BANGOR, Maine — A Bangor man who was arrested Friday night after running around and yelling at people on Center Street admitted to using “bath salts,” a newly outlawed synthetic drug, and later died at the hospital, police said Monday.

“He said he was on them and needed to get off them,” Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards said. “He was running around these people and screaming. He was delusional and paranoid.”

The body of Ralph E. Willis, 32, was taken to the state medical examiner’s office in Augusta. An autopsy was performed Monday but was inconclusive pending toxicology test results, the sergeant said. “It could be a while” before those tests are complete, he said.

Willis had “no visible signs of trauma” when arrested even though he ran into a truck while attempting to flee after getting into a scuffle with the arresting officer, Edwards said.

Police were called to Center Street at about 6:45 p.m. Friday to assist with the removal of Willis from an area near Brookings-Smith Funeral Home. Officer Brian Smith arrived and saw Willis screaming at a group of people. He “reported that Willis started to charge at him and shout with a closed fist,” which led to “a brief physical altercation between the two” on the trunk of Smith’s police cruiser, Edwards said.

Willis “managed to break off one of the radio antennas from the police car and swung it into the back windshield, causing it to break,” the sergeant said. “Willis then fled on foot from the officer and ran into a truck that was exiting Brookings-Smith Funeral Home, at which time Officer Smith was able to control him and place him on the ground.”

The fleeing Willis “just ran into the side of the truck” and didn’t appear injured, Edwards said.

Smith charged Willis with disorderly conduct, criminal mischief and refusing to submit to arrest. Officer Chad Foley took him to the Penobscot County Jail, but he did not stay there, Penobscot County Deputy Chief Troy Morton said Monday.

“He was acting paranoid and delusional when he was interacting with staff and was yelling at staffers,” he said. “They felt he should have been evaluated” at a local hospital, and called Bangor police to return to the jail.

“He was uncooperative and we required Bangor to come back and have him mentally evaluated,” Morton said. “They decided he should be taken by ambulance, not by police car.”

Willis was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center just after 8 p.m. and died there at around 9:40 p.m., Edwards said.

He said the criminal investigation division of the Bangor Police Department is investigating the case. Detective Dave Bushey is the lead investigator.

Willis has been in and out of jail this year, according to court listings printed in the Bangor Daily News.

He was convicted of possessing hypodermic apparatuses in February and was sentenced to 90 days in jail. In mid-May he was convicted of two counts of theft by unauthorized taking or transfer and sent to jail for 60 days for each count. He also was given a 24-hour concurrent sentence for disorderly conduct in May.

“Bath salts,” a synthetic drug that became illegal in Maine at the beginning of July, usually contain mephedrone or Methylenedioxypyrovalerone, also known as MDPV. Police, doctors and emergency responders have reported signs of paranoia, hallucinations, convulsions and psychotic behavior in users of the drug.

Dr. Andrew Ehrhard, an emergency room doctor at EMMC, said in June that he was seeing a bath salts overdose every week or so, noting that he was just one of many local ER doctors. He also said the man-made chemicals can cause significant liver damage and increase heart rates to dangerous levels.

“That’s really one of the dangerous side effects,” said Edwards, who stressed that the cause of Willis’ death is not yet known and may have nothing to do with bath salts.

Karen Simone, a toxicologist and director of the New England Poison Control Center in Portland, described bath salts Monday as “a very dangerous drug.”

In addition to people on bath salts doing crazy things such as jumping out windows and cutting themselves, “we’re seeing people with very high heart rates and very high blood pressures … that can lead to death,” Simone said, adding that users of the drug also are overheating. “It’s a stimulant and using drugs like that puts your body into overdrive.”

With Friday’s nearly 100-degree heat, Simone said she would not be surprised if Willis’ death is somehow related to his use of bath salts.

Okay children, get a good look at this picture. This is NOT what a healthy, sober 32 year old man looks like.

I am very sorry for the people who loved this man, it’s too bad he couldn’t get help before he went down such a terrible path.

The chances of that happening are about as remote as the State filing suits against Mexican/South American drug kingpins(there are likely hundreds of them).

They are called Police Officers and not Paramedic’s for a reason…they are the police and their job is to enforce the law not diagnose every two bit criminal who claims says he is high on something that made them commit a crime. If a health risk its blatantly obvious, the police will call an ambulance but to try to tie this death to lack of attention by the police is just plain foolish.

What? Have you ever brought a prisoner to a jail? If there was ANY indication that he was having any sort of medical issue, he would have been brought to the hospital. Before you go opening your mouth, get a few facts first.

Don’t go blaming the cops for doing their job, IF this man died from an overdose of that stuff, he did it to himself.

Lots of places in Bangor have way too many people on drugs. Tons more than in the old days.  A lot of people lying to others too about what they are actually buying and how much to do. Too many drug dealers or small time pushers trying to get a quick buck. You mix ignorance & dangerous drugs and you get death.  I saw someone running down Essex St. with no shoes and no shirt, and his shorts looked like silk underwear (it was hard to tell if he had shorts on or simply pulled his pants off). Anyway, he was acting like he was definitely on something wacky. He was screaming & yelling about something. I was walking up Garland and saw him run through the middle of the intersection crossing Essex Street. ha ha ha I have to laugh but feel sad too that some of these people are dying or losing their minds. He could have been just drunk but I’m willing to bet he was more than just drunk by the sheer level of energy that your usual drunk doesn’t have.

I agree, they should be arrested for murder. This crap seems more dangerous than anything we’ve heard of.  Even if it doesn’t kill someone it seems to make them stark raving mad. They should also be tried for endangering others, because the people they get whacked out on this are running around our streets and could hurt someone.

Even though I agree I find your post rather rude. Addiction is a horrible illness that a lot of people can’t simply “choose” at the moment to not do something.  This man needed help from friends, family, and the community that we just don’t see in our society as much anymore. Even when people do seek treatment this area is rather lacking.  Sure, he shouldn’t have done them in the first place but the choice isn’t that easy as it might be for you.

I have to disagree with this statement as I find it rather ridiculous. The manufacturer did not endorse this behavior as a labeled use of it’s product. By your methodology, you are saying that I can go home and drink a gallon of household bleach and then I can suit the manufacturer for adverse reactions? I don’t think so. This unfortunate thing happened because of stupidity. The manufacturer would hire a good lawyer to prove this(as if that needs to be done). If a user of a product is following instructions, and then becomes injured or death is caused by it then, yes by all means suit.. Unfortunately our society is too litigious to understand that we cannot suit for everything. Some things we inflict on ourselves.

I learned in Psychology class that Maine has a suicide rate that is higher than the National Average. Even though murder rates are lower, Mainers seem to be more pron to depression. Depressed individuals seem to gravitate towards self medicating / recreational drugs.  This bath salts thing is a loaded gun that too many depressed people and/or addicts are going to use.  I think this is far from over. We are entering a newer age of brand new drugs AND old drugs that have been reinvented. This isn’t your Hippie 1960s / 70s grandparents time, this is white rabbit on steroids.

These people don’t read the paper (not being really big readers to start with), they don’t know what you and I know. They’re even too stupid to know they’re stupid. It’s sad, not funny.

People who use bath salts probably don’t read newspapers but…. if any readers know anyone who uses or is likely to use bath salts you need to speak up and tell these people that bath salts are downright dangerous and definitely not worth the risk!  This is INSANE!

When people turn to abusing alcohol, illicit drugs and abusing legal medications, there IS an element of personal responsibility.  At the same time, television and movies glorifying substance abuse, the pharmaceutical industry being allowed to advertise how everyone needs to talk to their doctor about the latest, greatest newest drug sends the wrong message to people.  Compound that with teachers stating that children are all hyperactive and need to be on medications (the likes of which cause organic and/or developmental issues that have not yet been fully explored)…  Well, it’s no surprise that we have so many people in Maine abusing drugs and alcohol and dying from it.  My prayers are with this young man’s family…

How very very sad.. What MaineMoutainMama said…. Look at this picture and think before you do those things. They will kill you eventually, its just a matter of time. Its not worth it, its just not!!! Now his family has to live in heartache over his death, just because he wanted to get high, there are lots of things in life that you can get high about, I know life is really hard nowadays, but its not worth it to bring more hardship into your life, drug addicts will either lose everything in life or lose their life, its as blunt as that, this man did. Very very sad, dont really have nothing else to say except I hope he found peace on the other side.

Most people work hard, pay their taxes and try to get ahead, then you have these guys. At thirty two, it’s hard to blame anybody else for his behaviour but him. I hope all the young folks take a good look and decide against bath salts or any other drug. The sad part is , many druggies see it a home first.

It’s sad that he died, and I feel bad for those who cared about him. The reality is that no matter how much help people are given they are still going to do things like this. We can’t blame the area for lacking, there are resources out there, people just have to want to help themselves. Maybe his friends, family and the community reached out to help him, but he didn’t want the help they were offering him. How many times can we try to help people who don’t want to help themselves without getting tired or trying? Again I feel bad this man has died and hopefully people will look at it and say “Whoa, that could be me”, but realistically, I think it’s the opposite with “That won’t happen to me”

People – from the dawn of time – have found ways to destroy themselves. Those types will always be with us, and I have no problem with letting them get on with it. As you implied above, it would be ever so nice if these folks would try to meet society half way but, at some point, it becomes pretty plain that reasonable efforts are not good enough. Well, it is a free country.

Watching “Celebrity Rehab” on TV, the famous people who are strung out on drugs trying to get their act together. None of them kids, but all hooked on drugs or alcohol. It’s a sad sight to see. I’m hoping they all make it to become sober, but I wouldn’t take any bets on it. Charlie Sheen is a good example of what drugs can do to a person.

That is how I read this story. He was at the Hospital within an Hour of arrest, seems someone evaluated him and said “maybe this one needs to go to the Emergency Room” then they sent him. This seems perfectly logical… Or maybe we just have people commenting before they actualy read the story?

The bath salts sold as drugs are clearly labeled “not for human consumption.” Now, if a bag of fertilizer sold at homedepot got someone a little headchange after consumption even though it was labeled “not for human consumption,” would we attack home depot? ….and what about that DustOff keyboard cleaner? It is also labeled “not for human consuption” and it is more detrimental to our society. The point is that individuals need to be held responsible for their own actions.

This stuff is made to be ingested. These are the effects of ingesting it. What else was it made for? What is listed on the packaging? Personally I’ve never seen any packages but have been told it is sold as an herbal supplement which is meant to be ingested…on the other hand bleach clearly states on the packaging/bottle NOT FOR CONSUMPTION, and lists what can and will happen if it is misused!

  • Anonymous

fact is if they find out who sold this man illegal drugs (aka Bath Salts) they will be held responsible for his death, manslaughter or murder depending on the plea.

I can tell you exactly who is selling Bath Salts in Bangor; private pharmaceutical companies in online boutiques. There is basically no legislation preventing the manufacture of “Designer drugs” like Bath Salts, and anyone with a credit card can buy some. It was also sold in head shops around the state until it was made illegal at the state level last month. Until the Federal governments make the manufacture and sale of this drug illegal, you will continue to be able to buy it online. Believe me I am not someone who normally advocates for drug prohibition, but this is a synthetic chemical made in a laboratory with little to no regulation as to what gets put in it. And obviously what they are putting in it is cuasing severe negative hallucinations, tachycardia and liver damage. If you want to know more go here: http://erowid.org Educate yourselves. (promise its not spam)

It’s Obvioous that you did not read the story! He Obviously was arrested and removed from causing any harm to the Public (as in You and I).He was Obviously Evaluated while in custody, As a result of his evaluation…He Obviously went to the Emergency room (where he later Died)… Who you going to Sue? The Doctor? The Doctor did not get High on Bath Salts! (a legal product 4 short weeks ago, you can snort powder draino also!) So his family should Sue him for dying!

Bath Salts were NOT made as designer drugs, they were made to make baths relaxing. Now if you get a bunch of stupid people that decide to use it inappropriately it causes a problem. That’s why they are being outlawed state by state.

Bath salts are not the bath salts you are thinking about.  These are not intended for a bath, nor were they created to bathe in them.  From 6/27/11 BDN article “The fake bath salts usually contain mephedrone or Methylenedioxypyrovalerone, also known as MDPV, man-made chemicals that block neurotransmitters in the brain and can stop it from making dopamine, which controls the brain’s reward and pleasure centers. It can also cause liver failure, Ehrhard said.
“It’s new here. It’s only been here a couple months,” Ehrhard said. But even so, he is seeing a monkey dust overdose every week or two. “And that’s just me, not every ER doctor” in Bangor.”

Has there ever been a drug that made people so crazy?  This sounds like a scary buzz to me; worse than any other drug.  We might as well repeal prohibition and make them all legal again so people can choose a safer alternative.   Why would people do this bath salts stuff unless they couldn’t find anything else due to our prohibition laws?

There are hundreds of manufactors, most of htem are in china. regulating them is impossible as they are shipped in under the guise of legal chemicals in nondescript packaging. People in the bangor drug scene are taking matters into there own hands, ive heard rumors of people contracting enforcers to come in and seriusly hurt street leval dealers of MDPV,while i am all for peoples freedom to take whatever substance they want i am not for the uneducated consumption of these drugs,a dose of MDPV is around 5-15mg most users dont know this and are consuming 100′s if not thousands of mgs a day. this is where hte danger starts. Also there is a crew of out of state hispanic gangsters trying to pass MDPV off as everything from angle dust to methamphetamine, this is not ok what so ever. The BDN can fear monger all they want and get citicens in an uproar but nothing can be done at the state or federal level when the companys selling these chems are outside of the USA and are not subject to our laws.

Each time a substance is outlawed chemists find a new alternative, they are running out of legal alternatives and have delved into unsafe dangerus chemicals to make money.  Now chemists are forced to market chemiclas that are not only nerotoxic but have  ahigh incidence of psychosis invovled in them. stop outlawing chemicals and people will gladely take the safer alternative any day. This is all our lawmakers fault.

Questioning…Why, after reading these now daily news stories of people who are in paranoid, terrified states of mind, would anyone want to subject themselves to that.  It doesn’t sound like salts are a “feel good” drug.  Could it be because they are cheaper than other sorts of drugs? Anyone have any idea what a ‘hit’ of bath salts costs? Just trying to understand this phenomenon.

I think it is safe to say that most of these people don’t give a hoot about politics. They are in their own little drug induced world. These sick and drugged people seldom have any brain power left to care about politics, have any knowledge of current issues or have any political preference because their entire world revolves around the drug.

Drug addiction knows no bounds. There are just as many drug addicts out there who were raised by Republican parents as by Democratic parents.

Bath salts is but a symptom of the sick society that our politicians from BOTH sides of the isles, our corrupt legal and corporate leaders, our powerful food and pharmaceutical industry have created.

This was marketed in a very subtle way, and MANY people were deceived, I know lots of people who are good, working class type that are going through very hard times because of this stuff. Across the board, people turned their heads and let this go on, with PRIOR knowledge of exactly what it is.

Across the board, people turned their heads and let this go on, with PRIOR knowledge of exactly what it is.

From a legitiment pharmicutical lab you can get a kilo(1000grams) for 1250-1500$ this resells on the street for 200-500 a gram. These drug users wouldnt be using such things if safer drugs were legal.

I agree with you somewhat, but these chemists are evil, vile people. They need to stick to cooking meth and keep the risk of being caught instead of taking the easy road and ruining thousands of lives for simple profit through the distribution of ‘legal powdered death’.

It would be impossible for the state of maine to prosecute the manufactures as they are outside of our jurisdiction, even if this was banned at the federal level it would still be nearly impossible for thefeds to try and take down a forign company. most places distributing these substances are legitimate pharmaceutical company’s and as such would be very well defended by there country and there lawyers. That is known around the world for what it is. This was marketed
corporately as a Bath Salt,  but the people who wanted it made, and the
people who helped make it, and legalize it, knew exactly what it was
going to be used for, with prior knowledge of it’s vileness. The people
on the bottom, your tweakers who spent time figuring this
out due to their addiction spread the word that it is just like XTC and
other drugs, thus duping the public. Think of it this way, “Oh it’s
like XTC, but it’s legal? So then it can’t be that bad for you, right?
Most assuredly not as bad for you as the illegal alternative?” Plus, I’m
not sure if anybody is familiar with the labeling they decided to use
when marketing these salts, but they used names like “Lovey Dovey/Cloud
9/Speed/Booger Sugar”. This was only able to happen due to corruption
throughout the board, and I am going to defend the people that have done
this drug, as someone who has not done it could never understand how
evil and addicting it is. This stuff puts crack to shame.

  • Joshua Merrifield

They were not Bath Salts, they were slapped into that category as others looked away. Bath Salts being sold at my local store were labeled “Booger Sugar”. Explain that.

Seems like the only one trying to crack a joke under wraps is you, my friend. Take the sarcasm and assumptions elsewhere. Who do you blame for that? Poor people who never had a chance, right? Don’t be judgemental and spiteful, please. Your sarcasm is not taken lightly.

I have subjective experience in many chemicals, including mephedrone. I DO NOT CONDONE THE USE OF DRUGS. However, the people peddling these legal highs are doing so in accordance with the current legislation. The designer bath salt drugs are indeed masked as “bath salts” or “plant feed.” Surely, the people using the soon to be illicit substances know this…as well as the risks. People who assume that “It’s like XTC… and it’s legal so it can’t be bad for you” should probably rack up a huge line of designer bath salt drugs and kill themselves anyway.

Some people’s live’s aren’t all smiles and benjamins, if you catch my drift, and this man was probably just looking for a legal reprieve after a day’s work, and ended up being addicted to the most vile substance created by man as of yet. Cops are not doctors. They see unruly people on a daily basis. It may take awhile to determine someone is on a bad drug overdose. Could the person be drunk, pot, 30 other reasons? In this case when it was determined this was serious they did transport him to a hospital.
So, does this mean every person arrested should be immediately be taken to a hospital? No, it does not.

Because they have so little? Do you think that time itself will remove people from a destructive state of mind? I agree with the last half of your post. As for judging those who are haunted by addiction, this is the type of thing that you would just not understand until you have been there yourself. Some addictions are genetic, and paired with the horrid upbringing many receive in this day and age, lots of people basically had no choice. You can deny this as you will, the truth remains.

Designer bath salt drugs should not be sold in stores. However, I do blame the teenagers for buying a somewhat addictive quazi-legal drug… and I blame their parents. REALITY CHECK, sometimes that one bad decision is an overdose from a bath salt……or crashed car with fatlities.

I see you got lots of exercise, jumping to conclusions. He would be a fine poster child…not to ridicule, but to use as a harsh example…(thus, ‘his death would not have been in vain’.)
You are way off base, and apparently, not so all knowing as you think, if you think anyone was sneering or ridiculing  this man. You couldn’t be further from the truth.
His loss of life was very unfortunate. But if someone could be saved by his tragedy, it would be an absolute blessing.
Disgusting sir, is your assumption that you have pegged someone accurately, when you’re so far off from the reality, it isn’t even funny. Talk about “saying with assumption.”

I am no girly girl but obviously this “drug” is marketed as a drug for getting high — sold in little bags like herion for $30 or so.  I can buy a huge amount of actual bath salts for $30.  The manufacturer and those selling this product should really be ashamed of skirting the system as they have.

The active ingredients within these bath salt have not been studdied enough in a controlled environment. As a result, no significant uses for mephedrone, MDPV and others have been found.

So sad to see so many people attacking the victim, & leaving the drug companies developing these designer drugs in peace.  Not all drugs are the same- not all people have the same education/socioeconomic background.  People should know “drugs are bad for you”, you say?  Heck, doctors prescribe Oxycontin everyday, & many innocent people follow doctors orders & wake up one day to find themselves addicted.  Should they have known “drugs are bad for them”?  While the makers of the Oxycontin are counting their money while kickin’ it in the Carribean, we love to jump all over the addict when they get so low they start robbing Rite Aids.  Unfortunately, we don’t think deeply enough to know compassion anymore.  We’d much rather pounce on the loser, one of the few people who are clearly more pathetic than we are -one of the few ways we still know how to feel good about ourselves…

No matter how you take the other comments, I think we can all agree that this is a tragic event for any human being to go through.  He went outside his lane at some point in life and this is how he left it behind.  It’s not good…..it’s not bad.  He lived a life.  Say what you will but this happened to be how he chose to live it.  Would be fortunate for someone headed down the same path to read his tale and see the big red flags go up.  Probably won’t happen but would be a good thing if someone learned from this.

its easy to take the  ..let people take the consequence of their action …point of view, but ,there is also the state of society. I myself am a backwoods hippy from away and no stranger to substance abuse , but I,m also from a working class background .I am aware that many people in the state of Maine are addicted to synthetic opiates, mostly promoted
by the doctors and pharmaceutical companies.  I know of families that have been on methadone for decades and raised their families stoned on the stuff. Yes lets be responsible for our own actions ,but we dont live in a vacuum, this a wide spread problem.
Its not just a few people that are going to kill themselves off improving society in the process. I have tried to raise my own boys with a sense of hard work and responsibility ,but there is such a culture “out there”.. of  drug dependence and state dependence , I find myself in a loosing battle.

It is the same as the new “fake weed” that is being sold right out of convenience stores.  I have seen the effects first hand and I will say that whoever is inventing this stuff knows EXACTLY what it is being used for.  Everyone is responsible for their own actions, yes, but the people who are doing these things are either kids who don’t know better, or already hardened addicts who don’t care.  Putting a label on a pack of incense “not for human consumption” and calling the product “King Krypto” is not a very clear message.  The law enforcement is being duked by chemists.  It is just another clear sign of the destruction of the great American society.  Our morality as an entire country is being thrown out the window more and more each and every day.  People are taking advantage of the great freedoms we have here and exploiting them for evil purposes.  We will end up A). Loosing those freedoms all together, or B). be destroyed from the inside out as a Nation.  Its not just bath salt guys.  Add all these little things going in our society today together and its equals a SERIOUS downturn in human decency.

I hope that what I wrote didn’t seem judgmental. I was in no way judging these people, but merely describing what addiction can be like.

I referred to them as sick because alcoholism and drug addiction is a disease which causes the person to become sick of the mind, body and spirit.

Look who’s making assumptions.  How do you know he was poor?  It’s not just “poor people” who do drugs is it?  You’re attacking posters here because you are assuming that people are bashing “poor people” it seems.   The general public are sick of these people, poor or not, who choose to start putting this crap into their bodies in the first place.  It’s ultimately THEIR fault.  You can sit there and make excuses for them all day long.  There are lots of “poor people” out there who work hard and don’t choose to wreck their lives with drugs.  These idiots who choose to ingest this stuff are wreaking havoc on society,  causing self induced emergency situations and tying up emergency staff so that people who are TRULY in need of medical help have to wait for these idiots to clear out of the emergency room.

No, I don’t understand people who shove drugs down their throats….I don’t get it at all.  I don’t get anyone who intentionally hurt themselves and take the chance on actually dying just to get a high.  I am scared to death of any of it and seriously cannot wrap my brain around it at all.   I don’t feel sorry for any of those who do drugs, not in any way.  DON”T START TAKING THEM IN THE FIRST PLACE.  Anyone with a half functioning brain KNOWS they are extremely dangerous.

After reading many of these postings I felt compelled to inform you that drug addiction can happen to anyone, even those who read the paper. Even those who do well in school, excel at their career and contribute to society in many ways that would be considered positive. I myself have struggled with it and I can tell you it is a sad and lonely place to be. I was a functioning addict and no one knew my secret and I can pretty much guarantee you wouldn’t have either. I had a job, I went to school, I paid my taxes along with living my secret life as an addict. My parents did everything right and I graduated in the top 20% of my high school class. I have also had experience with what killed this man.
Instead of condemning this man and the police department and  the drug companies and manufacturers etc etc etc why don’t we work on educating not just our children (which is not to say I feel that drug prevention programs are completely useless. Some approaches can be and are effective but others simply incite curiosity and introduce children to new ways to “get high.”) but the community about drug use and addiction. There is such a stigma around it that it took me years to build the courage to ask for help despite my desperate desire to do so. We must learn as a society that this is a problem that is not going to go away and that you yourself most likely know someone that was or is struggling with drug addiction this very moment.  I am quite aware due to my life experience that there are people who don’t care about getting help and will continue to do bad things to support their addiction, but guess what, there are many bad people who do bad things that have nothing to do with drugs. We need to embrace those who want help and not dismiss every addict as a useless member of society.

    Davida,
Your right, Regardless of their wanting to arrest him they know that they should have sent him to the hospital instead of questioning him. He most certainly was not of a clear or normal mind.

That is right more alcoholics and drug addicts. There is less sun here and this is a cold state not just the weather.

It is documented and Alaska is worse with less light and sun.

The BDN states in this article that he was running around telling people that he was taking bath salts and that he needed help.
