AUGUSTA, Maine — A citizens’ activist group is calling for Charlie Summers to resign as Maine secretary of state, saying his serving poses a conflict of interest while he is running for U.S. Senate.
The secretary of state’s office administers Maine elections, and the Maine People’s Alliance says Summers should resign because of a conflict in overseeing his own election. Alliance Executive Director Jesse Graham says Summers should also resign because of his past action sending letters to college students about requirements for registering and voting.
A spokeswoman for Summers says he has turned over all elections oversight to a deputy secretary of state.
None of the six Maine secretaries of state or attorneys general who have run for higher office in the past 30 years resigned.

What a foolish request from the “People’s Alliance”…..every one who is currently elected or appointed and running for election or re-election could be accused of some kind of conflict of interest…..it appears Mr. Summers has handled the situation appropriately….time to move on to important issues…..
Being in charge of elections isn’t a conflict? Please! That’s sort of like being State Treasurer (one of his primary opponent’s) and continue to do what the Attorney General (another primary opponent) tells him not to do. But in the end……I guess they all have determined that they are untouchable.
Oversees the election process and is running in an election. MPVA is pointing out the obvious but in this race Summers apparently is going to need every possible advantage his position affords.
Instead of resigning, Summers should instead be given additional staff to police the hundreds of illegal voters he has been obsessed with since he took office as Sec. of State. Maybe he can find evidence of illegality against both Angus King and Cynthia Dill and knock them both off the ballot.
“Maine People’s Alliance Wants. . .” just about sums up everything the MPA stands for. They never offer anything of their own, just “want” more from those who go out and work hard everyday.
It seems like what they want is what the people want!
They went out and “Worked Hard” as you would put it getting signatures to repeal the Voter Suppression law !
It worked!
Charlie Go Away!
We dont want no stinkin puppet!
New Deputy Secretary of State now overseeing elections….wait for it…..Charlie Webster.
I would like the Maine Peoples Alliance to resign. But since you won’t, the very least you could do is to stay off my porch!!!
I was just saying that the next time one of the Commiekids with Clipboards from the MPA shows up on my front porch, I’d like to have them arrested for trespassing.
Of *course* none of the officials running for other office want to give up their posts. Those who seek power rarely want to give it up. That’s against their nature.
Summers should resign. Not only does that avoid a conflict of interest (real or imagined or both) but it puts service to the people of Maine above his own political aspirations (i.e. Maine deserves a fully dedicated Secretary of State), and it also shows that Summers can prioritize. He looks unconfident that he can win attempting to do both, it’s also poor time management which we don’t want in a US Senator. Finally, how does he expect to defeat King with his energies divided. I am undecided in this race, but my advice to him would be, show more confidence Charlie!
How many fraudulent voters are we up to now? Two?
