

    1. People with autism can also have mental illness. And, that is so very, very complicated. And all awful, terrible circumstances that Davida Willette apply.

    2. well he obviously has some kind of mental problem going on because you don’t just go out and brutally murder people so something mentally was wrong end of story!!

        1. I agree. Although she didn’t pull the trigger, it’s just as much her fault. There is a special place in hell for her just as there is for him.

Nice thing to say? nope. But neither were his actions and her inactions.

          1. He “had problems” as in aspergers, aspergers does not mean a person can not shoot or own a gun, their right to gun ownership is just as valid as a non diagnosed person; “Asperger’s is not associated with behavior patterns that are violent.” as the medical examiner put it, meaning no you can’t strip someone diagnosed of aspergers from videos games or guns, as there is no connection between the two except in peoples running imaginations.

Millions play those games, given the diagnosis rate of aspergers and autism, I can assure you plenty more play those games with those disorders and have no problem avoiding “mass killings”. Your paranoia/schizophrenic attitude is troubling. For one, she is a murder victim who did not willingly participate in the slaying of any individual, but merely practiced her right as a citizen to own a firearm. They are only highlighted as “problems with society” because media makes them into “heroes” by way of attention, in reality there is staggering %ages of people who would be discriminated against by your biased mind set, you would probably create 20 more tragedies trying to blame someone for actions of another person. You didn’t give her rights, you have no say in taking away her rights as you already know given your disgruntled minority viewpoint that doesn’t ever go beyond drunk kitchen table conversations after surfing the webs. She was murdered, and you probably have no clue of anything or anyone in that community, all of which probably would have supported and helped her through the tragedy had she not been murdered, you would have been the same person though disgruntled on the net complaining she didn’t take action while the people who actually matter (not the internet commenters) are on the ground actually mending the wound and mourning, get over yourself your opinion is irrelevant when it becomes slander to a deceased victim of a homicide.

          2. Why not trade tit for tat ? You get to banned multi-round firing weapons while the others get to banned violent video games. Seems like a fair trade off.

Or we can revisit the asylums, open ’em up again. As well as mass sterilization programs for those who might pose a problem raising a healthy balanced child.

The old notion of poverty and deprived upbringing has been shattered by all these mass murders as all come from good backgrounds with educated parents.

So obviously, we would need to catch these potential dysfunctional people at the college level before they breed more havoc onto society.

We could even offer a special, bring your pet with you for 10% off a netuer or spade.

        2. How many others supply their kids with violent video games, looks at the shows kids watch today. society has a lot to do with this also

          1. see it all the time. parents want to be friends instead of parents. and if someone is in there twenties, it’s more of the “he had a hard upbringing” or some other nonsense.

          2. I agree. Look at almost every show on tv today–all include very graphic violence. Then we wonder when kids grow up too violent. Psychology does say that violence seen on tv DOES affect us. Some people who have strong moral ability will be able to rationalize their own actions and fiction, but those without the capability to do that may be more affected by violent shows and games.

          3. I agree 100% with your comment………BDN PLEASE take down this young mans pic, and story. It is emotionally disturbing; every time you click the BND, There it is, in your face; a constant REMINDER! The story will be with us for many years, no need to relive the horror, on our local newspaper, repetitively. ..THANKS and Merry Christmas!

  11. This article is dangerous in so many ways, it’s hard to know exactly where to begin taking it apart. The biggest dangers I can think of is that it paints a false portrait of a complex problem and offers incredibly dangerous methods of predicting and preventing horrific events like the one at Sandy Hook. The writers of this article (and remember, there are three of them) were either far too lazy in their research to do a simple Google Images search for Adam Lanza or were motivated by the political charge of the moment for more gun control. Anyone doing a Google Image search for this boy’s name would see many pictures of him smiling or offering a goofy or geeky smirk or smile for the camera. The only photo I can see where he looks like a wide-eyed loon is the one we’ve all seen. I, myself, thought that picture made him look crazy, yes, but oddly like Ms. Hathaway from the Beverly Hillbillies. But seriously, to pen an article that says that all the photos ever taken of Adam Lanza were of the wild-eyed, vacant stare type is stupid. And reckless. It offers a way for otherwise ill-prepared parents of a child with mental issues such as Lanza’s to gauge the predictability of anger-fueled outbursts where shooting sprees take place. And parents will say to themselves, “My child, who does have mental problems, laughs, he smiles and most of the photos we have of him show a kooky nut, not a grimacing Hannibal Lecter, so he probably won’t snap and use our collection of miltary-grade weapons to go on a killing spree down at the mall.”

To paint this troubled young man as a never-smiling, always vacant, non-responsive nut on the edge of outburst gives license to parents of similar children or even adult children they maintain guardianship of, to throw off any worry or concern. In reality, these parents live with constant uncertainty of how to approach the way they handle every day to day event with their kids. They might note that their children are slowly moving away from them emotionally but they didn’t see, from day one, an empty vacuum, an empty shell of a human, in their child. They remember days the child laughed or had fun with friends or just alone playing. For some of those parents, I’m sure they held tight to those memories because there might have been so few of those moments. And the belief that parents hold in their children to overcome and succeed and live happier lives is something so powerful it can only become more emboldened by the sight of their child expressing happiness. It is quite dangerous and moreover irresponsible for anyone to scribe an article implying that Adam Lanza was a soulless robot who hadn’t the ability to express emotion should have been a siren of danger to any and all around him. Because that is a caricature of mental illness. It isn’t reality based.

I hope it’s not too much to ask that next time Washington Post asks three writers to put together an article, that one of them spend a minute to do a Google Images search. Or consult a psychotherapist or anyone in the mental health field. “Excuse me, doctor, is it true that all future mass murderers have never smiled? Really? Well, that’s what I surmised from Silence Of The Lambs…”

  12. This guy put it over on everyone including his mom. He not only meticulously planned out his murdering rampage………he also had the foresight to destroy the hard drive of his computer. Rot in hell you POS!

  13. “The weapons were for ‘self-defense,’ said Marsha Lanza. ‘She lived alone. She was a female, lived alone.’

“Nancy, who grew up on a farm in New Hampshire in a family that owned guns, believed that teaching Adam how to shoot would give him ‘a sense of responsibility,’ her friend Russell Hanoman said on NBC News. ‘Guns require a lot of respect, and she really tried to instill that responsibility within him, and he took to it.”

    The humble Farmer

  14. Interesting that Connecticut legislature discussed a bill that would have addressed some the mental health issue this young man and his mother struggled with. It would have given his mother, and the State some options to help keep he,and those around him, safe. Dose anyone want to guess who came out against this bill this past spring? What organizations fought the hardest and the arguments used

  15. Why is the media still wasting time on this perp? His story is over. He is old news. Now the survivors are an ongoing story and far more worthy of our concern. Ignore the perp, he is not worthy of attention, just the victims and survivors are worthy of our attention when they are ready for it, if ever.

    1. I think it’s important to turn over every pebble in Lanza’s life to attempt to determine if there was anything anyone reasonably could have done to prevent this tragedy in an effort to prevent future ones.

      1. Sadash, You are entitled to your opinion, but I have lived through mass murders from all the way back to the Manson family. We endlessly study them only to find that each of them is an individuals and that we learn absolutely nothing that would stop the next one. Remember one of the reasons to be a mass murderer is to become famous and have everybody know about you. The crime is all for the perps ego need, it rarely matters who the victims are to the perp. So each time we do this we encourage the next nobody to try the same thing and that is what I want to stop, the copy cat.

Meanwhile, we give almost no attention to the victims and the survivors. If there is anyone we could help it would be them, not the perps. Even in legal cases the victim is of no importance. If I were to kill you, ironically I would be not seen as having committed a crime against you but a crime against society. So society by the way of our imperfect legal system decides what to do about it. There is no payback of any kind for your survivors in justice system. Neither you, nor you survivors ever get any justice out of our legal system. You as a victim and as the surviving members of families and friends have absolutely no rights in our legal system. Only the criminal has any rights at all, but no one gives a damn about you, not the law, not the police, not the media and not the society. After you die, you are quickly forgotten and your survivors are told get over it. Nobody cares. That to me, is a far bigger crime against the victim and his or her family. Notice that Charles Manson is alive and well and nothing was ever done for the families of the victims. That means society commits a crime against the victims families afterward.

Quick can you give me a name of any of the victims in the school shooting? Yet you have no trouble remembering the perps name, which is exactly why he did it so you would know almost everything about him. In very ancient times every record of the person that did bad would be destroyed and his name never ever mentioned. But we will hear about the perp for months and years to come. There will be books on him, scholarly papers on him, even at least one movie perhaps more. But nothing about the victims and their families at all.

        1. I know. I know. I, too, well remember the Manson murders. I don’t disagree with a thing you’ve said here. I just hope – I don’t know for what. I don’t think gun control is the answer. I don’t think video games are to blame. I do believe a lot needs to be done to our mental health care system – but what? I don’t know. I don’t want to live in a society where armed police or soldiers are at every venue. I don’t have suggestions, just a broken heart.

          1. I am not sure there is any surefire way. I think I would like to make the large clips outlawed. Even having to reload might help. But the have pretty strict gun laws and that did not work. The schools was locked down so that normally you would have to get buzzed in even to get inside and that did not work. Other places have the video games all over the world and don’t have the violence we do, other countries have more broken families, England for one, yet do not have our level of violence. I understand the broken heart because these are the most innocent of victims.

We do seem to love violence as a society, perhaps if we did not like violence to watch of take part in, but that will take a far greater change than I know how to do. Meanwhile kids this age are being killed all around the world and we don’t seem to feel as strongly for them, say cluster bombs used on kids in Syria, or even our own when they are in poorer neighborhoods. It only seems to become major news if it happens in a nice neighborhood and the people involved are white, Meanwhile the pain is the same for all the families of kids that die.

I don’t know the solution either, or if there even is one. Though I would like to think that some day something like this will be not likely to happen. But we humans are going to have to get our act together to make it happen. That includes making war far rarer and crime far rarer and dictatorships lot rarer and far less child workers and soldiers, not to mention child sex workers. Lets also end abuse in families and incest. and bullying in schools. We are taking about killing and damaging millions upon millions of kids daily. the add lack of health care in most of the world, and starvation. The total tragedy is mine numbing, but we cannot afford to become numbed to it, not if we are going to ever change it.

          2. There was no mental health care system hundreds of years ago and people didnt go around killing babies. It is not the fault of the system. Look at the chemicals we put in our systems. Look at the violence in our lives. Look at the lack of accountability and responsibility in our parenting. And stop blaming any one else.

          3. Poor analogy, hundreds of years ago 20 year olds were not living in the culture/society we live in today, nor did they have access to guns as easily (would have to have been more then well-off, probably rich by those days standards to even have that type of manufactured piece pre industrial revolution.)

Also secondly, Media is alot bigger today and covers things in near realtime with 24 hour networks available to people en mass, again a fail analogy on your part.

In one breathe you cleanse the “system” in the next your rambling about chemicals (of which ALL humans are naturally in contact with) and “violence in our lives”. Allowing her son to play games all day did not cause him to shoot people up, hundreds of millions play those games so statistically speaking your spreading false implications blaming games, and his mom for letting him be isolated and play games all day like he wanted to, given he was diagnosed with aspergers and had social interaction disorders, you can’t expect her to drop him off at a park or rec center with 10 kid normal kids playing ball can you? LOL…

I agree you can’t blame, thats why you shouldn’t be blaming his mom, video games, and violence in general, no words on a piece of paper will prevent a person who wants to harm you from doing so. I think his mother was more accountable and responsible then you could ever account for given you don’t even know her on a personal level, have you raised a 20 year old with aspergers too? Easy job, just throw em in social situations and make sure they eat the organic healthy foods not them bad chemical foods 99% of the population that doesn’t mass murder eat, your right there is totally a correlation in “chemicals” what ever kind your implying, or you mean all chemicals like the ones naturally produced in your body, those are all bad and probably resulted in this shooting of 20 children, good point there jersey.

I think you blamed like 5 diff things and her whole family in the same post you say “stop blaming anyone”. You think that chicken from kfc pumped full of steriods made him do it? I should stop eating there a few times a year sheesh!

Isolation from his mental disorder and social inept existence probably resulted in his ability to actually shoot his own mother, and then murder indiscriminately innocent children, he did not think he was in a game, hell the number one rule you learn in a video game is that you respawn. There is no respawn in real life, hence why he had the side arms for the ending. Of all the things we don’t know and speculate about here, we do know this: he was sane enough to plan ahead for his suicide by bringing the side arms.

          4. Probably better to just blame it all on some form of ‘mental illness’. It’s easier, and will allow the Lanza family to be seen in public without being persecuted.

That is the ‘real problem’ in today’s world but more importantly in American society. We where dupe into believing there weren’t any problems that exercise, a pill and a hallmark greeting card couldn’t fix.

The media tells us what to believe, how to think and what to buy. The game is rig before we are ever born. America is crawling with Adam Lanza’s dysfunctional ticking time bombs trying to create the perfect world, trying to control their world through a fantasy they could never create with their own minds.

A society, a nation that created ‘living Zombies’.

Get educated, get trained, get armed. The Apocalypse is upon us.

          5. a dope boy,

Certain various people would like to train us in what to think , what to want and buy and what to believe. However despite the fact there are well trained experts trying to control us, we still can decide to think for ourselves. By the way most of the things that endanger us cannot be stopped with a gun, though being armed is not a bad idea, it is just not the solution to most things. never let anyone tell you what to be afraid of, what to get angry about or, what you should think or believe. If you allow it, plenty of people will try to manipulate you and then you become merely a puppet. Nor is it only the government and advertisers that you much watch out for, it is all supposed leaders, experts, family and even your friends that will try to decide things for you, something that you can never afford to allow. Most people allow it only because they are too lazy to figure out for themselves.

          6. jersey730@yahoo.com,

Actually killing kids and babies in nothing new, read the Old Testament and it talks of the good guys bashing babies heads against brick wall. Just as rape and plunder where the normal part of war. Cheating people was part of normal business and robing the poor was the way government survived while the wealthy lived high on the hog and let the rest starve.. What has changed a bit is what we consider to be normal and actually for all the faults of modern mankind we may not be as vicious as most of our ancestors were. But we do have this habit of relying on the media to decide what we pay attention to and we can ignore things if the people are not, the right color, the right class, or it does not effect us directly. Any of these evils happening affects the victims in much the sam way, only most of it will be ignored as not newsworthy, like not counting the number of civilians our military kills in any war, while holding other military, governments, and terrorist to task for every innocent killed. We continue to judge others more harshly than we would allow ourselves to be judged. Human beings are very similar no matter what conditions that they live under, they have many of the same strong points and many of the same weknesses. Some day we might consider all of us as we, instead of us and them.

  16. Holy smokes: $300K/year alimony which was more than half his salary? Divorce laws in this country are ridiculous.

    1. The father agreed to it; wasn’t court mandated. It was so the mother could stay at home and try to do what she felt necessary in care and raising of their son.

      1. How do you know? Not that it matters…although I think I could raise my kids without working on a mere $200K

  17. Not ONE of the Sandy Hook families has come out with anger, or hate, like I see on this page. Many Sandy Hook folk are shocked, saddened….quietly wondering at what went wrong when asked. NOT ONE OF THEM has looked to “evil”. I doubt, from what I am hearing of the families already, that they are willing to take so narrow a view of this tragedy. Be at least as big as the families of Sandy Hook. If they can take a more intelligent view of all of this, in their overwhelming grief, can you not be big enough to attempt it as well? They don’t want you to hash it over, ineffectually, call people “evil” without question, claim that it was a lack of morality or personal responsibility….They want you to HELP MAKE IT BETTER.

    1. Nicole Foster, I doubt that either you or I can honesty represent what the people in Sandy Hook are feeling and yes I would imagine that anger and hatred is among the things they feel with helplessness, frustration, misery, depression. All of that is part of the grieving process but most of that is done in private which is why we will not know for sure. As for us we are giving our opinion, perhaps trying make sense out of something that is not sensible nor logical, that is what this forum is here for. None of us can make it better nor speed the healing that is outside of anyone’s power. Nor will we be able to prevent then next person who decides to die famous by mass killing. But I do think we do waste far too much time on the killer as that part of the story is over while the story of the survivors will go on for decades to come

  18. Mommy never should have introduced her little crackpot to real guns. Do we really need any other explanation?

  19. We need to stop putting focus on this sick person. Time to start healing. Pray for the 26 that lost their lives.

  20. Wow a whole article of nothing close to the truth. How about starting with the fact that his father and the Aurora theater shooter’s father were BOTH scheduled to testify before the Senate in the banking fiasco, and go on with the truth from there. This has nothing to do with autism, and everything to do with Government control, and the sick fact that this and the theater were both orchestrated by the Government of the United States of America upon it’s very own people.

    1. So you’re saying what? The Gov’t shot up Aurora and Newtown and used these boys as fall guys somehow? Or doped them up and used mind control to get them to do it? I agree, bizarre coincidence, but I’m not getting how the Gov’t “orchestrated” these shootings.

  21. Lets see if they find Chromosome 22 Deletion – or if they find it, that they will admit it. To admit that mental illness is “genetic” would mean that it is not a disorder but a genetic disease and a whole lot of people have worthless non-medical psychology degrees. Check out chromosome 22 deletion on pubmed where all research is published.

  22. I am so sorry for the families that lost their children due to this violent act. However, really sick of the media going over and over this story. If you were one of the parents would you want to pick up the newspaper or turn on the television? Everywhere you look there is something about this story, let the families grieve in private. This stuff is going to continue happening as long as institutions are closed. Many of these people that roam the streets that have mental illness are not being taken care of and because they are not it is only going to get worse. I am sure this kid’s mother loved him but probably did not have many options available for him to go to, so she kept him at home when he probably should have been in some kind of institution where he was watched an taken care of and because they are now all closed we are going to see more and more violent crimes in my opinion.

  23. Something worth noting, the blue background and quality of picture almost looks like a DMV picture? I’ve seen some pretty bug eyed pics and DMV/ID pics are always top of that list, look at all the DMV pics posted, rarely do they appear appealing, or “in social context” Lol..

  24. Stop giving this SOB his 15 minutes of fame. I dont care about him. How about an article a day for 26 days about the beautiful lives of the beautiful children he killed. By giving him his fame you are only promoting this behavior in every sick person who wants the world to know that they are hurting.

    1. I’m sure if a mentally ill person wanted to kill 20 children and his mom, regardless of if the news reports it, he is going to carry it out. He did not leave any “electronic” footprint, or any manifesto, again your paranoia and schizo traits seem to be getting the best of you, this article doesn’t portray him as seeking attention, or leaving behind some kind of crazed list of grievances. Just failing to hit the nail on the head at all, most of your points are out of context or just plain wrong statistically speaking given there is 300+ million people in the usa, and the numbers of these tragedies that get you so butthurt over are very few and far between, maybe you should stop reading if you dont care, I know thats hard to comprehend.

I think you watch too much news, dont ever stroll over to liveleaks website, Oh sheesh if you seen uncensored media you would probably not beable to handle reality anymore most likely, Lol.

  25. Shouldn’t that be “…the only person whom he connected with”?

Objects of phrases require an objective pronoun.

  26. Each school shooting sees the pattern of forcing school socialization that is appropriate for all, over and over, year after year. Each discipline and encouragement to fit in are soul slicing. Mom moving on and sending him away may have been the straw. I think of the movie “A Beautiful Mind”, the internal torture but the constant support, love and dedication from one made it bearable.

  27. What? Another sandy hook fairy tale? You people comment as if you know the story! Amazing! There are so many holes in this story I’m not sure where to begin!

This lie that she was a “prepped”? Really?

    Time to employ critical thinking
