Veazie man pleads guilty in case where he was shot by Portland police

The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Maine — A man who was shot by Portland police as he tried to flee in a car has pleaded guilty to three charges, settling the criminal case against him.

But Jonathan Mitchell says he still intends to sue Portland Police for excessive use of force in the April incident.

Mitchell, 30, of Veazie pleaded guilty Monday to being a habitual offender and two other charges. In exchange, prosecutors agreed to drop three other charges.

The Portland Press Herald says Mitchell is due to be sentenced Thursday.

Police shot Mitchell April 10 after officers responded to a report he had broken into his ex-wife’s apartment and he refused to stop.

Mitchell’s attorneys say the officers were not in the car’s path when Mitchell was wounded.
