VEAZIE, Maine — During a brief special meeting Monday night, town councilors accepted the resignation of the town’s longtime tax assessor and code enforcement officer and took initial steps toward determining how those services will be provided in the short term.
Allan Thomas, who had served in both roles for more than 21 years, tendered his resignation a week ago after members of the Town Council did not reappoint him to either position during their June 20 meeting. Both of the one-year appointments expire at the end of June.
Thomas, who is 65, has been battling cancer and other health problems. In a telephone interview last week, he said he had planned to retire in the near future but expected to continue to work at least until preparations for this year’s property tax billing is completed. In most years, that is July or August.
During a brief special meeting Monday night, town councilors voted to have Municipal Resources Group, a consulting company, come to Veazie to make a proposal for laying the groundwork for the tax billing.
Town Manager Bill Reed said that representatives from the company are available to visit Veazie later this week and plan to present a proposal to town councilors on July 6.
Reed said the company’s fee for such work is $750 a day and that a Municipal Resources official said the town could get the work done for less by hiring a local contractor or another municipality.
In related action, the council voted to seek proposals for assessing services from qualified contractors and municipalities.
Reed said some of the code and inspection work Thomas had been doing can be handled by Public Works Director Brian Stoyell in the short term.
Though Thomas attended Monday night’s meeting along with his wife, Elaine, he did not address councilors nor did they address him. Thomas said afterward that he has hired an attorney but had no specific plans regarding any potential legal action.
Also on Monday, councilors discussed an issue pertaining to the firefighters union in executive session. They took no action afterward.
