ELLSWORTH, Maine — Two Hancock County residents are facing drug charges stemming from an incident Monday during which Ellsworth police said a teenager intentionally ran in front of and slammed into several cars while hallucinating on mushrooms.

Police were called to State Street in downtown Ellsworth just after 8 a.m. Monday after receiving reports that a 16-year-old male was attempting suicide by running into moving vehicles. Several bystanders managed to subdue the juvenile — who was not identified because of his age — until police arrived.

He was taken to Maine Coast Memorial Hospital where it was determined that he was under the influence of hallucinogenic mushrooms, according to information provided by the Ellsworth Police Department.

A 15-year-old girl who was with the boy also was taken to the hospital because she had been drinking. The unnamed girl later was summoned for underage possession of alcohol and was released to her parents, police said.

The incident resulted in summonses being issued to two adults.

Sean Arey, 21, of Lamoine reportedly was found with 42 grams of hallucinogenic mushrooms and as a result is facing charges of aggravated furnishing of Schedule X drugs. Arey was taken to the Hancock County Jail without incident, according to the Ellsworth Police Department.

Katelyn Hodgkins, 19, of Ellsworth was summoned for possession of a usable amount of marijuana, sale and use of drug paraphernalia and underage possession of alcohol.

          1. Mushrooms are not for everyone.
And certainly not for every situation.

The old adage :  ” Take two , they are small ” , may not apply
in the case of  these natural fungi.

          1. Thanks for the tip on the “White Death Caps”.
I think I will stay away from those.
            Organic or otherwise.

      1. Of course they are not! After all, it only caused the user to run out in front moving cars AND not mentioned in the story caused them to walk from MDI in the snow with no shoes, socks, or coats…  No, I would say the use of these mushrooms are perfectly safe for the user!  Are you kidding me?

  1. Once again another drug story here in Ellsworth…It just continues….I give a few more months and the police will be frequently visiting the legal pot clinic arresting people too…….

    1. The town of Ellsworth has a drug problem for its youth because the city has not done one damn think to keep theses kids busy……the kids have nothing to do here; idle hands….and why would you say  people would be getting arrested at the clinic; legal commerce sir your thinking is antiquated  … everybody in Ellsworth knows where  the drugs are..just look out your window; to the trailer next door

      1. or perhaps the city is doing fine and the parents haven’t done one damn thing to keep their children busy… just saying.

        1. Finally, an educated, intelligent smart person with a comment….well said Cheesecake…….I agree completely, and these type of kids usually don’t have parent(s) home too….called broken home syndrome with neglect and more important things to do…..

      2. The argument that kids get in trouble because the city/town doesn’t have anything for them to do is a very old one, and still an incorrect one.  The kids are doing drugs because their parents aren’t paying attention to who they are hanging out with and what they are doing.  Can we as parents know these things all the time?  No, but we certainly can check their social networks, their cell phone messages, even what numbers they are calling from their cell phone.  If my kid screws up it isn’t because somebody else didn’t give them something to do.  It’s because I didn’t watch them closely enough, or teach them properly, or even because they made a stupid decision that they now have to pay the consequences for.  Stop blaming others!

        1. The kids are doing drugs in Ellsworth because their loser excuses for parents are doing the same thing.

  2. I think the BDN headline titles are great.  When I first saw ‘Hallucinating teen darts …’, I was thinking something in the form of a small lawn dart that it used to deliver hallucinogens to teens.  I guess ‘Hallucinating teen runs in front of cars in Ellsworth’ wouldn’t have gotten the point across.

  3. You never know how a drug is going to react in your body. If you don’t consume it you won’t react from it!

  4. meh i ate some mushies a few times in my day. Enjoyed em, never thought about doing any crazy stuff like running in front of cars though. And as said, mushrooms are definitely not for everyone. And obviously going into it one must know that it is going to have it’s risks.

  5. Teenagers being teenagers.  Some go over the line and actually get exposed.  Shokcing that there’s even MORE kids doing this stuff and never getting ‘caught’.

They’ll turn out alright so long as they’re not going crazy with it.

  6. Maybe society is so dull and senseless that people feel drawn to experience something more profound. Sure, many do mushrooms ‘for fun’ but many also do mushrooms to look for meaning, as I used to do. I never hung out anywhere, or laughed hysterically. Rather, I’d stay by myself or go to some place in nature and experience it. Law enforcement is kind of out of control these days, thinking it can regulate people’s lives this way. Basically a boy just ran under the influence of mushrooms. But what about the SUV’s driving 60 miles an hour through town, as if that is so normal. I’m not excusing him, but man 30, 40 years ago things were absorbed by society a bit more; now it’s just a matter of what can you fine or stick ‘m with, and I can read about it in Texas. If you think that’s normal…
