MANCHESTER, N.H. — Former University of Maine track and field standout Steve Pelletier captured a silver medal in the javelin in the Granite State Senior Games over the weekend.

Pelletier, a former co-head coach of the Orono High School boys and girls cross country teams and head coach of the Riots boys indoor track team, finished second in the ages 60-64 division with a throw of 139 feet, 8 inches, second to 2011 national masters champion Buzz Gagne, who won with a distance of 149-1.

Pelletier’s second-place throw was also the second longest for all age divisions 50 and over.

Pelletier, who is 60 and lives in Kennebunkport, has now finished second in the Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Maine Senior Games while placing first in the Maine USA Track and Field Open/Masters Championships.

At five of six meets this season, he has exceeded the All-American standard for masters and he is now ranked 12th nationally in his age group.

Next season Pelletier hopes to organize a Maine masters throwing team to compete against its peers at meets in New England.
