WASHINGTON, Maine — Two people were arrested Wednesday night and more people may face charges after a police response to an area known for rowdy behavior.
Knox County Sheriff’s Office deputies, who responded to a 10:20 p.m. report of suspicious activity, found approximately 11 people outside a residence on the Crystal Lake Road, according to Chief Deputy Tim Carroll.
When the deputies arrived at the location, three people ran into the woods, Carroll said in a news release issued Thursday.
Due to prior problems and arrests in this area, the deputies asked for and received assistance from other agencies, Carroll said. A Maine State Police trooper, officers from the Camden, Rockport and Waldoboro police departments and deputies from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office responded, including one deputy with a canine, to assist in locating the people who ran into the woods.
The chief deputy said there have been recent calls to the area involving disorderly conduct and large-scale fights that have necessitated calling in backup from other departments. One call had ended in four arrests for obstructing government administration and disorderly conduct.
After a brief search Wednesday night, Frank Maddocks, 41, of Appleton was located by the K-9 team and arrested on a warrant for failure to pay fines. The other two people who ran off were not located Wednesday night.
Police also arrested one of those gathered outside the residence who did not run away. Felicia Glidden, 19, of Washington was charged with violating a condition of release on a previous unspecified charge that required she not consume alcohol.
Pending further investigation, the chief deputy said more charges may be brought against others involved in Wednesday night’s gathering.
Why did it come to that? Effective law enforcement should have nipped it in the bud before it got to be a problem. Oops, sorry, I forgot, you have got an inept sheriff and the chief deputy certainly is not a bevy of experience.
Wrong the family who lives there is the biggest problem. The police can only arrest if a crime has been commited. These folks get arrested everytime and most are on probation. The local joke is the family tree has one branch.
Mr. Betts, I want to thank you for your investigative reporting on this story. I read this news from another newspaper, but they were not at all thorough in their telling and left it up to my imagination what these people were arrested for and what the complaints were that brought the police to this area.
I do believe The Courier Gazette lost a good reporter when you left. Sadly, I find more local mid-coastal news from The Bangor Daily Newspaper than I do from our local news source.
