Veazie council appoints school district withdrawal committee members

By Nick McCrea, BDN Staff

VEAZIE, Maine — The Town Council appointed members to the town’s RSU 26 withdrawal committee during Monday night’s meeting. That group, along with Glenburn’s withdrawal committee, will sit down with the school district board on Wednesday to decide how to go forward with the secession process.

The Veazie committee that started the petition drive to begin the withdrawal efforts nominated Rob Tomilson to represent them on the new committee.

The council voted to appoint Councilor Tammy Olson to the committee to represent the town.

Janine Raquet, a Veazie resident of five years who has a child in Veazie Community School, was picked to serve on the committee as a member of the public.

They’ll be joined by a fourth member, school board member Chris Dalton, who the board nominated as the Veazie representative.

The group from Veazie — along with a committee formed last week in Glenburn —

will attend a school board meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Orono High School cafeteria.

During that meeting, a chairman will be selected for each withdrawal committee and the school board will discuss how it wants to move forward with withdrawal talks and negotiations.

In other business at Monday’s meeting, the council received recommendations from the budget committee, which councilors will review before they hold a budget workshop at 6 p.m. Monday, April 30, in the town office.

A public hearing on the budget is scheduled for the next regular council meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, May 7, in the council chambers.
