ORONO, Maine — A sold-out performance of “The Price is Right — Live!” set for Wednesday night at the Collins Center for the Arts was canceled 15 minutes before its scheduled start time.
A flyer that University of Maine police officers were asked to post cited “unforeseen production circumstances.”
“A lot of pieces have to fall into place to get a show like this on the stage,” Adele Adkins, associate director for the CCA, said Thursday morning. “There was a production issue at 5 [p.m.], and by 6:20 it was clear it couldn’t be fixed. We had to make the decision to cancel at that point.”
Adkins said more information may be available later in the day.
UMaine police said that the show was sold out. The Collins Center has a seating capacity of nearly 1,500, according to a campus information sheet.
According to the flyer, refunds were made available Wednesday night for credit card holders and can be obtained at the ticket office or by calling 581-1755 between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday.
Cash and check purchases will be refunded automatically by mail.
“We are sincerely sorry for this inconvenience,” it concluded.
Among the thousands who bought tickets in hopes of taking in the live version of one of the nation’s most popular game shows was Althea Huntley of Bangor, who went with two of her friends.
“I’m so disappointed,” she said, adding that she has been watching “The Price is Right” — now in its 40th year — since it first aired. She said she shelled out $48 for her ticket.
Huntley said the three learned the show was canceled at about 6:45 p.m. from a woman they believe is an employee of the center. She said that some of the people who were leaving obviously had been seated already.
“Some of them were wearing their name tags,” she said.
“It’s a real mystery,” Huntley said. “It’s just so odd that it wasn’t officially announced. I think it probably won’t be back,” she said of the show, which is in the midst of a nationwide tour.
BDN writer Emily Burnham contributed to this report.

I was the one to get the last floor seat tickets and the 1st one to find out it was cancelled!! I also was the one that yelled outside that it was cancelled but not a single soul paid heed!! its too bad tho, I was pretty stoked to go this and it was such a major dissppointment and it definitely coulda be handled a bit better. The Price Is Right should come back at another date! ;)
This is ridiculous
Its a extremely longs story why this was cancelled, hopefully someone will let these people know why.
Well come on man! Give us the story!
Did it have anything to do with audio? I took a walk to the load in area and noticed a lack of audio equipment/crew. I also noticed only one semi truck and I think a production that big would require atleast 2.
Why did you expect to see audio equipment in the loading bay. Ideally it is much more useful in the theatre. Have you ever seen the inside of those trucks? They really pack them efficiently. And considering you didn’t actually see the show, how would you know how much stuff they needed to bring anyways?
So why? I’m dying to know!
someone on facebook posted that it was the maine state gaming commission.
That wouldn’t surprise me.
Well the man that used to run the gaming commission is now a LT in Orono and was assigned to TPIR detail. Geeee, I wonder.
But Orono cops are always so laid back and logical!!!
*cough*
I think it’s foolish to criticize spelling and grammar on the sight but many people can’t seem to help themselves. Sinced you brought up a spelling error on a post, I couldn’t help myself from pointing out your grammatical errors. We all make mistakes. Just sayin.
You are right we are not all that good spellers, but the commenter below us corrects on a daily basis and its gets annoying after so long . That is not what the comment section is for, but Bangor daily does not care.
Flier, not flyer.
“Flyer” can be used for either a leaflet or someone/something that flys. “Flier” is pretty much restricted to something that takes wing. As the 60’s DJ put it, “Hey, kid, what school you went?”
Not in Associated Press style.
AP also said up until last year that website should be “Web site” … I’d take what they say with a grain of salt.
Is this a battle of anal retentiveness?
I never heard that phrase before but I love it!Thanks for the laugh. And why were police officers putting up the flyers rather than the people responsible for the show?
Additionally, it’s “canceled,” not “cancelled.”
What happened to the copy desk?
It can be spelled either way according to the dictionary.
“Cancelled” is archaic. Plus, Associated Press style, which this newspaper follows, requires “canceled.”
crapola or crapoli
LOL!!
judgemental
Also archaic.
I know. (giggle)
Incorrect. Either way is acceptable.
Just as there are professional standards for traffic control devices on our roads, there are professional standards for journalists. Associated Press style is that standard. It is designed to make reading as effortless as possible by using consistent rules for spelling, grammar, punctuation, abbreviations, and usage. Deviations from these standards are often jarring and interrupt the flow of writing and reading.
I here they are looking a for a new journalist. Apply within, you seem to complain way to much about spelling
The copy desk edits/corrects/amends legitimate news information and stories produced by legitimate journalists, and bloggers and columnists that the paper has hired or subscribed to. No one edits any of the blathering that goes on in the readers’ comments section. In fact, the more awkward the sentence structure and the more misspelled words that appear provide a clear insight into who is actually posting here. Readers’ Comments was created as a forum for intelligent give and take on an issue. It has deteriorated into a place for gossip, innuendo, unsupported accusations and just plain ridiculousness – all posted anonymously.
While I do not disagree with your analysis of Readers’ Comments, ryanrobbins is actually referring to the posted article which was produced by a legitimate journalist, blogger, or columnist presumably hired by the paper.
sincerely,

Thank you Sharon for posting this. Its been out of hand lately with spelling issues
It’s
Thank you
You are welcome.
I am curious as to why this was cancelled I hope it comes out!
We were disappointed that the show did not take place. No one was allowed into the seating area and we were still in line, in the building, to sign up to be a contestant. If this is the worst thing that happens to me today, then I call myself grateful. I hope the show will make it back to Maine.
(If they did know a long time before hand, that the show would be cancelled, they should have shared that informaiton as soon as they knew – not 15 minutes before the show would start)
Before RyanRobbins gets to you its information not informaition
Meaningless typo…
to most yes
You certainly have a healthy attitude after being so shabbily treated as a potential contestant. What a cluster! Sorry this happened to you.
Did everyone dress up in costumes like they do on the tv show?
thats lets Make A Deal!! lmao!!
A lot of people made special shirts to wear. Some of them were very creative and cute!!
Got to love live television, especially in an area they are not familiar with.
This isn’t the TPIR TV show, but their TPIR Live touring show. They have a TPIR show (or had) in Las Vegas for years. To bad it got cancelled, and fairly strange it was cancelled 15 minutes before show time.
I honestly did not understand this statement from the Collincs Center Web-site – did you need a ticket or not??
NO PURCHASE NECESSARY TO PLAY…
REGISTER AT THE BOX OFFICE TONIGHT FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE SELECTED AS A CONTESTANT. CONTESTANTS WILL BE SELECTED IN A RANDOM DRAWING. OPEN TO US LEGAL RESIDENT, 18 YEARS AND OLDER. TICKET PURCHASE WILL NOT INCREASE YOUR CHANCES OF BEING SELECTED TO PLAY.
A TICKET IS REQUIRED TO ENTER THE THEATER TO WATCH THE SHOW.
If I were a betting man, and I am, I would say the reason this show was cancelled is summed up in the statement above. With all of Maine’s do good/hand holding/nanny laws, it was probably impossible for the show to be run in the manner which it was intended. I would guess that the production staff was negotiating up to the last minute with Maine’s lovely bureaucrats and they lost. This just comes down to a common sense issue. Is one Price is Right Live show in the area going to cause significant harm to gambling establishments or residents? If the answer is no (and it was), the show should happen. We need a return to common sense, not heavy handed government interference.
I was at the site most of the day where this was to be held. They were setting up and getting all ready. All i will say is someone said they were gambling illegally at Umo. Not sure who called but someone did. They will return soon.
The show will not return. It was announced to the folks inside(in line for registration) that the show was canceled due to Production Issues & involving a laywer on the West Coast. It seems the gambling laws idea could hold truth….
Yes they were told that, but it will return eventually, when no one knows. Its gonna be a while, But you are on the right track to what happened. You are a great detective
Hope it will return. The wife and I were excited. Movies, Bowling, etc gets boring in Maine
You don’t just discover you have “production issues” 15 minutes before the doors open. My barnyard biscuits meter was set off the minute I read this story.
Production is defined as the time the contract is signed to the time all payments are made and the show is back on the road to another venue. That includes more technical and non-technical aspects than you could imagine so yes, sometimes things do come up 15 minutes before show. Even if it was a technical issue… Sometimes there are unforeseen mechanical or electrical failures with set pieces that happen 15 minutes to go or a performer gets ill. That is all included in the production. If you don’t know what you’re talking about, you probably shouldn’t bother commenting.
Curious to know what you were doing at the site all day. Do you work there?
Very close to that site i had to take a client out that way, so yes. I do not work for them, but i work on my own and work with adults with disabilities
One would think that with all the advertising they did and being there setting up and whatnot you would think they would of had this settled with the state. The news is saying right now that there was technical difficulties with equipment and the show will not be rescheduled. Now if that is the reason just equipment issues why not reschedule?? Dont make sense!
Because I would say the technical difficulties were a limitation of the Collin Center for the Arts not an issue with the show.
It’s not always that easy to just reschedule. The tour probably had another venue to get to.
That is exactly what it did come down to – the fine print. There is another article on the BDN – sad!!
STRANGE
I lost my ticket after the debacle and can’t get a refund. This will be the last collins center thing I will attend. And seriously – screw you Price is Right
UMPD and local PD swarmed the collins center. I heard someone scream some toiletries
So you’re not going back to the CCA because you lost your ticket?
How were you planning on getting in?
I had the ticket when I went in when I left I either dropped it or threw it away
So how is that anyone else’s fault other than your own? You made the decision to pay an outrageous amount of money for a ticket, then you made the decision to not pay attention to where your ticket was…but screw the Collins Center/Show? Stop being so 47%.
why don’t chu go to zumba and screw yourself…i have the ticket on my computer so now will be calling them.
If all those johns went to Zumba to screw themselves…they wouldn’t be in such a pickle _now would they_ ?
How do you lose a ticket?
I threw it away when I got pissed off
Then why complain about losing your ticket?
What does the Collins Center have to do with your lost ticket?
At $48 a ticket, maybe the price was wrong! lol.
LOL
$48 for the chance to win something!?!? If I had $48 extra I could think of a LOT better places to put it to good use!
Must be Lepage’s daughter’s fault.
(someone had to).
Reviews on the web indicate that this show relies heavily on video clips of the real show, and video clips of prizes. Based on what they say, it doesn’t sound like the people with tickets missed much – a few t-shirt prizes and the ‘big’ prize was a weekend in Vegas at one of the grosser hotels.
Can anyone tell me why, if the Collins Center has a capacity of nearly 1500, there were thousands of tickets sold? Sounds like despite the technical difficulties that caused the cancelation, (just heard that on the tv), many ticket holders weren’t going to see the show.
The reason for the show being cancelled was really due to the fact that the Price Is Right models were at my house doing some pretty serious Zumba-thon and thus couldn’t make it to the show.
Hahahahahaha!!!!!!
Not really, The reason was they did not grease the right palms to continue. Gambling in this state requires the right greasing and right contacts.
That is a really really old picture of Drew! He is half that size now.
No one had been seated. I arrived around 5:45, they were forming a line for Registration. We were given name tags in line. They did announce to the folks inside (in line for registration) that the show had been canceled. An older gentleman mentioned Production Issues & a laywer on the West coast…..
I went to a taping of TPIR in L.A. 3 years ago. It’s free. What fun. Drew is wicked personable. They confiscated everyone’s phones. If you’re ever out there, go see it.
And a good time was NOT had by all.
In other news the Collins Center for the arts can seat nearly 1,500 people!
Maybe Drew had a few to many toddies and couldn’t do the show!!
Did they receive some nice parting gifts?
I wonder if they received any nice parting gifts?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7YrIj4I7ecg
(price is right losing horn) lolol!!
some nice silverware? a year’s supply of steaks? anything?
THEY HAD TO CANCEL because the model scheduled to perform on this Price is Right show was advised at the last minute it would be in poor taste if she came…….Alexis Wright
it would be false advertising as the Price Would NOT be right
Rumor has it that Drew got some bad moose teriyaki from Wing Wah.
This was just posted on the Collins Center for The Arts facebook page –
The official reason The Price is Right cancelled last night:
Around 5:30pm yesterday, the show’s legal counsel called because they did not feel that the “no purchase necessary” aspect of the event was adequately conveyed to the public. We tried until the very last minute to come to an agreement but ultimately both parties decided the show had to be cancelled. Our most sincere apology for the cancellation. Today, our #1 concern is getting people’s money refunded as soon as possible. As of now, over half of the refunds have been issued.
Consider yourself luckly the show was canceled. I went to “The Price is Right” shown in Clearwater Fl @ 4 weeks ago with my Mom. It was a rip off, they were charging @ $55.00-$65.00 a ticket. The most that was given away was $350.00. The showcase was a trip for 2 on a cruise and a new car. The catch was that the two people bidding had to be within $100 of the showcase without going over to win. Needless to say nobody won and people started booing…. The Ruth Eckert Hall holds about 2100 people. Do the Math… They made a lot of $$$
