AUGUSTA, Maine — Gov. Paul LePage has signed into law a bill that will allow state workers to store concealed weapons in their locked vehicles while at work.

The bill was signed Tuesday, but will not take effect until 90 days after the close of this year’s legislative session.

The new law will extend to state workers the same rights that a law passed last year gives workers who are employed by private companies.

Supporters of the new law say it affirms their 2nd Amendment right to bear arms.

  1. And when another Fred Wintle gets elected or hired by the state, he won’t have very far to go to get that gun now, will he.
This is just asking for trouble, especially with those hot-headed, unstable tea partiers around.

    1. There are people that abuse the right to free speach as well.

However, that is no reason to deny everyone else  the right!

    2. Yes, exactly, because someone with the mindset to kill someone will be deterred by a law saying they can’t have a gun in their car.  Grow up and come into the real world.

  2. The right to arm and protect one’s self,,  unbelieveable… 40 years of breaking down the peoples rights and now this.  giving rights back to the people.. I suppose the next thing is that we will be allowed to buy clean Diesel cars that get 55 miles per gallon in Maine and not have to go to NH to buy them.

  3. It’s scary enough going to the DMV, now we need to worry about someone going postal and getting shot.

  4. Why outside. We (especially concealed carry holders) should be allowed to keep and bear anytime, anywhere. Anything less abridges our second amendment rights.

      1.  why? instead of just posting an immature and childish comment why don’t you contribute to this discourse? I agree with unconditioner law abiding citizens should have the right to protect themselves so long as they are not doing in a fashion that compromises the safety of others. I work in a fairly populated/croweded office and even though I am well trained marksman there would have to be an extreme situation for me to use my weapon. However, workplace violence does happen, there have been office shootings, their have been plenty of shootings in government buildings. With welfare reforms and government job cuts coming I think its logical there will be a bigger pool of disgruntled people who might take the dive off the deep end and try and do harm to others.

I would like to think that my skills could potentially stifle a tragedy and that the risk involved in firing in an office would be outweighed by the potential to save lives.

When it is all our nothing you or them you will be happy when a mild mannered coworker runs to their glove box and grab a .38 to stop it.

        1. Unconditioner never used the words “have the right to protect themselves.” He said they have the right to keep and bear arms. That’s what the Constitution says and what the Supreme Court has upheld.

  5. I was under the impression that lapudge is going to spend some time trying to get some new jobs in Maine, I guess nanny laws are his priority.

  6. How does this compute? “During the search, in the glove box was a loaded 9 millimeter [handgun],” Ewing said. “Because of the concealed weapon, the driver was arrested based on the investigation that she was in control of the vehicle.”

  7. I have been to the Rockland career center many times, and just the thought of this one man that works there packing heat, intimidates to the point where the next time I visit there I will be lugging my unloaded shotgun with a few shells in my pocket, if they dont like it they can call the ACLU and we will see who is right. Or Sane.

  8. I hope he means if they have a concealed weapons permit or get one. Not all state workers are y stable.  Sorry I do not believe in special rights for some.

  9. Oh, just what we need!! More gun-toting yahoos who can’t leave their homes without  packing…what the hell is wrong with this crowd?
