BANGOR, Maine — Buffalo Wild Wings is still coming to Bangor, but it will be opening later than initially planned and will be joined by some big company.
Rather than one 65,500-square-foot retail plaza, the new $4.5 million Stillwater Crossing development plan calls for a three-building complex totaling 72,500 square feet with Buffalo Wild Wings grill and bar in one, three to five businesses in another, and a 55,000-square-foot anchor building occupied by Hobby Lobby.
“Hobby Lobby is like the Christmas Tree Shops, A.C. Moore, and Jo-Ann fabric all rolled into one,” said Vincent Maietta, Stillwater Crossing’s principal owner and developer. “And obviously a lot of people are already familiar with Buffalo Wild Wings.”
David Gould, Bangor’s planning officer, said Buffalo Wild Wings was “hoping to get in and be open by Thanksgiving, but the plan for the crossing has been modified.”
Maietta said that, weather permitting, construction should start in April and tenants should be open for business in July. He expects the construction work to employ 80 to 100 people and the retail stores to create another 150 to 200 full- and part-time jobs.
According to the company website, Buffalo Wild Wings is one of the top 10 fastest-growing restaurant chains in the country with more than 850 locations nationwide. Bangor franchise owner and operating partner Jeff Applegate said this will be the chain’s 550th franchise. The other 300 are corporate-owned.
According to its website, Hobby Lobby operates 524 stores in 42 states. The stores’ average size is 55,000 square feet. The Oklahoma City-based business was founded by company CEO David Green in 1970 and began operation in 1972.
The original plan for Stillwater Crossing involved a 65,500-square-foot retail plaza at 461 Stillwater Ave. — the site previously permitted and planned for a Shaw’s supermarket in 2007.
“Hobby Lobby solicited us and we had to hold the project off for a few months while we negotiated with them, but we just couldn’t seem to consummate the deal with them and got frustrated,” Maietta said.
Maietta said company representatives eventually re-established negotiations with him through different people and things proceeded much more expeditiously.
This proposal is much closer to the original Shaw’s supermarket plan, except the Hobby Lobby is 5,000 square feet larger than Shaw’s would have been and there are two other standalone buildings: one is 7,200 square feet with a patio for Buffalo Wild Wings and the other is a 10,000-square-foot structure for three to five businesses.
“It’s always nice to do a project where you have the majority of it preleased before you even break ground, especially in this economy,” said Maietta. “I already have far more tenants interested in that third building than we have space for, so it looks like I’ll have it fully occupied before we finish and open it in July.”
Maietta said he expects to agree on a 15-year lease with Hobby Lobby and a 10-year deal plus another 20 years in option clauses with Buffalo Wild Wings.
The plan, which will have to be presented to the Bangor planning board and Maine Department of Environmental Protection for approval, also calls for a parking capacity for 290 vehicles.
“We don’t anticipate any problems or hiccups with DEP,” said Aaron Shaw, site designer and James W. Sewall Co. senior project manager. “This layout is more efficient and actually works a lot better with what was conceived for the Shaw’s plan. Some of the curbing, landscaping, lighting and underground connections for electrical, sewage and water won’t have to be altered, so it could reduce costs.”
Gould said the earliest the planning board, which meets the first and third Tuesdays of each month, could evaluate and vote on the plan would be late January.
“It appears like this other plan is a more viable option and satisfies most of the site specs,” said Gould, who added that the whole piece of property is about nine acres.
The zone allows for 72,500 square feet of retail space with no more than three principal buildings, the largest of which cannot exceed 60,000 square feet.
Maietta was effusive in his praise for the city staff members he has worked with while planning the project.
“Bangor appears to be a very sought-after town and people want to be there and it seems like a good town to do business in,” he said.

Just what is needed for Stilwater Ave… Add some more traffic lights too! Oh, I hope the planning board approves added police to cover the area!
There is already a traffic light at the entrance to where this is being built.
I am sure this will create a nice traffic headache
We already have a nice traffic headache there, this will be a traffic migraine…
I could only wish for what you call a traffic nightmare…come on down (Hampton Roads, VA) and try out our traffic for a couple of days (several military bases, several tunnels and as many people as the entire state of Maine in Hampton Roads) and then let me know if that’s still such a big nightmare :)
How many places to buy felt and glitter does one town need?
Scrooge,Grinch.
How about we all Hobby Lobby for a left turn off I-95 onto Stillwater Ave: http://www.bangorbytes.com/2012/09/no-left-turn-off-of-i-95-stillwater.html
Yes please!!–That was one of the dumbest things ever planned!!
Not really. The exit was intended to ease congestion on Hogan Road, not provide access to the residential section of Stillwater. Residents of Stillwater Avenue and surrounding neighborhoods didn’t want an increase in traffic in that area.
I find it interesting that 3 of the first 4 threads on this story are complaining (in some way shape or form) about this store coming in, bringing all kinds of jobs. Yet, on any other given story, some of these same people will be complaining about lack of jobs.
he jobs they are looking for would start at $30.00 and hour for unskilled labor, free medical, 6 weeks vacation, 12 week paid maternity leave, and the end product must still be competitively priced.
…and I want two weeks paid vacation up front. I need a break before I start.
Yay – more minimum wage, dead end service jobs selling junk from China that nobody really needs! Is that better?
Whats better, some money or no money?
Get an education, then.
Yay!
Good moves, but the traffic lights and patterns need to be improved, just as they would have been necessary for Shaws.
Hobby Lobby is not “just another store for glitter and felt”, much better than most. However, just like Chik-Fil-A, it won’t be open on Sunday.
Yup, another Jesus store. Great.
Hey, if you don’t like it don’t shop there.
I agree. Can’t wait!
and people exiting Drew St might be able to save a few minutes now waiting for the lights to change green for them
I cannot wait to have some new stores and places to eat in Bangor and to those that think Bangor has a lot of traffic, it doesn’t.
I agree with all you said. I have to laugh at all of these comments about “traffic” in Bangor. It’s obvious that those complaining have never lived outside of Bangor. :)
That’s true! Even for a county boy, Bangor is drive-able, however I get terrified in Seattle:)
I lived in somerville ma for a few years. Most people here don’t know what the word traffic means
One of the things I wanted to try when I moved down to Portland, was Buffalo Wild Wings…I didnt go to this restaurant until after my wife and i went to Red Robin. What a difference. Red Robbin was reasonably priced and the service was awesome. The food was the best burgers i had ever eaten and they gave an endless supply of soft drinks and steak fries. Meanwhile, to say Disappointed would be a severe understatement in Buffalo Wild Wings. They have nearly 40 different toppings that you can put on your wings when you order them, which are the size of a McNugget. They also seemed prefab to the wife and I. I was expecting Buffalo wings that would be out of this world, and instead they couldnt even come close to competing with Brewster’s boneless buffalo wings or Geaghans. They price was outrageous as well. For ONE beer your looking at five bucks, then to pay for the meal, well, it cost the wife and I nearly 50.00 and we were actually still hungry, because the food was so bad. I would definately suggest against this place. Too bad the city council voted down getting an awesome Buffalo Wing place, such as Hooters, in town, when they open the doors to this rat trap.

Their prices are not outrageous at all. Two people could eat there for under 25 dollars with ease and any place is going to charge 5 bucks for a beer, that is nothing new.
I’m not sure how often you have been there Kevin, but the 9.99 12 wing meal, was the size of Chicken McNuggets, not exactly what i would call a bargain…as for the 5.00 dollar beer, i think you ought to get out more often if you are paying that much because i know of 20 places in Bangor and the Portland area where I dont need to pay that much.
It is rare I drink when I go out to eat but the last time I did have a beer at the Texas Roadhouse it was between 4 and 5 dollars and a 12 wing meal would fill me up just fine.
I have to echo everything good you said about Red Robin!!!
They rock. Singularly, the very best, very most consistant, most, best value, best service, best prices. Wonderful.
I know Red Robin was planning to open a store in Bangor, but Longhorn’s got that location first…So they opened another store in Scarborough instead…
…Bangor’s loss!
My wife and I travel to Augusta from Bangor once a month or so, ostensiblly, for “errands”, but, really, it’s to go to Red Robin for lunch. :-)
No, that would be Red Robin’s loss. The Bangor area is a major hub of activity and they know that. They will be coming anyways. They are not stupid.
Rumor is they are opening in Brewer at the old Beef O’ Bradys.
Edit: As I stated, it is/was a rumor and now it might be a false.
Beef O’Bradys is gone? Never even noticed.
They closed about a month ago.
Rumor is wrong, sorry to burst your bubble. From what i have heard when in city hall, its gonna be a steak house, but not red robins
Well that is a bummer but as I said, it was a a rumor.
nice I cant wait best burgers. besides make at home ,get the blue cheese crusted YUM.
Buffalo Wild Wings got some priceless free advertising this weekend when their sprinkler-during-the-game commercial came true during the Miami/Seattle game. I wish them luck with the Bangor venture…can’t wait to try it out!
The construction jobs are good, and the retail jobs can be entry level, leading to other things. Just the fact they are building means that those companies think the economy is ticking up and they want to be ready. Overall though, this is typical planning. Who would ever want to drive all the way over to Joannes on the other side of the mall through all that traffic? #snark -I think that if that Buffalo Wild Wings is the franchisee I am thinking about (with the 5% surcharge for health benefits for the servers) then I won’t be eating there, and I love wings.
Dear Santa, all I want for Christmas is a legal left turn at that intersection. Thank you!
Yeah, why is that? It doesn’t make any sense coming from I-95 and you can’t go left. Who’s bright idea was that? It’s a traffic light, put a green left turn arrow on it. Why is this so difficult?
People who lived in the area said they didn’t want a left-hand turn. It’s no big mystery.
Well, it’s a mystery if you’re not from around here.
Why wouldn’t you want a left turn lane? Since when does MDOT listen to the wishes of people?
Subject: [bdn] Re: Bangor’s Stillwater plaza plan now includes Hobby Lobby
The interchange’s purpose was to ease congestion on Hogan Road, not provide access to the residential neighborhoods off Stillwater Avenue.
The Sheep seem to be happy
Its not on the Hobby Lobby web site under “new stores in 2013”: http://hobbylobby.com/stores/store_news.cfm
We’re getting a Ho66y Lo66y. Sure, it’s just a cheap Chinese knock-off of the original, but what do you expect?
More minimum wage jobs that don’t pay the bills.
Yeah, basically. The biggest problem with Bangor is that they’re trying too hard to make it “hip” (or small town Maine understanding of “hip”) at the expense of actual livable wage jobs. The “Young Professionals” of Bangor seem more concerned with playing dress up of what they see on Portlandia/New Girl than any serious attempt at building up the city. They seem more worried about being seen as “trendy” than they are at actually making the area appeal to anyone outside of small town Maine. No one sees Bangor as some “cultural hub” except rural kids looking for an ego boost at pretending they’re urban/cultured because they’ve tried chai/sushi while the rest of their high school class is still drinking High Life in a field.
Dont be so gloomy Cynical.. just put a bird on it.
they did, “the pigeon”… The whole area is food service jobs and personal care jobs (at what, $7-12 an hour average), and yet the people “building up the town” seem more concerned with the local music and bar scene than seriously trying to create meaningful growth. And that’s not even getting into all the other issues like the drugs and generational poverty getting all but ignored to pretend that this is some up and coming community…
Hooters is much better all around.
Are these places attracting new customers or are they just spreading out the customer base?
I figure someday people will ask themselves what that thing in their kitchen is, They might have to google it, yet I will give you a hint, OK? It is called a Stove.
Hobby Lobby?
Dang, Bangor’s sure in the big time now.
I for one am excited for Buffalo Wild Wings… a relaxing place to watch a game with good food
