SULLIVAN, Maine — A local woman was arrested Tuesday after her child allegedly brought pot brownies to school and distributed them to students.

An unidentified student brought marijuana — police confirmed it was in brownie form — to Mountain View Elementary School in Sullivan on Tuesday, according to a statement from RSU 24 Superintendent Suzanne Lukas.

Lukas said that after the school interviewed students, several were suspended in connection with the marijuana brownies, and that their parents had been notified. Lukas declined to offer any more information.

Police concluded the treats belonged to the brownie-bearing student’s mother, Amanda L. Hiser, 32, of Sullivan, according to Corey Bagley, supervisory special agent for the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency.

Hiser was charged with aggravated trafficking of a scheduled drug and possession of a hypodermic device, according to Hancock County Jail records. Information about how the hypodermic device charge came up was unavailable Wednesday. She was released Tuesday evening on $500 unsecured bail.

State police brought a drug-sniffing canine to the school and found no other drugs on campus, Lukas said.

“The school does its part to investigate on our end of things, and now we’ve handed it over to the state police,” Lukas said in a Wednesday interview.

  1. Why ain’t those darn techers teacnin ma kids nothing!  Mission control, I think we’ve found the problem.

  2. Mom’s still asleep so I’ll get ready to go to school.  Oh great! Mom made brownies.  I’ll take them to share w/my friends.  (Hope someone else brings the milk.)  This should get me a gold helper’s star.  Thanks Mom!

    1. When my niece was in the second grade she removed one of mommy’s toys from the clothes bureau and took it to school for show and tell.  Apparently she thought it was something it wasn’t.  True story.

        1. “Next up, little Darla. Darla, what do you have to show to the class?” Walking up to the front of the class, she proudly sits the device on a table, next to a large bowl, for all to see and says “IT’S MY MOMMY’S COOKIE MIXER!!! ” She demonstrates by turning it on and mixing a bowl of powder and water, while dumping several cups of chocolate chips into the batter. All the children were estatic and couldn’t wait to have chocolate chip cookies. The teacher, meanwhile, had fainted…

        1. I asked my brother for a brief description, a name perhaps, of the “device” but curiously he wasn’t very forthcoming with the details.  He kind of went back and forth from pink in the face to laughing hysterically.  Finally he tried to get the story out but couldn’t get beyond the first word or two.  It sort of came out minus the verbs, if you can imagine someone stuttering through their laughter while telling the story.  If I understood him right I believe the teacher called mom at home and requested she come in to pick it up.  Gosh I’d have loved to be a fly on the wall for that meeting. We opened a couple of beers and just laughed and laughed so hard I was almost crying.

  3. Nothin’ says lovin’ like pot brownies in the oven….another “Mother of the Year” candidate.

  4. Wrong batch of brownies, son!  So, just curious, how was it discovered that they were pot brownies to begin with?  Kids ate some and got enthused and interested in school?  All started laughing and goofing on the teacher because she looked like Shrek?  LOL

      1. Teacher tacked up a big map of South America and the kids started saying things like, “Oh, wow, man!”  “Dude, check out all those colors!”  “I’m hung-up on Chile, I’m hung-up on Chile!”  “Lets have burritos!!!”

    1. I am guessing the child knew just what they were and told the other kids–that’s why more than that one child was suspended, they ate them knowing what they were.

      1.  I noticed that part of the story right away. So then I read the story two more times looking for some mention of the age or grade involved. Anyway, I tend to doubt they were first or second grade students.

          1. I figured maybe it’s a K-8 but if it’s one of those areas that has a junior high school it would be a K-6 school. The worst thing we did in junior high was bringing oranges that were injected with vodka to lunch. I guess it was easier to get a hypodermic syringe than weed back then.

          2. I got a lot of my “guidance” from cousins who were 4 to 8 years older than me. The funny thing about the orange trick is kids had been doing it for a few years in that school and the teachers hadn’t figured it out. They were checking book bags and lockers. They were looking in trash cans for an empty bottle. That was because there were a few kids who were a bit tipsy after lunch but they wouldn’t snitch.

    1. I don’t wonder at all.  I think kids have always had a hard time growing up for a bazillion different reasons.

  5. Well, there is a clear parenting failure here, though it’s not the one most people here have probably bird-dogged on.  The child plainly was not taught, or at least did not learn, the First Law: Stay out of Mommy’s stash.

  6. “Pot users show drop in IQ from adolescence to adulthood”
    –CNN,FOX

—one may suppose second hand POT smoke may harm children too.

        1. Now contrast this to a persistent use of alcohol from age 13 to 36. I’m sure there will be similar consequences.

        2. That is only an abstract, not a full text article. I would be more interested in knowing how much of a drop. They measured users from age 13 to age 38, at which point neuropsychological decline was noted in persistent, daily users of cannabis. If you were to look at CT and/or MRI scans of persons who used alcohol on a daily basis, you would likely see similar cognitive disruption.

          1. Yep, and we won’t even go into the neurological disorder that is most forms of religion.

Boy, Id like to see some science and some numbers reflecting how terribly ignorant religion makes people.

And tom thinks weed is bad for young minds…

        3. The study is focused on an age group who’s brains are not yet fully developed. Of course if you smoke weed during those years it can be problematic. But its not because it chemically makes you  stupid, but because pot makes being bored okay. If young people spend their time stoned instead of learning or acquiring a new skill of course they are going to be less intelligent.

Its worth noting that the federal government controls all studies done in this country on marijuana and most other drugs. They have been saying for years and years that it causes cancer, but they have never produced a single specimen as proof. Not one. If they had proof, they’d be parading it around on high.

Kids shouldnt take or use any substances that effect their thought processes, period.

There is no evidence that Marijuana use lowers IQ or damages brain cells in healthy adults. If it somehow were dangerous and had the capability to chemically make people dumber, it would not simply effect undeveloped minds.

Fact is, people have been using marijuana since there have been people. The human race has a come a long way, I think we’d both agree. Millions and millions of people smoke. If it were that bad, our planet would be in a whole lot worse of a place, right now.

          Relax. Its a plant.

And, if you are really concerned about the mental well-being of children, perhaps you should consider the damage that religion does to developing minds.

    1. My understanding is that an adolescent’s brain isn’t even fully developed until they reach their mid-20s, so if they’re using pot (and/or other drugs) regularly before that, who knows what the far-reaching effects might be.

  7. This is something that could happen in a Cheech and Chong movie. I hope they weren’t made out of Maui-wowie and Labrador.

    1. This is good sh**, what is it, man?

      It’s Labrador.

      Labrador?

Yeah, man. My dog ate my stash and I had to follow it around with a baggie for 2 days.

      *puff puff*

        1. I’ve been told, we’re only as old as the woman (or man) we feel. Unfortunate for me, my wife is older than I am.

I laugh when I hear young’uns telling how much they laughed when they saw a Cheech and Chong movie for the first time.  Man oh man. I remember waiting for those movies to come out on HBO when cable television was first introduced to us back in the late ’70’s to early ’80’s. Remember those days? We had to get out of our chair to change the channel or turn the volume up or down. Before cable we had to go outside to turn the antenna so we could get one of the 4 networks that were available. We even had telephones with short cords on the handset and a rotary dial. Boy, those were some tough times!

          1. My Mom and her mom both worked at the local telephone company exchange. I can remember back to when phones did not have dials.

We used to pick up the phone and wait for Mom’s voice, or hang up and try again. By then someone would realize where the hangups originated and tell Mom we were on the phone.

Our local exchange went from Ocean 6, to Viking 6, (846) when the dial phone came out. Later, I became the 3rd generation of telephone operators in my family, along with an older sister.

          2. Thank you for sharing. I love hearing stories like that from the people who lived them.

As far back as I can remember, we used to punch in 4 numbers to dial within town. My grandparents phone number was 3518. A few years later we had to add one more number to identify what town we were calling from, which was 6-3518.

I also remember party lines, where if you had to use the phone, you’d pick it up and listen to make sure a neighbor wasn’t on their phone, and if they were, we’d have to wait until they were done talking and then could make a call, while keeping in mind that any of our neighbors could listen in on our calls and we could listen in on theirs.

Sometimes I wonder, are we really moving ahead using new technology, or are we slipping backwards. I can’t remember the last time I wrote a letter and mailed it to somebody.

  8. Lets hurry up and get those  charter schools up and running.

The charter schools will have the students learning the 3Rs, graduating with high SAT scores,as well as the charter schools can keep our kids away from the bad elements and their parents   The pro POT parent’s kids can have the public schools; learning multiculturalism as they rub elbows with the growing diversity in the state.

    1. Don’t you think that there are going to be pot smoking parents of kids in charter schools? I know so pretty “upstanding” people that smoke weed and they function quite well in society and their children have grown up and become successful as well. That’s discrimination…

        1. My father never did drugs nor POT, nor drank alcohol
As an adult, i dont do POT nor drink [after college, maybe one can of beer every 7 years]
My now adult kids grew up in Skowhegan of all places, never drank alcohol,no POT. They graduated a four year college. Both live out of state, One is in vet school, one has a career and has never seen a day of unemployment.  THEIR kids will not do POT nor drink booze

how come every one of you adult pot lovers, have kids and/or adult kids that smoke POT and likely went on to do harder drugs.

          1. I didn’t say that I was a pot lover – all I was stating was that is was discrimanitory of you to say that there won’t be any “pot loving” adults or children within the charter school system. What about these kids that were put on ritalin and went on to harder drugs because they are so used to being medicated to deal with their supposed ADHD? Many of these kids nowadays do not need to be on this drug and are put on it because teachers can’t handle an active child and would rather have the kids medicated and zombified. I know of some pretty respectable people that smoke pot because of illness, insomnia and anxiety. I respect your opinion on this matter but, not all people that smoke or injest pot are low lifes.

          2. Mainstream POT smoking, other drugs, and drinking booze at a younger age began in the 1960s.  Their kids and their kids  are the ones that have been coming down with mental, emotional, and psychical disorders for the past 30 years.

There is a drug that does what POT does, without the ‘high’. But what fun is that? How is one going to qualify for government begging  handouts with that drug.

Of all the medical marijuana users in Maine right now, there are hundreds, not one has gone back to working. How good can   medical marijuana be? if it cant get a user back to working?

          3. Medical POT  patients, they can hunt ,ride atvs ride snow mobiles, ride motorcycles, they can run home gardens, they can hold house parties,   ……they are just too sickly to  WORK.

Quadriplegics work, but nope,. not the medical potheads.

          4. Most of the medical cannabis patients that I have met are too ill to work, but I have met some who are only able to work because of medical marijuana. I don’t know too many quadriplegics who work.

          5. If you are talking about Marinol, it does not work for most patients. It is expensive and only makes most patients want to sleep.

          6.  Have you read the list of side effects for Marinol?

Kinda seems like whatd happen if I smoked a joint.

Has the high taken out. Right.

Why are they trying to make marijuana into medicine, if it isnt?

Ive resolved to completely ignore skowresident. Seriously one of the most hopeless people I have ever met. Bigoted and ignorant to the core.

“Not a single person on medical dope in the state works.”
“drinking booze began in the 60’s”
“every pot user goes on to do heroin”
            “pot makes people dumb”

            etc etc etc ad nauseum

          7. You know for a FACT that not ONE person who resides in Maine and is a medical marijuana patient has employment? seriously? How could you even claim that and expect anyone to take you seriously? Wow.

Guess what? I DO KNOW PATIENTS WHO WORK! HA!

          8.  so true, here is a short list of the …lo life’s…lol
Bill Clinton – president, rhodes scholar at oxford, pimp-daddy

Barack Obama – our next president, Harvard law grad

            All Four Beatles

            Led Zeppelin

            Miles Davis

Actually, pretty much any musician whose music you’ve ever liked… probably smoked it

Carl Sagan – noted atheist and science writer

George Washington – founding father, smoker, grower, gay – what a man!

    2. Sorry, Skowhegan, charter schools are open to the public, including students who’s parents may smoke (or eat) pot.

  9. 500 bail, no wonder this crap continues. Hey DHS, wake up and take this child from her…………what a wonderful mother she is, NOT

  10. What if..
Mom was a legal medicinal marijuana?  Would she be arrested if the child took the brownies without her knowledge?  Are parents of children who steal pills and take them to school arrested?  Don’t know the particulars in this case but just wondering.

    1. If she did not place her “prescription medication” in a place where her child couldn’t get at it, it could be child endangerment.

      1. or NOT, remember the Brooklyn Foss-Greenaway case. That kid gave meds to two babies and her mother is not being charged. The outcomes in both of those cases was far worse than what has been reported here.

        1. Soemthing makes me think there might be more than we know about that case.  Hold tight, we’ll see.

    2. If it was her medication, she should keep it in a safe place, especially if it is in the form of a yummy treat.  So, yes. Child neglect/endangerment.

  11. Think  back you POT smokers. Who was the  first ‘friend’ or ‘friends’  that offered you POT?  You smoked it because of peer pressure.  Today your a POT smoker and an advocate of legalizing POT.   Not because you believe in POT being harmless and good. but because on that first day that friend or friends offered you POT for the first time, your brainwashing to believe in POT began.

Now that your life is lost and devoted  to POT, think of your kids  that have or about to meet that first ‘friend or friends’ that will offer them POT and start your kid to being brainwashed to being a POT smoker and lover.

Home Depot and Walmart will not even hire your kid  to clean the customers toilets if they come out positive on a POT drug test.

    1. That’s not always the case. You obviously have your opinion – which you are free to have. But perhaps you should be a little more open minded and do your research. Not EVERYONE started smoking Marijuana due to peer pressure, or at an adolescent age. It is common, I will give you that. However – there ARE many positive effects that it can give with much less side effects than other prescribed medications, and in some cases works better than an alternative man-made chemical. I have a few friends who are medical patients, and do not abuse their medication. They need it. It helps them feel better and live their everyday life pain free, or with much less pain. And they are not “stoners” – they are fully-functioning, tax-paying, child-supporting members of society. It reallys bothers me when people do not get all of the facts before having such strong opinions.

On a side note, I do agree that this mom should be in trouble. It does not state whether or not she is a legal patient…. But IF she is/was, then she should be held accountable, because she left it in a place where a non-patient (her child) could get to it. It’s irresponsible.

    2. Also, If you have a prescription, I am pretty sure they cannot deny you employment. That is like saying that someone who is prescribed anxiety meds or pain killers due to a chronic illness can’t be hired because it would show up in a drug test……. Just saying ;)

  12.  I know some kids in Charter schools through my granddaughter….Charter
kids…NOT …..hellions at times, just like in any  school!!!  some of these kids  are privileged, but normal!!  !It’s
called growing  up !!! Some chose to smoke weed, and others don”t,
school had absolutely nothing to do with their drug choices begin…

    1. I know something about Charter schools.  The penalty for a student screwing up and or their parents, its back to the public schools they go.

      1.  Harsh penalty for screwing up at a charter school :
        going back to public school.
Glad I got my daughter into a private school.
It made all the difference in her outlook and outcome.
She smoked pot as a teenager but gave it up as she acquired more responsibility.

  13. Since students were suspended over this incident, I’ll guess the kid who brought the brownies knew about mom’s secret ingredient.  We look to parents to educate their kids about the dangers of drugs. It’s sad how many parents think the worst danger is getting busted.

  14. Having read many of the comments associated with this article, I am struck by just how ingrained the “Ghetto Mentality” has become in Downeast Maine. The same permissiveness and lack of standards that exist in the inner cities of this country, combined with large entitlement handouts from both the State and Federal Government, is turning Maine society into a Ghetto culture. All the elements are there: The Enabler (State & Federal handouts), the Apologists… friends and family who characterized bad behavior as “that’s just how they are – they are ok”. The lack of standards and expectations! It seems little is taken serious, and many worrisome stories or trends are either  mocked or dismissed out of hand. Kids pick up on this sort of attitude… and then we wonder why they become troubled later in life and they themselves become depenent on the State.

    1. Booze and POT are the gods of Maine.
That statement is not being hyperbolic, just look at the report last month, the people in this state go to church the least.

      1.   going to the organized  church makes you a much better citizen  huh? …NOT I personally don”t approve of the molestation !!That I think, makes me the better person!!

    2.  I could have a party correcting your punctuation and grammar; however seeing that I am a party to the Ghetto..I will refrain!  You are Harvard educated…right!  NOT

  15. Has it been determined whether this was ‘medical marijuana’ which was taken to school?
…If so, it raises all kinds of issues about securing it; mom’s stoned, she won’t care….hmmmm.

I wonder what the impact on the kids who were also on daily doses of ADHD/ADD medications issued by the school nurse? Chemo is used in many rural schools to control behavior and estimates range up to half the students!.

    1. ADHD,ADD,ADO, and all the dis orders, the parents want to blame the chemicals in the ground and in the foods and in plastic and what the government gave out, but the chemicals  they smoked or drank? how dare someone blame the disorders on those chemicals.

  16. You have to ask now, considering the obesity problem in America, if they were Low-Fat pot brownies, cause they seem to have taken most of the goodies out of school.
