BELFAST, Maine — Police suspect that a traffic stop Monday evening may have resulted in the city’s first documented case involving bath salts, a dangerous and often psychosis-inducing synthetic drug.

Jay Drinkwater was charged with violation of conditions of release, possession of Vicodin, a scheduled drug, and refusing to submit to arrest or detention. He is being held at Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset.

According to a report from the Belfast Police Department, officers received information that a man was driving without a license. When they found and stopped the car by Waterfall Arts on High Street, Drinkwater, who was a passenger in the car, reportedly piqued police attention with his unusual behavior.

Drinkwater, 47, who lives on Muskrat Farm Road in Stockton Springs, apparently was trying to conceal something from officers. When police asked him to step out of the car, he continued to hold his hand behind his back, behavior that made the officers nervous, according to Detective Sgt. Bryan Cunningham.

Police arrested him, according to Cunningham, and when he was taken to Waldo County Jail to be booked he allegedly tried to hide a 1-inch-square plastic bag that had white powder inside and was printed with black cat faces outside.

“He claimed he bought it for $40 from a Mexican-looking guy who couldn’t tell him what it was,” Cunningham said.

The white powder will be tested at a lab to determine what it is, but police suspect that it contains bath salts.

Drinkwater was acting somewhat erratically, Cunningham said, which is a hallmark of bath salts use.

Police also detained the other two occupants of the car. Driver Bruce Evan, 32, of Northport was arrested for violation of conditions of release and issued a summons for operating after suspension. Passenger Ashley Bonin, 28, of Searsport was arrested on a warrant for unpaid fines and fees.
