BOSTON — So you think blue lobsters are rare? The New England Aquarium is holding a lobster that’s way rarer than that.
The aquarium in Boston says it has a calico lobster that could be a 1-in-30 million lobster.
The lobster is dark with bright orange and yellow spots. It was caught off Winter Harbor, Maine and is being held at the New England Aquarium for the Biomes Marine Biology Center, a science center in Rhode Island.
Aquarium spokesman Tony Lacasse says calico lobsters are quite rare.
The Maine-based Lobster Conservancy says perhaps one lobster in 1 million is blue, while both the orange and calico versions might be as rare as 1 in 30 million.

Interesting that it was living in the River, just downstream from the Holtra Chem site.
Edit: the initial story reported the capture was in Winterport. Dang …was hoping they were really moving here.
That’s funny… now imagine if it had been given time to grow up. Make a fine 50’s era movie.
why not say who cought this? they should get credit for it!
My thoughts exactly. The person who caught this should have been given his or her share of the credit.
We catch a few a year, I saw one that was cooked a few years back and the meat was colored shaded in a similar way.
haha so their rare because no one reports them being cought! lol
Pretty much, They are odd but not so much that we would ever think to call anyone about them. I think we caught 2 last year that looked like a money cat, a few others that were not so defined.
That’s a little odd that this was caught in Winterport? Maybe those spots altered its sense of direction. I have never heard of catching lobsters in the Penobscot. My question is who caught this and were they fishing for lobster at the time or just happened to catch this while fishing for something else? I didn’t know there where any lobstermen that fished the Penobscot as far up as Winterport?
Is the article right? Does anyone know if lobster travel up the river that far. I have never heard of this.
Did they mean Winter Harbor? I am not sure I have ever seen a lobster trap above The Narrows
Or as they are known in Maine, a “money lobster.”
In Maine it is a “lobstah” Get it right!
COME ON……..Winter Harbor or Winterport?????? For those who wrote the story, these are two different places……………….and there are no lobster traps set near Winterport. Closest would be south off Verona Island. Sure it wasn’t Old Town instead? ; )
They have the correction for Winter Harbor and yet the photo caption still says “Winterport.”
What color butter do I use?
Hmmm maybe all that fluoridation is making an impact? Or could it be the run off from Blaine House?
I forget, are calicoes always female…
Maybe they really meant Westport and it was caught off the former cooling pond for old Maine Yankee. :)
You know, there are some weird lobsters out there, this one in particular, I can’t imagine getting this at Red Lobster, Red Lobster would change its name to orange spotted lobster, hahaha, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Zy23pvkobU
