NORTHPORT, Maine — A man who was recently released from prison after being convicted of stabbing a romantic rival has been arrested again on domestic violence-related charges.
Stephen Cummings, 24, of Northport is accused of assaulting a woman who is either his girlfriend or his ex-girlfriend, according to Lt. Jason Trundy of the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office.
The alleged incident occurred last Thursday, Trundy said Wednesday. The woman went to seek treatment for her injuries at the PenBay emergency room in Rockport, and medical staff reported the matter to police.
She told Deputy Arthur Smith that the two had been arguing early that morning over whether she was seeing someone else, and that Cummings then began to choke and punch her.
Police arrested him later that day at his Atlantic Highway home, charging him with terrorizing and domestic violence assault.
Cummings was taken to Waldo County Jail in Belfast to be booked and remains in police custody at Two Bridges Regional Jail, with his bail set at $750 cash.
According to Trundy, Cummings had not been out of prison all that long after serving a sentence for a 2007 attack that happened in Searsport.
Previous BDN reports stated that Cummings had forced his way into a former girlfriend’s Searsport home by pushing in a fan in a first floor window of her apartment complex.
He encountered a man in the apartment and stabbed him in the back. The victim had to be transferred to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor for treatment of his wound.
Cummings was found guilty in Waldo County Superior Court of burglary, aggravated criminal trespass, elevated aggravated assault and other charges, and was sentenced to five years in state custody for the crimes, according to a court clerk.
He must love jail.

Such a small bail- such a short sentence for what seems to be a very violent man,,,,,will the justice system ever learn? I have seen the ads on TV about zero tolerance for domestic violence- it seems the police are doing their part…..but the whole thing falls through once it hits the courts…..this is so wrong.
What a brave man. Stab someone in the back, and woman beater. If the convicts were worth their salt, they would fix this guys attitude, seeing’s how the law won’t.
He appears to like assaulting the defenseless.
Glad he doesn’t have a child around him to beat up.
This guy won’t learn. Life without parole.
Just judging by appearance alone, using the word “romantic” in any sentence related to him seems to be a stretch.
