PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The University of Maine’s nationally-ranked field hockey team spotted Michigan State the game’s opening goal but battled back to post its eighth straight win, 4-1 on Saturday afternoon behind Lelia Sacré’s two goals.
Michigan State would jump out to an early 1-0 lead when Angie Lucik was able to find the back of the cage for the first time this season just 5:52 into the first half when she deflected a shot by Chelsy Coil on the left post.
Maine equalized when it earned a penalty stroke at the 31:21 mark and Sacré capitalized with her second goal of the season.
Sacre’s game-winner came just under 10 minutes into the second half. The goal would come directly off a penalty corner as Zoe Adkins made the insert to Kelly Newton and Newton made the stop for Maine as Sacré was able to score with a shot from the top of the circle.
The 8-1 Black Bears extended their lead to 3-1 on Stephanie Gardiner’s tenth goal of the season. Newton again assisted on the goal for the Black Bears as she slid a shot through the center, finding Gardiner who was able to tip the shot in on the left post.
Courtney Glynn capped the scoring by directing a Holly Stewart pass behind Cassidy.
Maine outshot the Spartans 12-7 and held the edge in penalty corners 8-3.
Maine goalkeeper Brittany Fleck made three saves while Cassidy finished with six for 2-5 Michigan State.
