BANGOR, Maine — For Pat LaMarche, spending this week living in — and broadcasting from — a Hobbit Hole outdoors is far more than a publicity stunt.

It’s about helping to meet the needs of some of Maine’s most vulnerable people, the poor, disabled and elderly and others who can’t afford to heat their homes.

The project is part of the “Help Keep ME Warm This Winter” campaign sponsored by Bangor radio stations WZON 620 AM, WKIT 100.3 FM and The Pulse 103.1 FM. LaMarche, host of The Pulse “Morning Show,” has been spending the week — including Thanksgiving and Black Friday — in a small wood house loaned by Wooden Wonders of Unity.

Her goal is to raise $70,000 to match dollar-for-dollar the up to $70,000 pledged by the Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation earlier this month. The Kings, who own the three radio stations, made the pledge after learning about deep cuts to the federal Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, better known as LIHEAP.

Mainers struggling to stay warm used to be able to count on help from the federal government. For many, however, that won’t be the case this winter.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services notified MaineHousing late last month that it should expect to receive $23 million in LIHEAP funds this winter, down from $55.6 million last year. Gov. Paul LePage said earlier this month he would ask the Legislature for funds to bridge the gap.

“We’ll match up to $70,000 of the amount raised,” King said in a telephone interview earlier this month. “This economy is terrible and Tabitha and I both worry so much about Bangor because it truly is a working-class town and we are always looking for ways to help, and right now this is a great need.”

LaMarche blames the LIHEAP program cuts to misplaced priorities on the part of the nation’s leadership.

“We can’t tax the top 1 percent but we can take heat away from the little old lady who weighs 104 pounds? Are you kidding me?” she said Thursday, her eyes alternately flashing in anger and welling up with tears.

As of midafternoon, the total raised stood at slightly more than $12,500. Though disappointed, LaMarche said she understands.

“I think the community has struggled to help,” she said during an interview inside the Hobbit Hole on Thanksgiving Day. “The community has stretched itself to get turkeys when [local charities and broadcasters] were doing their thing. They stretched themselves again to come up with canned goods [for various food drives]. Now they’re giving money for oil.”

Still, she said scores of people dropped by during the week to give what they could, including a children with change they had collected. The largest donation was a check for $1,000.

“It’s $30 million in cuts,” she said of the anticipated LIHEAP loss. “Even if we had raised $70,000 [to match the $70,000 King pledged — that’s still only $140,000,” which she said would cover the cost of about 38,000 gallon of oil at the current price of $3.65 a gallon.

Though lacking in many of the comforts of home, the Hobbit Hole LaMarche has been living in — and broadcasting from — since early Monday morning appeared rather cozy on Thursday afternoon.

Roughly twice the size of a typical garden storage shed, the wooden structure looks more like a small camp. It has a round front door, four round windows as well as front steps, a wooden floor and a regular backdoor. The interior still smells strongly of fresh wood.

Because she is calling the Hobbit Hole home for a week, LaMarche has added some homey touches such as a recliner, an electric space heater, a small table topped with a green and white checked tablecloth that belonged to her late mother, a dogeared paperback copy of JRR Tolkein’s “The Hobbit” and a framed print reading “Hole Sweet Hole” made and dropped off by one of her fans.

Though LaMarche had planned to sleep in the recliner, she switched to a folding cot.

“It doesn’t have a lock like a La-Z-Boy so every time I rolled over it threw me out, kind of like an ejector seat,” she said with a laugh.

And while LaMarche did not get to spend Thanksgiving with her loved ones, she didn’t go without a traditional holiday meal. Kev-Lan Coffee Shop & Banquet Facilities made up several take-out boxes containing turkey and all the fixings, including pecan pie, that were dropped off around 3 p.m.

Though LaMarche is moving out of the Hobbit Hole on Friday, donations are still being accepted, she said.

Contributions can be made in cash, by check or by using a Visa or MasterCard. Call the stations at 990-2800 to donate by credit card, mail checks made out to Help Keep ME Warm to ZONE Radio, 861 Broadway, Bangor 04401, or make a donation in person at the same address.

The Bangor Daily News encourages comments about stories, but you must follow our terms of service.

In brief:

  1. Keep it civil and stay on topic
  2. No vulgarity, racial slurs, name-calling or personal attacks.
  3. People who harass others or joke about tragedies will be blocked.

The primary rule here is pretty simple: Treat others with the same respect you'd want for yourself. Here are some guidelines (see more):

Wow …all that pent up anger and she never mentions OBAMA who recklessly cut  liheap in half! If Bush were still president she and the  staff at the BDN would certainly make that a large part of the story. Too bad the leftist policies her and the Kings support have made energy prices so high people can’t afford to heat there homes. If fuel was a $1.50 to $2.00 a gallon the people would pay for themselves and not need a government handout.

Don’t forget what would have happened if some Maine Democrats had got their way and put an additional tax on heating oil. (Joe Perry)
Obama had a perfect chance to at least play at reducing oil costs but delayed the Canadian pipeline deal until after the election of 2012.

Hey Pat, you’ve hitched your wagon to the wrong group. You should have looked further into it. Occupiers camps are swamped with druggies and transients, and frankly no-one cares anymore. The rest of are trying to make a living, pay our bills and make ends meet. Sadly, you are nothing more than another ‘Johnnie on the spot’ and trying to get your name in the headlines, and for what? Ambition in local politics? You are a joke.

Not all, there are some elderly that do need help. I do see those your talking about. That is why I argue for drug and alchol testing/for all handouts! Randomly test or you don’t get your stamps… ECT…. Stop the water dumping for tabaco.  If you smoke cigarrettes you don’t need food stamps….. Watching Skowhegan Residents, we see aBUSE everywhere. That said, there are those that are in need, those that truly are disabled, and elderly, fought for our country deserve the heat. Like all good programs there are MANY who will try to abuse it, so SAD!!

  • Anonymous

I commend the civil service here. Raising money and not depending on our government is an awesome answer to fill the immediate need. There are those that are truly needy and relying on heat. I fear that we will have those that will freeze and many more that will choose boarding homes and nursing homes to get the heat they need. We know that home health care for the disabled and elderly is the least expensive option to boarding and nursing homes. However, with fuel costs esculating its sometimes the only option for the disabled or elderly. It is my understanding that States pay for home health care and fuel assistance. Federal pays for nursing home care and long term boarding care. Its called passing the buck. Not using the least expensive options.  ABUSERS of the SYSTEM should be dealt with, DRUG and ALCHOL testing, if you test positive for something you don’t have a current script for, you are refused benefits.

Kudos to WKIT, Stephen King and Pat LaMarche for doing something about the cuts, and not just complaining about it.

  • Anonymous

    Thank you Pat!

  • Anonymous

According to WLBZ last week, Liheap is being cut by 50%. In the same story they stated that 40% of recipients are elderly or disabled. As far as I can tell, that still leaves 10% for emergencies for those other than the elderly or disabled.
Many of these people that we provide heat for, get it year after year. Winter always seems to come just like clock work. Some people should have saved their earned income tax credit to keep warm, instead of blowing it.

Many people that receive assistance should not be living where  they are living.  If you cannot afford to heat your home, sell it and move to somewhere that is heated or that you can actually afford to heat.

  • Anonymous

I would say they are smoking the truth. The failure of wages to keep place with inflation is taking us down the tubes, mostly due to “free” trade and our involvement in the lopsided mess known as the WTO. Does anyone out here have any idea of the percentage of people who receive LLIHEAP that go to work everyday? They are under employed by big corporate America and do not earn enough to make it own their own. The McDonald’s in North Dakota are paying $15 an hour because they can’t get the employees they need. This kind of shoots the theory of the neocons in the foot that hamburgers would be $10 each and the burger joints would go out of business if they had to pay a living wage.

  • Anonymous

The state of Maine was given millions of dollars in stimulus money to help Mainers  weatherize their homes, where did all that money go?   President Obama did not want people dependent on LIHEAP, yet he allowed, along with Congress, programs to go through that they knew would fail.  President Obama is the most incompetent  President  this country has seen in a long time .  He really doesn’t care if people can’t afford heat this winter.  It’s more important to him  to have people suffer, break them down financially, so in the end he has some kind of sick control over them.

So, where is the story about the broadcaster, that is living outdoors? This story is about a broadcaster that is staying in a cozy, heated, lit, camp!

Liberals have always had the “Do as we say, not as we do” attitude, and maybe now we see that they now want us to understand that “it is what we say it is, not what you see it is”. Outdoors, used to mean an open sky overhead, or at least one open wall surrounding you, but not after a liberal re-defines it!

$30 million in cuts, making basic services unavailable to those citizens who need them most.  However, we can send $2_billion_ worth of technological equipment to Mars to determine if there was _ever _ life there.   What about the life here… that money would provide a lot of little old ladies with heat for the winter

After reading the comments about this story I am disappointed at the lack of humanity towards people with little or nothing and the people who try to help. However it is not suprising. I would even go as far as saying that most of the people who made the negative comments would qualify themselves as “christians.” It is a very sad state we live in when people like init4me, thoughtcops, cheesescake and the always thoughtless OSOKRecon turns a good deed into a political football. As discusting and unethical their comments are it is understandable due to their allowing Limbaught, Hannity, Beck, Carr and Tyler do their thinking for them. These are people with very shallow minds and little room for humanity. Take a look at WVOM gadfly Ric Tyler, talks a big christian game but when it comes to produce he fails. Did he show up at Rev Carlson’s services in support of the family? Has he given to his church’s or any other food pantry? Has be volunteered to serve food yesterday? In every case I would say NO! The same can be said for Limbaugh, Hannity, Beck, Carr and all the other people with negative comments about this story.
No doubt I will be attacked by them but being attacked by phoney christians is the only thing they know, again look who teaches them.
In closing ask yourself one thing, if in trouble or experiencing a difficult time could you count on any of the people below to help. I doubt it.
Orson Wells said “When things are down, the only things that look up are the noses of your friends.” OSOKRecon shows that Wells was correct.

  • Anonymous

That’s really pretty sad don’t you think? A place to live and money to heat it, are really essential especially in this climate.

I am one of those elderly folks who receives help from LIHEAP.  I’m retired and living on a fixed income.  Yes, winter does come “just like clock work” and, along with it, worry about how I’m going to heat my home.  I don’t “blow” an earned income tax credit because my income is so low that I don’t file a tax return.  I just received my award letter for LIHEAP funds and the amount is 1/4 of what it’s been in previous years.  Don’t misunderstand, I am deeply grateful for the help and I pay my bills.  My oil dealer used to make deliveries even if there was a balance still owed- he knew that I would get it paid.  However, that policy has changed and no further deliveries will be made until the total balance is paid.  I don’t blame him- he’s got bills to pay, too.  What angers me is that this President, who slashed LIHEAP funding, has done everything in his power to obstruct exploration and development of our own vast energy resources.  He’s chosen, instead, to throw millions down the rat hole of “renewable” energy, as in the case of Solyndra.  It’s needless, pointless and, at best, disingenuous for him to continue to blow smoke up our a**es about “green” energy.

People with children receive earn income credit if they fall within the income guidelines.  Not many elderly would qualify unless they’re raising their grandchildren.  Many elderly dislike asking for help…..and they don’t squander money foolishly.

It’s the younger generation who are first in line with their hands out.  They have multiply tattoos, body piercings, electronic toys, fancy cars, trucks, 4 wheelers, motorcycles……they expect all necessities in life to be paid for and spend “our” money on non essentials items.  Heaven help us because the money is drying up….they will have no clue how to survive.

Social Security, and heating oil for people in one of the coldest states in the US. That’s the story and Pat, thank you for letting the cat out of the bag. Grammatically speaking, the way that you have written this comment, jimlay, makes it appear as though you have taken Jesus’ name in vain. If I have misjudged your intention, please forgive me. I do humbly apologize. I in no way am trying to mock your grammar. I am certainly no English scholar!!! It is just that the way that I interpreted your comment’s meaning reminded me of the true reason that our nation is in the state that it is in today, which is the issue that has dominated most of today’s comments.
I, in my own insignificant “wisdom,” have absolutely nothing to offer as a solution to today’s world wide problems. BUT God, the creator of this entire UNIVERSE, has the solution! He has told us what exactly is to be done. In Second Chronicles, chapter 7, and verse 14, it is written, “ If  my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” – King James Version. You see we ALL can DO something to remedy the situation WE have gotten OURSELVES into. Blaming this person or that can somehow make us feel better; less responsible, but in reality, we are all equally to blame. We ALL have sinned and come short of the glory of God. This fact is stated in Romans chapter 3, and verse 23. I pray that I am not sounding, “preachy,” but these things that I have written here are true. God has given us the right to question and even disagree with Him, but our opinions don’t change the FACT that HIS WORD is TRUE. It only means that WE don’t choose to BELIEVE HIM. Maybe you are one who does not believe in God or His word. That can be remedied as well. I would suggest that you start reading the Gospel of John, in the New Testament, and seriously consider the teachings you will find there. If you would kindly bear with me just a minute longer… I would like to say one more thing. We ALL are accountable to do our part in caring for, and helping one another. Yes, even the poor can lend a helping hand. EACH of us CAN give SOMETHING to benefit others. Perhaps not monetarily, but what about shoveling someone’s driveway so that they don’t have to spend monies that could otherwise be more beneficially allocated. What if we were given the privilege of offering someone a ride to a needed appointment, or to the grocery store? Maybe we could save our loose change, if we happend to have extra, and could give it to our child or grandchild, or neighbor’s child for them to save up, and determine how THEY would like to use it to help the less fortunate?  It is good training for the youngsters too. At the very least, we could offer a smile and a heartfelt greeting to someone that we meet on the street. Sometimes that is exactly what, or all,, that is needed to lift another’s burdens. If we will pray for God to direct us to the person or circumstance that needs attention, He will. He never commands to do something that He hasn’t given us the ability to do.

Grammatically speaking, the way that you have written this comment, jimlay, makes it appear as though you have taken Jesus’ name in vain. If I have misjudged your intention, please forgive me. I do humbly apologize. I in no way am trying to mock your grammar either.
BUT God, the creator of this entire UNIVERSE, has every solution! I pray that I am not sounding, “preachy,” but these things that I have written are true. God has given us the right to question and even disagree with Him, but our opinions don’t change the FACT that His WORD is TRUE. It only means that WE don’t choose to believe it. Maybe you are one who does not believe in God or His word. That can be remedied as well. I would suggest that you start reading the Gospel of John, in the New Testament. Ron Paul won’t get the GOP nomination, if he runs as an independent he may have a shot at it as a lot of folks are disgusted with both parties…

he’s moving up in the polls that the media are releasing (he’s been at the top in polls the media is too afraid to release) because people are taking the time to LISTEN to his message instead of listening to naysayers like you who keep saying he won’t win.
