WASHINGTON — CIA Director David H. Petraeus abruptly resigned Friday after a brief but troubled tenure as head of America’s clandestine spy service, citing his “extremely poor judgment” for engaging in an extramarital affair that the FBI had uncovered in an unrelated investigation.
The scandal threw the CIA into turmoil three days after the presidential election, and caused consternation at the White House, which had assumed the widely respected former war commander in Iraq and Afghanistan would keep his national security position in the second Obama administration.
In a written statement to the CIA workforce, Petraeus said he went to the White House on Thursday afternoon and asked President Barack Obama “to be allowed, for personal reasons, to resign.” He said Obama “graciously accepted” his resignation on Friday.
“After being married for over 37 years, I showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extramarital affair,” Petraeus wrote. “Such behavior is unacceptable, both as a husband and as the leader of an organization such as ours.”
Citing the “extraordinary work” the CIA had performed, Petraeus added that he “will always regret the circumstances that brought that work with you to an end.”
The acknowledgement of an affair came as a shock to the national security community. Intelligence officers who engage in illicit behavior may be vulnerable to blackmail by foreign spy services. The CIA has an unusually high turnover rate of directors, but none previously resigned after publicly acknowledging a sexual affair.
Two former CIA officials told the Los Angeles Times/Tribune Washington Bureau that the FBI inquiries led Petraeus to disclose the affair. Another U.S. official, who was briefed on the case, said Petraeus was not the target of the investigation.
NBC News reported that Petraeus biographer Paula Broadwell “is under FBI investigation for improperly trying to access his email and possibly gaining access to classified information,” citing law enforcement officials.
Broadwell is the author, with Washington Post journalist Vernon Loeb, of “All In,” a favorable Petraeus biography. She had extensive access to Petraeus in Afghanistan.
The law enforcement officials told NBC they do not believe the FBI investigation will result in any criminal charges, and that Petraeus is not under investigation. Broadwell did not respond to telephone and email messages. Reached by phone, Loeb said he had no knowledge of whether the reports were true.
In a statement, Obama lauded Petraeus for his “extraordinary service” in the military and CIA. He did not mention Petraeus’ indiscretion, but said his “thoughts and prayers are with Dave and Holly Petraeus, who has done so much to help military families through her own work. I wish them the very best at this difficult time.”
Holly Petraeus, a longtime advocate for military families, is assistant director of the Office of Servicemember Affairs at the recently opened Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
Obama named Petraeus’ deputy, Michael J. Morell, as interim CIA director. Morell, a career CIA officer, served in that position briefly after Leon E. Panetta left the CIA last year to become defense secretary.
Morell was an eyewitness to two major events in recent history. As a CIA briefer, he was traveling with President George W. Bush on Sept. 11, 2001, when news broke of the terrorist attacks in New York, Pennsylvania and Washington. And as deputy CIA director, he was in the Situation Room with Obama on May 1, 2011, when U.S. Navy SEALs killed Osama bin Laden in Abbottabad, Pakistan.
A White House official said Friday that Morell has a close relationship with Obama, and that he frequently briefed Obama during planning for the raid that ultimately killed bin Laden.
Petraeus, who turned 60 this week, was named to head the CIA in September 2011. He retired from the military as a four-star general, having played a key role in turning around a deteriorating situation in the Iraq War, and then spending a year commanding the war in Afghanistan, to less certain effect.
His military career was seen to give him a strong advantage as the civilian spy service increasingly ran military-style operations, including launching lethal drone missile strikes in Pakistan, Yemen and elsewhere. His supporters said he had political ambitions, and sometimes offered his name as a possible presidential candidate.
But Petraeus’ 14-month tenure was marked by criticism inside the agency, where he was seen as aloof, and by some lawmakers on Capitol Hill, who said he did not fully respond to their requests.
In recent weeks, he faced growing questions about why the CIA failed to anticipate the attack by armed militants on a U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, despite a large CIA presence in the city. Two of the four Americans killed during the Sept. 11 attack were CIA employees.
Petraeus’ no-nonsense military style — and some quirky idiosyncrasies — rubbed some CIA managers the wrong way. In May, a leaked CIA cable disclosed that when Petraeus traveled overseas, he wanted fresh pineapple every night before bed, sliced bananas atop his cereal in the morning, and pre-designed morning runs that avoided intersections.
Obsessed with physical fitness, Petraeus pushed a plan to spend up to $25 million expanding two CIA gyms, until colleagues convinced him the austere budget environment made such a proposal deeply unwise.
Petraeus also had a rocky relationship with the congressional oversight committees, particularly senior staffers who resented what they viewed as an imperious style and compared him unfavorably to his predecessor, Panetta.
But members of those committees rushed to support him Friday.
“Petraeus gave the agency leadership, stature, prestige and credibility both at home and abroad,” Sen. Dianne Feinstein, who chairs the Senate Intelligence Committee, said in a statement. “On a personal level, I found his command of intelligence issues second to none. … I wish President Obama had not accepted this resignation, but I understand and respect the decision.”
Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., ranking member on the Armed Services Committee, said Petraeus “will stand in the ranks of America’s greatest military heroes. His inspirational leadership and his genius were directly responsible — after years of failure — for the success of the surge in Iraq. … Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.”
Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security, said he regrets Petraeus’ resignation. “General Petraeus is one of America’s most outstanding and distinguished military leaders and a true American patriot,” King said in a statement.

  1. Nov. 1, Iran fires on a drone and we do not hear about it for over a week, they say the reason was that it was a classified mission (read CIA). Today, General Petraeus, CIA Director, resigns due to an extra-marital affair. Petraeus was scheduled to testify on the Benghazi mess and the disinformation surrounding it….geesh..strange times…just coincidence, I am sure of that
I have not seen this kind of coincidence since the Nixon administration…

    1. I can only think of three reasons why he would resign. Its either 1) your right 2) he enjoyed Zumba classes in Maine 3) he had an affair with another high ranking offical.

    2. The FBI discovered his affair when they were investigating a security breach of his email account.
I expect you would prefer a good conspiracy theory, however.

    3. Petraeus was having an affair with his biographer, Paula Broadwell.  She sent harassing emails to another woman who complained; the FBI investigated because of Broadwell’s connection to Petraeus.  The FBI discovered the affair.
On election night, the FBI told Obama.  Either Obama asked Petraeus to resign, or Petraeus offered to resign.  Either way, it was about the FBI discovering the affair.
Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, and an affair is just an affair.

        1. What kind of real information does anyone else on here have beyond stupid and wild conspiracy theories? Good attempt at criticizing me for the exact thing that everyone else on here is doing. At least I’m not being serious about it.

        1. I think we already got the real story.
You sound so angry and cynical.  Why can’t you believe that Petraeus is telling the truth?  If he is lying, then he is hurting his own wife in order to lie about something else.  That makes no sense.
Consider this:  He made a mistake.  He became involved in an extramarital affair, just as he said.  He has spent all his life holding himself and his subordinates to a very high standard.  He now realizes that he failed to live up to his own high standards.
CIA agents who have affairs can possibly be blackmailed by the adversaries of our nation — if Petraeus would fire a CIA agent over something like this, he knows the the only honorable thing for himself is to resign.  He is an honorable man who lost his head over a woman, and now he has come to his senses, and knows that he has to resign.
The president, by offering both the general and his wife his prayers,  but not alluding to the affair, said the right thing.

          1.  Sounds like a good cover story.
            But:
Just between you and me, people really don’t care about affairs anymore or what happens in whose bedroom.  I don’t, do you?

          2. You said “people really don’t care about affairs anymore or what happens in whose bedroom”. You’re going to say that with a straight face?

          3. You may not care who Petraeus sleeps with.  But his wife cares.  So the head of the CIA made himself vulnerable to blackmail, and then did the honorable thing and resigned.
Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

          4.  That is not true. That is 50’s thinking. Would you say the same if he
were gay? Maybe he wouldn’t want to come out. Does this mean secretly
            gay people shouldn’t hold office?

          5. Go have an affair, and when your wife dumps you tell her “That’s just ’50s thinking!”  See if that works for you.

          6. Petraeus’s biographer Paula Broadwell sent harassing emails to another woman; that woman complained; the FBI investigated and discovered that Petraeus was having an affair with Broadwell.
The FBI notified President Obama on election night.  Security threat or not, that’s when Petraeus decided to resign.
I’m sure you would have preferred it to be something about the faux scandal that Fox is trying to create about Benghazi, but sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, and an affair is just an affair.

          7. We stopped worrying about affairs after Clinton. I suspect it has more to do with the perceived CIA mess-ups and his relationship with the Prez.  Remember all the “betray us” claims a while ago?

          8. You may not care what Pres. Clinton or Gen. Petraeus does, but their wives care.  Mrs. Petraeus doesn’t want to be betrayed.  So if the head of the CIA has a secret from his wife, he is vulnerable to blackmail, and that is bad for the security of the nation.  It’s as simple as that.  That’s why he had to resign.

          9. That is not true. That is 50’s thinking. Would you say the same if he were gay? Maybe he wouldn’t want to come out. Does this mean secretly gay people shouldn’t hold office?

          10. Why are you obsessed with gays?  What does that have to do with anything at all?

Gay or straight, no one likes to be betrayed by their husband or wife.
You say “that’s 50s thinking.”  Go sneaking around your wife’s back in another woman’s bedroom, and see if your wife likes it.  I’ll bet she wouldn’t say, “Oh, getting angry about my husband sc&#@ing another woman — that would be ’50s thinking.  I’m happy he betrayed me.”
I’ll bet Mrs. Petraeus wasn’t happy at all about being betrayed.

If you think women don’t mind being betrayed by their husbands, you shouldn’t get married.

          11.  I am not obsessed at all. You are with the notion that somehow because he had an affair he might be blackmailed. I think that’s 50’s crap.

, “he is vulnerable to blackmail, and that is bad for the security of the
nation.  It’s as simple as that.  That’s why he had to resign.”

          12. Cheese, if I had an affair (which I would never do) my wife would be furious, and our marriage would be over.
You say that’s ’50s thinking.  Well, go have an affair, and when your wife dumps you tell her, “But that’s just ’50s thinking!” and see how that works for you.
If you think that objecting to your spouse having an affair is just ’50s thinking, you shouldn’t ever get married.
An affair would put his marriage in danger — so yes, it would make him vulnerable to blackmail.

Anyway, I learned more today.  He was having an affair with the woman who was writing his biography.  They had been working together on a book, she is very attractive, and they started having an affair.
For some reason, she decided to hack into his email account.  Maybe she thought she would get more good information for her book.
The FBI discovered that the email of the CIA director had been hacked.  The FBI investigated, and discovered the affair.  So Petraeus resigned because of the FBI’s discovery of his affair.  He got caught by the FBI.
At least, that appears to be the latest on this.

          13. Gay power couples in the Military or government?  You bet… I knew a few, much intrigue, much secrecy. Being closeted really develops one’s skills at hiding all kinds of ‘secrets’, and remember there have been a lot of gay spies….Britain once exclusively hired gay agents and the Soviet Union would ‘turn’ gay officials….Google ‘gay spies’ and open your eyes to the real way intelligence agencies work..

          14. The head of the CIA would certainly admit to a lousy affair before he’d sell out.
His betrayal in no way rises to what John Edwards’ wife went through. THAT was way beyond the General’s transgression.

          15. It turns out that the FBI discovered Petraeus’s affair.
You and I probably share the same low opinion of Edwards, by the way. Edwards is a lying jerk.

          16. Ya. The FBI was monitoring his Emails for whatever reason, but he ‘fessed up immediately. No chance of any blackmail. No excuses from me but as an older guy myself, a powerful man traveling the world with her and 37 years of marriage under his belt, I can easily see how this could happen. We don’t live in a perfect world. Just ask Maria Shriver.

          17. CNN says she was sending harassing emails to another woman, and the woman complained; the FBI investigated, and discovered Petraeus’s affair.
The FBI notified Obama on election night.

          18. I think you like conspiracy theories, as long as they involve Democrats (the president particularly) or people who work for a Democratic president (such as Gen. Petraeus).
If it is a cover story, why would he invent a cover story that goes out of its way to hurt his wife?
Consider the possibility that he is a career soldier and an honorable man.
As for what people do in their bedroom, if I was doing something in another woman’s bedroom, my wife would be concerned.
It doesn’t matter what you think about General Petraeus’ love life.  It matters what Mrs. Petreaus thinks.  He could be blackmailed, a position that a CIA officer shouldn’t put himself in.
If he was having an extramarital affair, he should hold himself to the same high standard that he holds his subordinates to.

          19. This wasn’t a weekend ZUMBA lesson, but they actually lived together in Afghanistan. A lot of classified information can be ‘accidently’ shared.

Now a secret. The CIA prefers to hire brilliant analysts with a serious flaw in their past or present, so when it comes time to dump them for whatever reason, including taking a fall for some high official, they use it.

Can you honestly tell me that the CIA wasn’t fully aware of this affair? Remember the relationship Nixon had with Hoover at the FBI who had a dossier on everyone and they used it to control people. This is the way D.C. works and the scary thought is maybe Augusta does too.

          20. Mrs. Petraeus has been the wife of the “good soldier” for 37 years. She knows how it works for men like her husband. You are right, Petraeus is a very honorable man. He will do his duty for his commander. He always has and always will. There is much more to this story then a man having an affair.

          21. The woman he was having the affair with hacked his email account.  The FBI discovered that the email of the head of the CIA had been hacked, and that’s what brought the affair to the attention of the FBI.  At that point Petraeus’s secret was out, and he resigned.

          22.  Isn’t it great we know all the facts so quickly from DC and we all know how fast DC is in getting info to the public when one of their own get in a mess.

          23. ……the president by offering both the general and his wife his prayers……sure, on a rug facing Mecca.

          24. Really?
Every other sitting president in recent memory, and I go back to Truman, within three weeks of taking the oath, had picked a church to attend on a regular basis, if not every Sunday.
What church has BarryO picked? And what church has he regularly attended since taking office?
            Answer: None
            Why: He’s Muslim

          25. Abraham Lincoln never joined any church.  He said that he was looking for a church that had the Golden Rule as its only creed, but never found that church.
Ronald Reagan didn’t go to church when he was in the White House, but occasionally preachers came to the White House to visit him.  Same with President Obama.
Our Constitution says that there shall be no religious test for holding office under the United States Constitution.  So if he was a Mulsim or an atheist, that would be fine with our Founding Fathers who said that there shall be no religious test.  But, in fact, Obama is a practicing Christian.
Find a new conspiracy theory, please.  This one is old, sad, and worn out.

          26. But was national security compromised?  Pillow Politic’s are a major factor in Augusta and certainly the same hold’s true in D.C.

          27. The woman he was having the affair with (she was writing his biography) hacked into his email.  The FBI discovered that the email account of the head of the CIA had been hacked — certainly a security problem.  Petraeus’s secret affair was discovered by the FBI.

  2. General Petraeus couldn’t resign before Election Day because it may have cast doubt about Obama’s judgement.

Why should the general resign?  We just learned in Maine “What business is it of anybody’s what TWO CONSENTING ADULTS DO IN THE BEDROOM.”    Thank you, General Clapper,  for praising General Petraeus’  “sacrifice”…was a virgin sacrificed?

    1. You may not care what Gen. Petraeus does in another woman’s bedroom, but his wife cares.  Mrs. Petraeus doesn’t want to be betrayed.  So if the head of the CIA has a secret from his wife, he is vulnerable to blackmail, and that is bad for the security of the nation.  It’s as simple as that.  That’s why he had to resign.

As for “what we just learned in Maine” you seem to be confusing marriage with sex.  Marriage is about mutual love, caring, and commitment, for better for worse, in sickness and in health.
An extramarital affair is about sex and betrayal.
Marriage, and extramarital affairs, are not the same thing.

On another page today you confused marriage with paying for sex.  If you can’t tell the difference, you shouldn’t get married.

  3. Headcount reduction announced at CIA mere days after Obummer gets reelected! Big surprise! Expect 10% unemployment by Christmas! Gas at $8 a gallon in 2013!

    lol

  4. Hellllloooooo !!!
You sleepy sheep aint seen nuthin’ yet.
Things are just getting warmed up.
I didnt vote for you know who.

    1.  No, I don’t know who you didn’t vote for.  The Easter Bunny?
Actually, I don’t care who you didn’t vote for.

  5. I wish we were being told the real story.  There’s no way this guy is stepping down because he cheated on his wife.  There’s much more to this.

    1.  He’s being the good soldier. Taking the bullet for his commander.  Benghazi and four dead Americans, this is not over.

      1. As much as I love all good conspiracy stories, this is probably the truth. No one (as high as Petraeus) in their right mind would tell the world he had an affair to cover up for Obama. We lost so it’s time to move on. I didn’t vote for Obama, but I will support him.

        1.   No one (as high as Petraeus) in their right mind would tell the world he had an affair to cover up for Obama. As stated…the good soldier.

          1. A good soldier who resigned because he left the CIA vulnerable to blackmail over his affair.  He would not tolerate a subordinate in the CIA who had an affair, and as an honest man, had to resign out of honor.

        2.  It’s not – more of the story is now coming out.  Looks like he gave her access to confidential information, or so the FBI thinks.

      2. He’s being a good soldier by doing the honorable thing — he had an affair, thus betraying his wife.  That left him open to blackmail, and he’s the head of the CIA.  He wouldn’t tolerate this in any of his subordinates.  So being a good soldier and an honorable man, he did what he knew he had to do.  He resigned.  Simple as that.
You are too ready to believe conspiracy theories.  Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

        1. Benghazi is the real issue here. You statement could be true  but don’t leave out Benghazi, heads will roll on that one.

          1. You are in the Obama hate/conspiracy theory mode today aren’t you.. What’s in it for you $$$$$
See, I can say something equally dumb as what you said.

  6. And George P. Bush just signed election papers in Fort Worth, Texas…

this is seriously ‘news’ to people….what do you expect, it’s about as predictable as a major huricane hitting the coast of New York every thirty years or so, it’s just how it is

  7. Bunch of crap. He is going in front of the congress next weak and now he can proclaim Exec, privalige.. Him and obama did some dity work in libia by giving weapons to the terriost along with stinger missils and when Stevens tried to get them back they raided the cia compond killing Stevens all the while Obama was watching via camera on the drones.. Heck both could be brought up on some hard charges against america.

  8. Doesn’t it seem strange, that the whole story came out with all the facts in less then twenty four hours? NOTHING happens in Washington in twenty four hours.

  9. I believe we will find out the full story of Benghazi, the drone that was fired on and the border agent that was killed with the weapons WE shipped to Mexico etc etc because…well….by golly…this is the MOST transparent administration in the history of the universe!  The president  said that himself and surely….he isn’t a liar right?  Yes I know…you won….I’ll say it before you do….

  10. Bush made a good decision when he chose Petraeus to lead in Iraq.  Of course the libs all hated him.  But then Obama endorsed him and they all loved him.

    1. Your presumption to know something about others’ thoughts and allegiances shows an ignorance typical of many reactionaries. Stupid comment.

        1. I’m saying such generalities are pretty silly. By all accounts he was a level-headed, honorable soldier. Media accounts both positive and negative, from left or right, seldom take the true measure of such figures and following the media’s lead more often than not lead people astray in both directions. I don’t trust blanket statements about what liberals think, especially as opinions in liberals in general are all over the map. I always thought of him as someone doing his job, a very difficult, unenviable one. I didn’t agree with the war, but those that illegally got thrust into it… the men and women following orders… have had to bear the brunt of the lies and oil agenda of the neo-cons that manipulated the country into war. He did what he could to protect those people, at least from where I have been sitting.

    2. Gen Petreus  was talked about for the 2016 presidential race.

Gen Petreus was drinking when he was interviewed by Rolling Stone magazine and talked out of school. Google is your friend.

Odd that he was kicked out of his military post to the CIA. Aren’t they supposed to keep a secret?

The mistress has lived in 60 countries and speaks Arabic. Think maybe the CIA took care of him in their own way before he had to testify next week over Benghazi?

      1. You say, “Gen Petreus was drinking when he was interviewed by Rolling Stone magazine and talked out of school.”  Wrong general.  That was General Stanley McChrystal.
The woman he (Petraeus) had the affair with hacked his email account. The FBI discovered that the email of the head of the CIA had been hacked. The FBI told Petraeus that they had discovered his affair, and that his security had been breached by his girlfriend. He had to resign.

  11. I find it sort of odd that CIA blacksites, torture, illegal rendition, kidnappings, extrajudicial killings, assassinations don’t elicit the same shame as… having a lover. I’ll bet there’s more to this than being reported. There almost always is.

  12. Doesn’t pass the stink test, anymore than a youtube video causing attacks on embassy. Another magic bullet.

  13. A late night reading of military blogs reveals Washington’s worse kept secret is ‘out’. Some are even crediting P’s success with his ‘close’ relationship with his ‘biographer’, esp. while embedded(sic) in Afghanistan.

A picture of his wife show’s the real victim….ah, the military lifestyle.

The coincidences are maddening…quits a few days before testimony, g.f. works for Eliz. Warren, etc. No wonder Hollywood loves the Obama regime so much; plenty of stories to put on the big screen…plenty of Navy Seals and Delta Force agents to debrief…..can’t wait for Angus to clean up D.C. politic’s. :))
