MOUNT DESERT, Maine — Hancock County police are investigating what caused a single-vehicle crash that killed a local woman Saturday afternoon on Mount Desert Island.

The woman, whose name was not released by police Saturday night, was driving on Route 102 in the town of Mount Desert just before 2 p.m. when her vehicle apparently went off the side of the road and up an embankment.

The vehicle then went airborne and appears to have rolled over several times, Sgt. Kevin Edgecomb with the Mount Desert Police Department said Saturday night. Edgecomb said police still were trying to determine what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway as driving conditions were fine in that area at the time.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. That section of Route 102, which is south of Echo Lake, was closed for roughly three hours while officers attempted to reconstruct the accident with the help of a Hancock County sheriff’s deputy.

No other information was available Saturday night.

  3. So hard to believe, I saw you just Wednesday night.  You will forever be loved, and never forgotten. Sending lots of love to everyone affected by this tragedy.

  4. My thoughts and prayers to those affected by this loss.

I hope the person who went around the alternate route behind me after this accident and passed me going twice the speed limit sees this and thinks twice about road safety. We were sent around a tragic accident- no sense trying to pass me going 2x the posted speed to get somewhere faster.
