DEXTER, Maine — A thief or thieves cut locks off a gate at a CN Brown fueling station and made off with a home heating fuel truck during the early morning hours Thursday.

Dexter police are seeking the public’s help in finding the oil truck.

An older model Ford F800 fueling truck with “CN Brown” on the cab door and tank was stolen from the fueling station in Dexter between 2 and 7 a.m., said Dexter police. The 2,800-gallon tank was believed to be partially filled with home heating fuel.

CN Brown General Manager Charles “Chick” Wilkins said the company has both sets of keys for the truck and the facility was locked before the truck was stolen.

“The facility was secure. It has a gate around it with locks,” said Wilkins. “A couple of the locks were cut.”

Wilkins said the driver of the truck still has his set of keys and the other set is still in the office. He said he didn’t know how the truck was driven off without the keys. It’s company policy not to leave keys in a vehicle, he said.

“We’ll find it out somewhere, we’re hoping,” said Wilkins. “All the authorities in and around the area have been notified, as have the [refilling] terminals.”

Wilkins said the truck was not full of home heating fuel, but he declined to say how many gallons were in it.

Wilkins said the investigation is in the hands of police.

“We’ll prosecute whenever we find it — if we find who it was,” Wilkins said, adding that he hoped there will be an arrest.

In his time with CN Brown, Wilkins said he can’t remember an incident where a truck was stolen from the company.

“I’ve been here for 30-some-odd years and I’m thinking we did have one taken some time ago. I think it was a former employee who took it for a joyride [and not to steal fuel],” he said.

The commercial license plate number on the stolen truck is 623570, and the numbers B-93-5 are on the side of the truck.

Wilkins said CN Brown, based in South Paris, has “somewhere in the neighborhood of 100” fuel trucks covering Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont.

Dexter police said they had no new information as of 3:30 p.m. Thursday.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Dexter Police Department at 924-7622.

  1. sign of the times here. it  seems fuel tanks. trucks. equipment nothing is safe. people have to stay warm. it no excuse for theft but how can some people get by with the prices out there

    1. Yeah…somewhat agree, but you do gotta admit….we have been spared the full wrath of winter so far……maybe I should shut up….lol

  2. How does their company  feel getting ripped off?? Not a good feeling is it..CROOKS..Someone’s got a full barrel of oil..

    1. You really think it’s the local oil delivery companies that are responsible for the prices? Really?

  3. Maybe we have a modern day Robin Hood……..Wait a minute I had a memory lapse. We have one, he’s called Obama!

    1. i gave him a road to check and he already checked it. not to hard to find a truck like that unless some one has a big garage to put it in.  times are tough for sure, but stealing a whole truck?? well thats pretty bad.  oh yea they also sold 275 gallons off the other truck as well. guess there wasn’t enough in the one to go through the winter!

      1. and drive the prices up–well for those of us who pay for oil and don’t expect the government to give it to us.

    1. Apparently, the BDN is an advocate for hardcore censorship of political opinions in opposition to their own. They flagged every one of my comments. S c r e w them.

  4. Probably will be returned..empty.  Wonder if prices will go up to offset replacement of the truck if it is not returned.

  5. I think that it’s sad that some person has to commit a crime to heat their home. Breaking the law is breaking the law and they should be punished.   But what would ever entice a person to do such a thing?  What are they going to do with it?   They can’t sell it, nor can this person hide it,  it’s desperation, and that’s so sad.

When they catch them, and they will, charge them to the fullest extent of the law.  But you have to wonder how this person came to this conclusion. Desperate people do desperate things I guess, no excuse mind you, but it’s sad.

  6. Someone will be nice and warm for a couple of months….they’ll probably get another 6 mos to a year of free heat, and 3 squares a day shortly afterwards…I’m sorry but times aren’t THAT desperate !

  7. I believe the truck with the oil was stolen and they plan on charging people they know a huge discount for the fuel.  Then where do you think that money they earn will go??  Hmmm.

  8. I don’t condone stealing, but I have to wonder if this this thief’s motivation was an act of desperation to save loved ones from freezing to death.
