ORONO – Max Hammer died June 14, 2011, after a prolonged illness. He was born June 16, 1930, in New York City, the son of Louis and Esther Hammer.

Max graduated from Stuyvesant High School in 1948. He later earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from City College New York, a master’s degree from The University of Iowa, and a doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of North Dakota. Max also served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Western Europe, primarily Germany, during the Korean War period, 1950-1952. Max resided in Orono from 1961 to 2011. He was a retired professor of clinical psychology at the University of Maine, Orono, and a psychotherapist licensed in the state of Maine. Max had a life-long interest in sports. He won medals in pingpong and in track and was an avid runner. Max had very deeply held spiritual values and insights. He was known and loved as a warm hearted, sincere, compassionate, deeply caring person.

Max was predeceased by his parents, Louis and Esther Hammer; and by a brother, Irving Hammer. Surviving are his five adult children, Barry Hammer, Alex Hammer, Estelle Hammer Koh, Bradley Hammer and David Hammer; three grandchildren, Alyssa Koh, Eva Hammer and Haley Hammer; as well as Clara Fallick, who he was formerly married to and who is the mother of his five children.

Funeral services were held June 15 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, and at the Jewish Funeral Chapel, 118 Center St., Bangor. Interment was at Beth Israel Cemetery, Mount Hope Avenue, Bangor. Those who wish to remember Max in a special way may make gifts in his memory to The Education Fund at Beth Israel Synagogue.
