Lincoln-area school district hires new curriculum coordinator

By Nick Sambides Jr., BDN Staff

LINCOLN, Maine — RSU 67 has hired a new curriculum coordinator, Superintendent Denise Hamlin said.

The Regional School Unit 67 board of directors voted unanimously to hire Catherine Menard of Enfield as the new director of curriculum and academic achievement for the district, which serves Chester, Lincoln and Mattawamkeag. She will replace Donna Vigue in a position Vigue held for 13 years before retiring on Sept. 1, Hamlin said. Menard will earn $74,000 annually.

Menard held the same position at School Administrative Unit 31, the former School Administrative District 31, and also worked with SAU 41 when those districts merged. SAU 31 serves Burlington, Edinburg, Enfield, Howland, Maxfield and Passadumkeag. SAU 41 serves Milo, Brownville, Atkinson and LaGrange.

“She is a wonderful asset to our staff,” Hamlin said. “She has a great way of bridging staff and instruction to work on our instructional practices. She is a from-the-ground-up person who likes to work with instructors from the classroom on up.”

Menard will continue working with SAUs 31 and 41 on staff training activities, which some RSU 67 teachers will participate in, until the work she began is finished, probably at the end of the school year, Hamlin said.

Among Menard’s first challenges will be ensuring that the RSU 67 curriculum is aligned with a new set of learning standards for public schools that Gov. Paul LePage’s administration is introducing, Hamlin said. Her work of evaluating the school system’s curriculum will be crucial to that effort and hopefully will produce better test scores and improve teaching practices.

“Our goal involves having students better prepared from grade level to grade level and for their futures,” Hamlin said.

In that sense, Menard is continuing the work Vigue began, Hamlin said.

Menard also worked at Lee Academy for several years.
