HERMON, Maine — A local man is in trouble again for allegedly mooning motorists on U.S. Route 2 near the Carmel town line.
Penobscot County sheriff’s deputies Joseph Hallett and Larry Estes responded late Wednesday afternoon to reports of a man standing in his yard exposing his buttocks to passers-by, said sheriff’s department Sgt. Michael Burgess.
When the deputies arrived, Stephen Thibodeau, 52, went into his home and refused to answer the door. The door was left slightly ajar and the deputies saw a 12-pack of beer inside Thibodeau’s home, Burgess said. The deputies didn’t enter the home.
Later that evening, another caller complained that Thibodeau was drinking outside his residence and had an unattended fire going on the lawn. Deputies arrived, found Thibodeau outside with alcohol, and arrested him on charges that he violated conditions of his bail.
“We’ve had problems with Stephen with this kind of behavior in the past,” Burgess said.
On June 20, Thibodeau was arrested after a driver reported that she and her two daughters, ages 7 and 12, saw the man masturbating outside his home. Just 13 days earlier, deputies had issued Thibodeau a warning for mooning drivers.
After the incident on June 20, Thibodeau was charged with indecent conduct and released on bail later the same evening.
“Part of his bail conditions were to be fully clothed outside his residence and not have any alcohol,” Burgess said.
Burgess said Thibodeau couldn’t be charged with indecent exposure because neither the drivers nor deputies saw his genitals.
“Other charges may be pending,” including disorderly conduct, Burgess said.
