Trucker who admitted to border agents to possessing child pornography pleads guilty

BANGOR, Maine — A Florida trucker pleaded guilty Monday in U.S. District Court to possession of child pornography.

Douglas Danford, 40, of Port St. Lucie, Fla., admitted in late 2009 to officials at the Houlton Port of Entry that he had child pornography on his computer, according to the prosecution version of events to which he pleaded guilty.

He is being held without bail pending sentencing.

A sentencing date has not been set.

On Dec. 14, 2009, Danford was traveling from Canada toward Portland, according to court documents. While at the Houlton border crossing, Danford admitted that he had pictures of underage girls on his laptop computer and that he knew it was illegal to have them.

More than 600 still and video images were found on the laptop. Those images include photos of two minor boys engaged in oral sex, according to the prosecution version of events. A video depicts two girls, one about 11 or 12, and the other about 4, fondling each other.

Danford charged with the crime in January and pleaded not guilty in March. The Florida man was free on bail until he entered his plea Monday.

Information in court documents does not explain how the subject of child pornography came up with Danford at the border, or if he was suspected of possessing it.

He faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. After serving his sentence, Danford will have to register as a sex offender.
