PORTLAND, Maine — Investigators have been analyzing blood found in the basement of a Maine home where a missing toddler was last seen six weeks ago, an official said Saturday.
The blood was found early in the investigation into Ayla Reynolds’ disappearance from her father’s home in Waterville, state police spokesman Stephen McCausland said. The state crime laboratory has been running tests on it since then, but it was unclear when results would be available.
Ayla’s father, Justin DiPietro, reported her missing Dec. 17. He had put her to bed the night before and said she wasn’t there the next morning.
McCausland called the discovery of the blood “troubling.” He declined to discuss how much blood was found in the basement or how long it might have been there.
Ayla was 20 months old when she disappeared. She had been staying with her father at the time in the house where DiPietro lives with his mother. Her mother, Trista Reynolds, lives in Portland.
DiPietro told police she was wearing green pajamas with polka dots and the words “Daddy’s Princess” on them and had a soft cast on her broken left arm.
DiPietro, his mother and a third adult were home the night of Dec. 16, and police have questioned all three, McCausland said.
“We believe they have not given us the full story,” he said.
Both of Ayla’s parents participated in a vigil Saturday on the City Hall steps in downtown Waterville.
It was the first time the two came face to face since their daughter’s disappearance, said Bob Vear, a friend of the DiPietro family who organized the vigil. They spoke privately for about 10 minutes before giving each other a hug, Vear said.
DiPietro declined to discuss the discovery of the blood.
“I’m not going to answer any questions about it, but I will say this: If there was something there, I don’t think I’d be standing here with you right now,” he told the Morning Sentinel newspaper in Waterville.
A woman who answered DiPietro’s mother’s cellphone hung up after being asked about the blood.
Reynolds could not be reached for comment.
In an interview earlier in the day with the Morning Sentinel, she said she was preparing herself for any outcome.
“As a mother, as a parent, you need to mentally prepare yourself for the good, the bad, the worst,” she told the newspaper. “I have been preparing myself for all of it during the last 40 days. I have told myself anything can happen. I could get the greatest news or I could get the worst news ever.”
The blood was among hundreds of pieces of potential evidence that were removed from their home as part of a criminal investigation into the girl’s disappearance. The discovery of the blood was first reported Saturday by WCVB-TV in Boston.
Ronald Reynolds, who is Trista Reynolds’ father, said DiPietro hasn’t been forthcoming with his version of what happened or what he knows. DiPietro has said he took a polygraph test, but has declined to say what the results were.
“They haven’t given the full story, but this family has gone through so much pain, so much hurt,” said Reynolds, who lives in Portland. “We’re going into two months now and don’t know anything, and all we get is the runaround.”
Vear said he was first made aware of the blood sample Dec. 24, but he doesn’t think it’ll amount to anything.
“I cut myself at home all the time,” he said. “It could be Justin’s, it could be the baby’s. There were five or six people in the house that night.”
You know whoever has her, or whoever knows what happened to this little girl, grow some ***** and just tell everyone!!..enough, is enought!

I agree. Hopefully this is a wakeup call to DHHS. Drug addicts should not be allowed to ‘care’ for their children. If she is found alive, she should be put in the care of a loving family…. not one focused on drugs and publicity.
Especially those known to DHHS to have troubles with Bath Salts, Meth, Cocaine and other hard drugs. As well as those knows to have a violent record. I do not know if Justin’s has a police record or drug and/or alchohol issue. I do believe the police do know and if DHHS placed here there they should’ve known.

Unlike CSI or other crime scene TV shows, it takes time to run the necessary tests to determine whose blood it is, what type of blood it is or even if it is human blood. Not to mention that they are probably running tests on more than one crime at a time.

Maybe they already know whos blood it is. It did take them six weeks to release that they found the blood in the first place. Just because the police arent telling you what you want to hear doesn’t mean they botched it. If you think you can do a better job, join the police force. until then stfu. How do you know it takes 3 days? I’m fairly certain it can take longer. Just because a paternity test takes 3 days, doesn’t mean this will. Really not feeling very optimistic about this poor little girl being found “alive and well.” From the beginning, much of the story has not made sense.
They’re just getting around to an analysis of the blood, or it’s taken this long to do an analysis of the blood? I would’ve thought that they would have expedited the process since the “blood was found in the basement early in the investigation…”
Unlike on shows like CSI it takes time to run tests sometimes even weeks depending on the test and, unlike CSI, the labs have to work on multiple crimes and cannot focus on just one crime at a time.
I’ve never watched CSI; I don’t watch television.

It was probably picked up by the equipment they borrowed from the Mass State Police. That “measurement” looking thing was actually a 360 degree laser camera that records crime scenes, including blood evidence and spatter not visible to the naked eye. The family didn’t have access to the house until it was released back to them…so they did collect all evidence. Testing takes time because most labs have significant back logs.
You would think the blood would be analyzed the moment it was found. And I would think the results would be available pretty quickly. Sounds like a shoddy investigation just ripe to be challenged in court and the perpetrator will get off on a technicality.

In the 6th week of a potential murder/pedophilia case the forensic investigators in charge decides to test the basement floor for blood after watching an episode of CSI the night before.
The Maine voter and taxpayer needs to take back ownership of the Criminal Justice system

It’s more than likely that detectives have uncovered a lot more physical evidence than just blood. However, usually they deter from making public certain aspects of the case, which I’m sure has been piling up over these past six weeks. Whoever is responsible for Ayla’s disappearance will undoubtedly be shaken by this revelation.
To reveal just one clue, that may, or not be related to a tragic event-hopefully not -must have some significance to the investigation. Of course, right now, it’s as much a mystery to me as it is to a lot of people as to what is happening. Meanwhile, rabid critics choose to assail police on the investigation, whilst chewing them out for not having the analysis back from the lab’. There’s a lot they know, but are not quite ready to reveal it.

When judges, prosecutors, or cops fabricate or withhold evidence or testimony to get a conviction, why can’t they be punished. It’s rare but we all know that there are people incarcerated right now that are innocent. If DiPietro did it then his life should and will be over.
Unlike CSI where testing take hours or at the most over night, real life testing takes days and sometimes weeks depending on the type of test and how many other crimes are being investigated.

Reread the second paragraph of the article.
There have actually been guilty defendants released by juries because they thought the tests took to long to complete, unlike the hours it takes on CSI.
Labs have to take the correct amount of time to ensure that the tests are accurate and they also have to follow exacting procedures so that a good defense attorney cannot make the results looks biased or contaminated.

Well the boy lives in the basement, so I doubt he has a workshop down there. And if it were an animal they would know that right away. They can tell human blood from animal quite fast. So, I think it’s safe to assume it’s human and not Justin’s. Beyond that it’s extreme supposition.

CSI isn’t real life. You dont get the results of a blood test in an hour. It can often take 6 weeks to a year. If you want the results faster, pay more taxes.
Sadly, the statistics show, this little girl probably isn’t coming home. If her family is responsible, I hope they bring back stoning. If they are responsible, they have wasted millions of tax dollars covering up their crime.

Blood can be easily tracked. I broke my finger and left blood on a bank door before and they took fingerprints when it got robbed, they thought it was me. I still think the dad did this, i wish he would confess and get it over with. He will only get 20 years

What on earth are you talking about? They didn’t “track” you through your blood, at least not 20 years ago they didn’t. The only way a person can be identified cold with an unknown blood sample at a crime scene is through CODIS, which did not exist 20 years ago. And even today they would have had to have gotten a DNA sample from you at some point before the robbery. So, please say something sensible because none of us knows what you mean.
dkenzie didn’t say it happened 20 years ago. He said he left a bloody fingerprint on the door, and when the bank was robbed less than an hour later, the police focused on the bloody fingerprint they found on the door, assuming it came from the person who actually robbed the bank.

So what does this have to do with this case? What does getting a fingerprint from a blood smear have to do with testing blood? Or are you saying that blood can be tracked as in left behind, etc, not tracked as in DNA tracking from the blood. Just curious, thanks.
its hard to explain, but they can track anyone through blood.
But they have to retrieve a sample of YOUR blood to know that what they found was yours, they cant just take a sample of blood and go “oh that belongs to John Smith that lives at 17 fairytale lane” how would they know, without having something to compare it too?….which also means they would have to get blood samples from both parents to be able to analyze if this blood had the same DNA as them, for it to be Ayla’s!

Surprised they even released that information. Usually, it’s “nothing new to report.” Or, “still under investigation.” Something must be happening.
The blood they claim to have found, could be just one clue of many police already have. Usually they prefer to maintain silence until an arrest is made.
Something has to give, it seems. If the parties closely linked to the investigation didn’t know about the blood, that could come as a shock. Perhaps, that’s what police want.

That’s a tough question. I haven’t yet figured what the police motive is for releasing this. But I have an idea.
By releasing this information, the occupants of that home on the night Alya disappeared, are gong to be very uncomfortable.
The spotlight has been sharply re-focused on them and their unwillingness to co-operate with police. All must be aware that a 20-month-old girl just didn’t get up and leave the house on her own accord. And, as police say, how could anyone break in and kidnap the little girl while her father, grandmother and others, sat in a room close by?
The grandmother told the media: “I didn’t hear nothing.” The next day said “I wasn’t in the house.” She is already distancing herself from the investigation as much as she can.
We can’t just point to one individual, when all of them must be aware of what transpired. I can only guess that Alya was either murdered, or, spirited away to another house not far from her father’s home. Personally, I hope like many others that the latter is true.
There could be numerous reason they released it, the culiprit come forward for less time, or they could just be releasing it to let everyone know. I do hope if its Justin he gets life in Prison

Within a day they knew the blood type and they knew Ayla’s blood type. They knew the amount of blood and they knew Ayla’s body size. They brought in homicide investigators. They weren’t searching for an alive baby. They were searching the river and every other place they could think of that he may have placed a body. Just saying, I knew when Frisk and a few other top names were called in immediately we had a homicide (people who are called in when a homicide exists). Logic spoke that they weren’t searching door to door pretty early on, other then to ask questions, like, what have you seen?
Nancy Grace’s team also were asking questions and doesn’t want her name mud, she was prosecuting him very early on.

They found blood. So what. I have a pool of blood on my deck where I almost sliced my hand of using a skill saw 3 years ago. This finding unless it is hers and it is significant is useless. What a waste on reporting this…

Not really. There are so many variables that have to be taken into consideration before blood findings are relavant. Obviously, the amount considering this is a small child but also any kind of splatter patterns or sprays, type, location, age, transfer blood stains, and whether or not there was an attempt to cover/clean it with bleach, , ect. A single spatter of blood is not enough to determine the area of origin at a crime scene and not every result of BPA will qualify as incontrovertible evidence.
We’ve all cut ourselves at one point or another in our homes. Its how that blood is collected and analyzed with variables listed above that will determine whether or not its useful or admissible.

We don’t live in a world where TV shows are reality! This isn’t Law and Order, CSI, Snapped, or any other crime related TV show where test results, arrests, and conviction happens all in the course of an hour long episode. The complex methods of proper testing takes time. Surely the nature of this investigation puts these particular results at a high priority level, but even then it can take weeks to retrieve that data. For the public to feel privy to these results (or any other findings) before this child is found and/or an indictment is issued is baffling to me. Ayla has weighed heavy on everyones mind. Nothing is more important then finding this poor child. I pray she is found unharmed and the person/s involved held accountable, but we also need to understand that NOTHING is going to be released to the public that could in ANY WAY shape or form jeopardize this investigation. For now, nothing matters except finding this child and if it takes incomplete reports in the BDN then so be it. So long as it keeps this baby and the importance of finding her in the media.. . .

Someone in that house was watching too much in the past about the JonBenet Ramsey case, basement death also. Man, those must have been some good drugs or booze to let 6 people sleep through it. Can’t wait until the guilty party is caught.

Maybe if the mother thought more about her child than herself, Ayla would still be alive. This is a prime example of why DHHS should remove children from the care of drug addicts.
Why would you say such a thing? Alcoholism is a disease — she seeked out professional help to deal with this. She made sure that her child was in the safe hands of her mother and sister before entering treatment. Just because I don’t agree with tearing apart a mother who is living the worst nightmare possible doesn’t make me a bad mother…it seems there’s a lot of people like you out there that like to judge people based on their words. I’ve not read your other posts at this point, but probably the problem is that you suggest waterboarding to get desired information. When this country’s police start torturing citizens to attain its goals, then we’re no better than any totalitarian state. If you were subjected to waterboarding, or any torture, you would tell them whatever they wanted to hear just to get them to stop.

Legal methods and techniques should be applied to attempt to determine information being withheld. If it were my daughter that was missing, I’d want all that could be done to find her.

I so agree with some comments below. I belive God has care of this little baby now, so sad but I guess we all pretty much know by now this is the case. Someone in that house knows what happened to this little angel, there were that many people in that house and no one knows what happened to her. Speak up and tell the truth, let this little baby rest in peace or be found. I wish I could say what I get for a feeling about this whole thing, I have had a vision about this from the time I heard it, I cant shake it and I never will. But in this society, I guess visions of things like that, people think your off your rocker so I have kept it to myself, but its been hard. All I can say is set yourself free to this one male in that house.

What do you base this on? She didn’t have the care of the child at the time. Is she a ninja and was able to sneak into a small house full of adults and children, take the child, spirit her away somewhere and not be seen or heard by anyone? No, the most obvious explanation is surely the right one, especially in this case, and that is someone already in the house did away with the child for a reason, and the reason could quite plausibly be that this person didn’t want to pay child support for the next 16 years. Or, they hurt the child very badly, and were trying to avoid a murder charge. Either way, nothing at all points to the mother or her family doing anything to disappear the baby.
It seems to me that the Maternal Grandmother or her Aunt (Trista’s sister) would have reason to take the baby away from her Father seeing that she wasn’t being taken care of properly and having being kicking and screaming when they gave her to him. I refuse to believe anything else. I just hope she is found soon so that we can see her little angelic smile on TV.

Maine most likely had to send the sample away to be tested, where there is almost certainly dozens of samples already waiting to be tested. These labs get samples from all over the country and that’s what takes so long.

I haven’t read or heard anything at all concerning a Psychic, but I seriously believe someone should look into contacting one! I know for certain cases are solved by Psychics. I’m not sure if anyone remembers a young woman from Conneticut a number of years ago that was cut up, packed up in a box and buried in New Hampshire. A Psychic led authorities to her. I know this for a fact, as she was a first cousin to my X-husband.
I do believe I made a suggestion about a Psychic early on in a prior post. Little tid-bits are starting to fall together, so maybe they in fact don’t need one at this point.

Please people do you really think Rosco and Enis are working this case? At this point, they know exactly whose blood and how much was in the basement. If it hadn’t been relevent to the case they obviously wouldn’t have released it to the news media, that would have been meaningless.

At 1:03 in the video, Trista states the blood “of my daughter’s”. Is she just guessing or have the police told her it was? I believe the latter, that she was told it was Ayla’s blood.
If I was the mother, I would be assuming it was, even if the police wasn’t telling me. Common sense would tell me that they wouldn’t release random blood in dad’s cellar if it didn’t have anything to do with Ayla. They know if that blood has been there days, weeks or years by now. They obviously knew within hours the blood type and Ayla’s blood type. If someone months ago had cut their hand or it was deer blood they aren’t going to announceanonymous blood in the news paper leading people to believe it just might be Ayla’s, that would be ignorant. They know 90% or more its hers. Maybe not all the DNA is back, but enough to release it in the paper.

On average it takes 3-10 days to determine paternity, otherwise it takes up to 2 weeks to scan 13 dna loci & can take even longer if there is a substantial backlog.
I don’t know who is guilty but hope that when they are caught they have a speedy trial and a punishment that fits the crime! After reading this story and some of the previous ones I have come to the conclusion that there should be a law against reporting the news with lack of knowledge.

One person in that house harmed Ayla. Two other adults who were in that house know what happened and aren’t telling the police. If the secret keepers don’t come forward and tell the truth all three of them are going to be charged with murder. Anyone who would keep this secret is unfit to raise a child. They’re running out of time. Just ask that guy who witnessed the girl in Bangor killed by someone else. He’s in prison too, even though he didn’t commit the murder. Keeping secrets like this WILL land their butts in prison.
Usually when you have evidence that proves a crime has been committed and evidence showing who committed it, you don’t waste precious time waiting for that person to “come clean”. I hope that if that is not Ayla’s blood that it will take more than just suspicion to determine who did it. I am on the side of 100% evidence and your suspicion whether aimed at the mother or the father is only that – suspicion. I thank God that police officers are working this case & not armchair investigators like yourself because then anyone who looks guilty would probably get the chair. Also, police use information to get information; what seems straight up can be a lie & vice versa. For now I myself will suspend my suspicions and pray this beautiful child AYLA is found because at the moment that is what is more important than slinging accusations back and forth. She knew where her child was too when she went into rehab. Justin took the opportunity to take Alya from her grandmother where Trista had left her to be cared for. She left her child where she knew she was safe. Justin came and staked his parental rights once Trista was in rehab., Justin is the one that can’t seem to recall what occurred with his daughter — just that she’s gone. I too know where my children are — but, I don’t think that just because someone has an addiction (that they recognize and seek help for) makes them a bad person or parent. I haven’t heard of one incident involving the mother and lack of care of Ayla in any reported stories thus far, if you know of her being a bad uncaring parent give proof if not lay off her just because you feel superior in your good parenting.
Just being….thank you!! I myself am a mother of two boy’s 19 and 14 as well as a Step Mother to 4 other children, I know where each and every one of them are at all times. I check on my children EVERY nite and there just where they are suppose to be…in bed sleeping! How could you NOT check on a 20 month old little girl?? In and article in the Maine Sunday Telegram titled “Last to See Ayla Hiding Something” Police say that the possibility that someone slipped into the house and took Ayla “doesn’t pass the straight – face test.”

OK Guys I have got to let off some steam here… I do not know any of the cops that are handling this case, let me make that real clear.. I am not a cop either. I was an EMT for 8 years though.. Just because you are NOT getting all the information the Cops have, it does not mean they are doing a shoddy job. These Guys investigate all day long, go home and hug their kids.. They have all this weight on their shoulders 24/7 to make sure they take the right steps in bring Ayla’s case to an end. Am sure they have lost many nights sleep about this as well, prayed for her life, and even shed a few tears over this baby. Just because they wear a badge, does not mean they don’t have a heart.. Quite the opposite really, as they trained for this job, so they could solve cases like this.. I had calls years ago, and to this day still have night mares over them. Just because a case or a call has ended, it don’t mean the brain forgets it. Everybody is talking about this CSI stuff.. A lot of leg work goes into this as well. If you go to a different newsource (sentinal or boston) they post pictures of her upset and crying. Everyone reacts differently in stressful situations and frankly flowing tears won’t find Ayla. She even states she still cannot comprehend what has happened to her daughter. I think she is holding up extremely well to all the public scrutiny and to all those who have attacked her based upon her perceived socioeconomic status. (poor single mother with alcohol issues). Some people smile out of nervousness and cannot truly show how they are feeling. Some people also appear flat or emotionless because they are in a state of shock. Have you heard of dissociation? It is when a trauma is so overwhelming that a person becomes disconnected from their feelings and can compartmentalize in order to survive. There is just something that stinks to high heaven about this troubling case. There are so many questions and I don’t think either parent has been completely honest with investigators. You just get the feeling that something is being overlooked. I don’t know what to make of it all.
What would the mother be lying about? She didn’t have the child in her custody and from reports hadn’t been allowed to speak to her in weeks prior to her disappearance. Justin kept making excuses as to why she couldn’t come to the phone — I doubt Trista would have a lot of input to the case at all. The people in the house that night need to come clean!

Blood has been found inside the home where a missing 20-month-old toddler from Maine was last seen, NewsCenter 5’s Michele McPhee reported Saturday.
Ayla Reynolds vanished Dec. 17. She was reported missing by her father, Justin DiPietro, who told police he believed his daughter was snatched from her bedroom in his Waterville, Maine home.
Days later, law enforcement authorities said in a news release that the case had evolved from the search for a missing child to a “criminal investigation.”
Now, Team 5 Investigates has learned why.
Multiple law enforcement sources have told McPhee that blood was found inside the home.
Maine State Police have now confirmed blood was found in the basement of the home at 29 Violette Ave.
State police spokesman Steve McCausland says the blood was found in the basement early in the investigation into Ayla Reynolds’ disappearance from her father’s home in Waterville.
McCausland says the blood is troubling and police believe DiPietro and two other adults at DiPietro’s home that morning “have not given us the full story.”
Authorities said the crime lab is still working to determine whose blood it is, and how long it had been in the basement.
Multiple law enforcement sources also told Team 5 Investigates that Reynolds’ father left the police station when he was shown crime scene photos of luminol-enhanced blood stains taken at the home.
DiPietro did not return several phone calls from WCVB-TV. In previous weeks he has said publicly, “I would never do anything to hurt my child.”
DiPietro has also said publicly he took and passed a lie detector test.
Maine State Police would not confirm nor deny that assertion. They would only confirm DiPietro did take a polygraph and that he, as well as police, knew the results.
Ayla’s mother, Trista Reynolds, claimed she took a polygraph exam Jan. 18, according to the Associated Press.
Reynolds said she was told by the test administrator that she couldn’t complete the exam due to an undisclosed medical condition.
No one has been charged. Police have not publicly named any suspects.
The hunt to find Reynolds has been intense.
“We remain hopeful that we will bring her back to her home,” said McCausland.
On Jan. 12, more than a dozen police divers searched an icy river near the house that DiPietro lives in, but found nothing.
They also drained Messalonskee stream so police could search it on foot and by air overhead, which was also proved fruitless, McCausland said.
Waterville Police said in a statement that investigators believe Ayla met with “foul play” and that their search for a missing child has turned into a criminal case.
Ayla had been living with the DiPietros after her mother checked herself into rehab in November.
A vigil in Ayla’s honor was being held Saturday in downtown Waterville.
A $30,000 reward has been offered for any information leading investigators to the toddler’s whereabouts.

Ayla’s family released a statement on facebook today that indicated that, although the police did not inform the press, but rather left it up to the discretion of Ayla’s family, that the blood found actually belonged to Ayla and that it was more blood than “a small wound.” Who knows whether this is reliable and can be believed, but it was interesting nonetheless. I hope it’s not true. If so, that’s just one more wrench thrown into my optimism for a safe return
Why would anyone post something like this that wasn’t true. I think she was told before the vigil yesterday and that’s why she slipped and said that Ayla’s blood was found in the house. I can’t imagine getting news like this.
Its very true that its her blood. Justin should just tell the truth soon and get it over with
