RANGELEY, Maine — If you know someone who might like a ski resort for Christmas, now is the time to act.
After 10 years and $40 million worth of upgrades, the Berry family is ready to sell the popular resort. The asking price: $12 million for 400 acres that includes the ski trails and lifts, the base lodge and most of the surrounding 121 condominium units.
The property was listed with a Portland broker a month ago. The Berrys said they will consider whether to take on a partner or sell Saddleback outright.
“There are several options available to us,” Bill Berry said Friday night.
Saddleback’s workforce has increased from 66 to 250 since the family bought it in 2003, according to Faith Berry, one of seven Berry children. The family wants to ensure that the resort will continue to create jobs in a part of Maine with limited employment opportunities.
The Berry family will keep 7,600 of the 8,000 acres it bought 10 years ago and hopes to remain involved on some level, according to the Waterville Morning Sentinel.
“Saddleback is one of the most special places in the world,” Faith Berry was quoted as saying in the Sentinel. “It’s beautiful and exquisite and the townspeople are wonderful. We want to try to make sure [the sale] is done right. We want it done in a way that is sensitive to the beauty and the environment.”
She said, “Our hope for a buyer is someone willing to be supportive of the local area, to be involved.”
I hope they’re not leaving the ski business to start an investment firm.

i never went skiing or snowboarding…but would be nice if they re-opened it…maybe get some more people to come up this way. but there really isn’t much for people to do up here when not skiing…black frog? stress free moose? woody’s ? LOL

Why sell it… bad decision making
Skiing and snowmobiling in Maine, is becoming a lost cause,just look at the Camden Snowbowl, if they can unload it, seems the best move they can make, while keeping most of the acreage.
Snowbowl is widely supported in the Camden area, and is doing just fine. Relying on mother nature, no matter where you are, is tough……So why throw in the towel so to speak?

squaw mountain is closed because it’s owner sucks at life.
Camden ski bowl is a local hill, nothing more, nothing less and there doing fine.
Sugarloaf and sunday river have been doing great, saddleback is a great mountain and will not close. It will be just fine.
