There are a couple of bible toters on the science commitee in Congress that have some power. Rep. Paul Broun (R) and that other genious Akin are members in good standing. Because it’s not based in reality. No one is trying to turn northern Maine into a nature preserve. I have quite a bit of land up here and I use it how I like — it’s how I make my money. 

And what’s productive about an exaggeration that isn’t based in reality?

I too appreciate your insight and apparent love for the environment.  I don’t often have time to read the comment section of BDN but always perk up when I see Spruce Dweller.  RQ has every right to do with her land what she wants.   I am grateful that she is trying to preserve the land for future generations.  She does not have to do this!    If her neighbors would make nice I’m sure she’d permit hunting, fishing, camping and so on.   I’d much rather have her ‘in charge’ of this portion of our wonderful State than LePage and his short sighted cronies and the like. 

I too appreciate your insight and apparent love for the collective. My job harvesting fossil fuels keeps me very busy but your enthusiasm for socialism always perks me up. And when I think of RQ and her plans for a forest free of humans, I’m giddy with misanthropy.

Why do you think they have so many devastating wildfires out west? You need to cut the wood to prevent them. I would think you would see the connection. They do not hurt the land at all, they are improving it if anything. Maine has more tree growth than we know what to do with. Do you think we just started cutting the trees within the past 20 years? no, they have been doing it long before you were alive. It is a necessity for alternative fuel, paper and lumber. Have you ever tried wiping your butt with plastic, writing on plastic, or building a house with it?? It is a great industry that we have.

Funny how right wingers love to pontificate about “personal responsibility,” and yet you constantly blame all your problems you caused on liberals.

Bear hunting?  Luring bears to a pile of donuts and pizza for weeks so out of state people can bag their trophy is not hunting.  We should call it what it is – bear baiting.      

Northern Maine hasn’t always been a “working” forest, not until white folks showed up, that is, and when they did they managed to clear a great deal of it for taters and hay and buy up the rest for logging, which in the early days was as much mining as it was scientific forestry, something they resisted (scientific knowledge, that is) and many do to this day.
As for the “feds,” Mainers might owe them a little, since it was the “feds” who negotiated and ratified the Webster-Ashburton Treaty which cleared the way (no pun intended) for legal exploitation of the woods by Mainers.
Tradition? For better or worse, traditions, like records and myths, are usually broken to become “traditions” themselves, right? Crosscut saws, wet feet, clammy outhouses, beans, poor pay and lice were part of those of those same traditions. Didn’t take long to drop them when better fare came along. Like the national forests in NH and VT, Boundary Waters in MN, the Adirondack Park, a Maine Woods national forest or park, if established, would most likely become another traditional use of part of the Maine Woods. Who’s to say it wouldn’t?

If being a nature preserve involves being pickled, one might surmise from many posts in these hallowed columns that Appalachia North is well on the way!

 government jobs are paid for by the taxes of private jobs.  you wont have much of a government if you destroy all the private sector jobs.

You can’t pay yourself into prosperity Spruce…  The government has to receive taxes from outside of itself in order to have money.  Building a road with tax money, is still SPENDING TAX MONEY.  It doesn’t matter that 15% or 20% of that money comes back in, in the form or payroll taxes from the company that received TAX money to do the job.  It’s recycled money, not new tax revenue.  I’m not sure how else to say this in a more basic manner.

Those bonds we are selling abroad -many to the Chinese who make stuff for “American” corporations who shipped their manufacturing there – are keeping us afloat, so we can buy even more stuff from them, because that’s we do best – consume disposable stuff! In fact, we are no longer a nation of citizens, we are a nation of consumers – that’s our great passion, perhaps our only truly world class talent – which will be a source of amazement to future archaeologists (if there are any educated curious  people left to take up the profession) who paw over the landfills and other detritus left in the wake of the late American empire and wonder whether we were ever a responsible people, or just what it was that ailed us.

I am getting tired over the “argument” that the President has no power over oil prices. He certainly does. Every time he makes a move in the middle east he sets off some price surge. Every time he blocks a pipeline somewhere he sets a price surge.  Every time he shuts down production in the Guff its sets off a price surge. All a president has to do is open his mouth it effects oil prices. This President could send prices down if he likes. All he need do is open his mouth in the right direction.
