BUCKSPORT, Maine — A train carrying paper products damaged Route 15 on Sunday when it overturned.

The derailment occurred shortly after noon, according to Dan Saunders of the Bucksport Police Department. There were no injuries, he said.

The train was about three miles north of the Verso Paper Company mill when it derailed at the crossing at Route 15. One car overturned and a few others may have derailed, the dispatcher said.

The Maine Department of Transportation was called to inspect the damaged road, which has been closed to traffic, but had not arrived as of 2:30 p.m. Traffic was being rerouted.

This was the second derailment in Bucksport in a little more than two months. Four cars on a 31-car train derailed May 25 near the Bucksport/Orrington town line. Two of the cars tumbled down the embankment and into the Penobscot River.

  1. They’ve had two more derailments in the last six months  on the Bucksport end of the line that they simply don’t tell anyone about.   If you ask them, they will simply ignore you.

  2. Trains are a danger to people and highways. Lets ban all rail systems, today.
They run right through mother nature,  thats where I think I’ll get my support

    1. let’s just keep cutting taxes, so our roads don’t get taken care of. Oh wait that already happened.

      1.  Agreed. U.S. infrastructure is crumbling. Bridges, tracks, roads, air-corridor radar systems . . . all of this requires investment, which has to come from taxes.

We’re moving in the wrong direction.

        1. Blame the Tea Party Republicans for no infrastructure. They vote down every infrastructure bill. They don’t believe in Government. Just chaos and destruction of America.

          1. LOL!!
Knightcross, Democratics want the government to pay for everything. Lets just take Obama Care. in 2 years is will cost the working class 18.5% of their income. They claim that is down from the 22% on the original estmate.

Do you borrow money to mow your lawn?

          2. Flip Romney started Obama Care in Massachusetts years ago in case your memory has failed you.

          3. I thought it was the Democrats who keep increasing welfare expenditures. Lets take all the waster dollars in the welfare system and improve our infrastructure. How about putting the welfare recipents to work re-building the infrastructure to re-pay their food stamps. That said, I’m only referring to those welfare recipents that are able to work, elderly, mentally retarded, and veterans aside.

          4.  I’m a liberal, and that sound good to me, how about we also stop screaming there’s no money. While we are at it, let’s get those in Washington to get their fingers out of their azzes, do some work, and start taking care of this country.

          5. PS, I’ve just moved back to the Ellsworth area, after 11 years in Dexter, I can tell you this, I rarely see the EBC being used here, more the 1/2 the people in line at the store, used them in Dexter, and Dover. So what does that tell you, it tells me that the more liberal areas are, better off, so more liberals are working.

          6. First liberal I”ve met with a brain! You give Liberals someone to look up to. Really there isn’t anymore money. We spent it all. I’m not sure about your household, but in mine when you have to borrow to meet obligations the money is gone. I cut back my spending. Lets get off the foreign oil so we don’t have to fight wars over oil. Let us cut out the foreign countires. Biuld our own “stuff”. Stop giving tax breaks for business to go over seas. I agree lets get the politicains off their butts. If the public doesn’t like em fire them. Donald Trump style.

    2. Are you really that ignorant? Lets increase truck traffic over the road. Wait better ban all roads, they run right through mother nature! We won’t need roadsor rail because all the houses and businesses are built rigt in the middle of mother nature! Greenie LIberals are a danger to people.

    3. Humans are a danger to other humans, let us ban them while we are at it. Given the rate of vehicle acidents over train accidents I would say cars are a bigger threat to people then trains!

    1.  Nope its a  Pan am Springfield Urinal Me Guilford Rail Maine Central track. Tim Mellen needs to put money into this company or sell it

      1. Maybe he will if Governor LePage can wrangle some corporate welfare to subsidize maintenance.

        1. I think LePage should use everyone on Welfare to rebuild Pan Am’s track!! It would be a first class railroad.

  3. This Farce is what Maine Railroading has become. Derailments over 5MPH. All Maine Freight Rail should be condemned and closed down permanently for the SAFETY of the Public. Funny the Clowns on this Blog want East West Rail to compete with the Private E W Canadian Expressway pushed by Cianbro. Both the Expressway and the E W Rail will never happen. It would take Billions of Dollars to revamp all the Rail in Maine. This will never happen, since the only freight in Maine left, are Welfare Checks and EBT Cards. Verso is ignorant shipping by rail when thier products are mostly damaged and destroyed when they ship by train. The only people that win here are the Lawyers. I am amazed that any insurance company will insure a load of product for the Railroad or Verso.

    1.  There already is an East-West line. It runs from New Brunswick through Maine to Quebec. Has been in operations for decades. Used to be the Canadian Pacific then MMA bought the track rights.

  4. So how many more derailments at even these low low speeds will it take before the state steps in and demands that the owners of these deteriorating rail lines repair and rebuild? Or are the tax payers going to be stuck taking over the abandoned lines again?

    1. The state has no authority to demand anything. The railroads answer to the Federal Railroad Administration. The state can make demands until they’re blue in the face but it means nothing unless it comes from the FRA.

      1. Then I would think that we could bring this to the attention of the FRA through our Representatives. You are correct that the Governor seems to have burned his bridges in Washington.

        1. Blame the governor! At the federal rail level they care little for the Governor’s agenda or his mouth.

      2. Yes you are right the state has no say same thing is happening in  Fairfield they have real bad crossing an they even have signs posted to tell drivers that the crossing are real bad

      3. Actaully MDOT employs an inividual who oversees railroad safety. That person has as much ability as the feds.

  5. Pan Am has derailments every week all over the state.  Poor track maintenance is to blame!

    1. Do you know it was related to track conditions and not an issue on one of the cars?  I know Pan-Am has a poor track maintenance plan.
