DEXTER, Maine — Two men were summoned earlier this week after a bullet landed within feet of a woman sitting in her house, according to police.

Dexter police were called to a residence on Garland Road at 1:55 p.m. Sunday after the homeowner said a bullet entered her house, said Dexter Police Chief Kevin Wintle on Friday.

“The bullet went through several walls and landed in the living room, where she was sitting,” said Wintle. “It missed her by an estimated three feet.”

During their investigation, police Officers Louis Durgin and Jeremy Wintle visited a camp on Chickadee Lane, Wintle said.

“They located two male subjects. They admitted to shooting multiple shots for target practice,” said Wintle, adding that the men were shooting in the direction of Garland Road.

Multiple guns, including a .44-magnum rifle, were confiscated.

Cory A. Ouellette, 33, of Orono and Christopher Dempsey, 24, of Topsham were both summoned for reckless conduct with a firearm, a Class C felony.

Both are scheduled to appear in Penobscot County Superior Court in Bangor on Nov. 15.

  1. That’s a populated area and it’s simply ignorant not knowing where your bullet is headed and how far it can travel.

  2. Okay, you two fellas over here, back of the line.  Now, again, lesson number one in target shooting — NO HOUSES behind the targets.  Got that?  Sure now?

      1. Figure of speech.  In this case, “multiple guns, including a .44-magnum [sic] rifle,” for certain values of “we”. :)

(In the general case, it’s shorthand for something like, “It’s chucklenuts incidents like this that get Polite Society down on everybody who likes to shoot, including, quite unfairly, those of us who know better than to do so toward people’s houses.  These guys need a beating for letting down the side.”)

  3. Give some people a few trees and they think they are in the middle of the woods with no houses or people around. Before you shoot know your surrounding.”idiots”

  4. Yep, I love to shoot too, but one of the most basic rules is knowing that you’ve got a good backstop and what is behind the backstop incase you miss the backstop.
    Both are idiots.
But, not to excuse them, the old Maine tradition of going to the gravel pit to shoot is becoming harder and harder to enjoy. Jerks who use the gravel pit as a dump, or worse yet, shoot up the owners equipment have made us look bad. Can’t blame the owners to gate the pits that were once left open.
But no excuse for the guys who launched a bullet into somebody’s house.
